The problem could also be over-fishing , the Orca could be associating the loss of food with boats .

that isn't true, as one who lived in Alaska on the sea coast, we were all aware of this and Orca are NOT gentle creatures, one needs to be aware of their territory. it is NOT a change. we kayak and we have to get along with them or they attack. they have been know to collapse house boats and floating homes depending on who lives there and what they have done. kinda like God actually...tf

Terrifying animal. They’re intelligent, emotionally driven, can work effectively as a team of usually 15 individuals, has built in sonars and are very athletic in their element. They can weigh 10 tons and still jump 15 feet out of the water. Even sharks and whales are afraid of them. With that weight, speed and strength if they decide to gang up on a ship it won’t take much to destroy one.

If they wanted to, they could swim as a team to create a wave to flip the boat and spill the people, like other orcas have learned to use their wake to wash seals off of the safety of floating ice. Were quite lucky they don't think we are delicious.

Being a sailor , I believe that the movement of the rudder is producing a sound that is very disturbing to the Orcas. I hope this message is seen by marine biologists and check out this possibility. And every day we kill them and eat them. And every day we go into their territories whether it’s the ocean or forest. More animals need to rebel against us. Humans need to know they are not the only beings on this earth and that we are not the superior beings at the top even though we act like it. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with the sword, and with hunger, and with death and with the beasts of the earth." -Revelation 6:8 Death by beasts of the earth is beginning to happen now where wild animal are losing their fear of humanity are turned against us. This is happening with wildlife all over the earth and will begin happening with domesticated ones as well. The war that is brewing between the US and Russia will be the sword, the escalating global famine will be hunger, and many other things will take place that will kill many. All these things, including the uptick of unprovoked animal attacks is happening because God is purging His earth of humanity. Those who accept the work of His son on the cross to save them from their sins will be saved. The rest will perish. Repent = a change of mind. Repent! Accept the love that your Creator has shown you. Give your life to Jesus the Christ. Please do this now. A few precious moments remain You are a father and mother because God was first a Father. If we bare His image and likeness, it logically follows that He first possessed the ability to have children and this was passed on to humanity. We are His children. More warnings: This is why Beyonce took pictures on those different color horses, including a pale horse. These are all warnings of horsemen of the apacalypse. All have been warned. In the 1977 film Orca, the whale causes a bunch of damage in the cove where the fisherman that killed his mate lives. The whale taunts him and the villagers until he is forced to leave and face the whale's wrath at sea. Orcas are monogamous. They mate for life. They have long memories and their brains are much larger than ours. Their intelligence may easily surpass our own. They can communicate millions of pieces of information through sound in seconds to one another over hundreds of miles. They are very protective and territorial and will stay in an area where trauma has been caused for long periods of time until it's reconciled. Many coastal tribes have legends about the orca and how it has a vengeful warrior spirit. They are an apex predator being one of the, if not the most powerful animals on Earth. Not to mention, they have the patience of a saint. They may stalk their prey for days to weeks. As the old saying goes, it's not wise to fool with mother nature; and this particular earthling will fight to the death to protect it's family and it's pod.

In the mid 1980's I experienced the opposite of this when I used to go out in my 22' cuddy cabin boat nearly every day all through the summer over a few years. Early the first year, I met a mother beluga whale with I believe her daughter beluga whale. When the mother came right up next to my boat in such a friendly way we could pat her on the head and she would gently rise up as high as my boat and was looking at everything in the boat and also in my cabin. Only two days later while out in this area, in the ocean just off of Jones Beach on long Island New York, just the daughter beluga whale came gently up to my boat this time. Doing mostly the same thing. Rising up inches to the side of my boat and again looking around and especially into my cuddy cabin. But this time I was alone and apparently so was she. I never again ever saw her mother again. Then only a few minutes later she gently sunk down under water and almost immediately came up on the other side of the boat inches away and gently rose up again. Enough to mostly look in the cabin again from this angle to see that I was truly alone this time. Then she huge out for quite a while sinking down and coming up with a huge jelly first that mostly filled her mouth. Then she gently closed her mouth eating it. And she circled my boat a number of times while swimming around, rolling and stuff. It truly felt like she was enjoying my company and me watching her, giving her my attention. This went on for quite a while. Maybe a half hour or even an hour. It was very cool and I enjoyed it. Then the next day when was in the ocean and around 3 or more miles farther put and about 3 miles farther east down the beach. Farther from the Freeport inlet. There she was again, as I noticed her heading my way, as I was just floating around out there as I liked to do. And again, she started by coming right up to the boat, rising up and looking around and into the cabin. Then right away, moving over to the other side to again get in the best position to see into the cabin and confirm I was alone as I most always was and would be, as she would would repeat this almost ever time I was out in the ocean in all different locations up and down the beach and at all different distances and sometimes quite a distance in miles from the beaches past the shipping channels and she'd come again and again to see me and hang out. Swimming around, eating jellyfish, doing different things and showing off. As I'd be sunning myself laying out on the bow of my boat and reading a book or pouring water from from my pail all over my body, cooling off and hanging out, or doing other things in my boat. She aways seemed as interested in what I was doing as I was about what she was doing. On some days she'd leave and swim back again one or more time over the hours I'd be out there. On some days she'd stay pretty close for easily an hour or more, maybe heading away and back again. I'd definitely say, we had some kind of a friendship with both of us enjoying the other's company and watching what each other were doing. This happened for around 5 or 6 months every summertime for the next three years. I definitely began to miss her and wonder about her on the forth year, because I had gotten married and moved to a more southern state. She had truly become an enjoyable part of my life. A friendship like no other. I aways thought she must recognize the unique sound my engine to find me. It was a friendship of mutual enjoyment of spending time with another happy being. No language needed. But I'm sure she could see the happiness on my face and the wonder in my eyes, as I felt I was seeing these same reactions in her. I can only hope she's still alive and happy all these years later. I do know it's possible. I'm also believer there are many wild animals in nature where we can share these simple mutual friendships, because I also believe I've had other I won't go into now. I recommend for others to simply slow down. Be patient with and around wildlife and just enjoying their presence from whatever distance. And sometimes they may find you as interesting, calm and friendly and want to observe you in their way and you just my get the chance to share each other's experiences for a time. And if they enjoy you enough. They too may desire to do it again and again. I've noticed over the years as I've enjoyed so many hours just tinkering around in and around my garden and property. That there are birds and all kinds of other animals that also live right there. It's there home too. Once they feel and trust that you won't ever want to harm or hurt them. And your just doing whatever you're doing. You may start to realize they don't fear getting closer and closer to you as they too just go about living their lives. Over time the local birds keep an eye open, watching when they see I'm digging and moving dirt and plants around. Just waiting for me to uncover or scare bugs worms from the soil, and don't hesitate to fly right close to me. Maybe within inches to pick off a tasty snack. These too, are friendship of a different kind, and also enjoyable. ENJOY

I am reading a book on Stanford machine learning experts trying to decipher whale language, and so far they believe it is more complex than most of our languages. And that the first thing they will be asked once they can communicate is for whale rights, similar to human rights. Whales in general have emotional centres 4x larger than humans proportionally. So seemingly have a lot more compassion, empathy and patience than us. However, after hundreds of years of us destroying their homes maybe they are trying a new method to communicate.

from a sailor's perspective. We do not harm anyone. This seems to be a particular pot of orcas near Portugal/ Gibraltar and the big question is how to stop it without hurting them before lives are lost. I understand they're specifically attacking the spade rudders most sailboats have, Maybe there is something about that shape that triggers the attack. And maybe that is also the solution to the problem? a changed shape, colors, or such? I don't have the answer. For us, it would be to stay out of that known area as far as possible. I wonder if there are any other reports of orcas attacking sailboats in other places. I have never heard of it anyway, hence this is a rather peculiar behavior.

There are 2 theories about this behaviour: 1. The iberian pod of orcas, as an animal that likes to play en challenge itself, has found a new "sport" and it is kind of a game for them. 2) (the most probable option): A member of that pod of orcas experienced a traumatic event with a boat, so now they see the boats as "a danger or a problem". We cannot ask them so it is not 100% sure which of those. Orcas are usually very kind and curious about humans. There are 0 Orca attacks in history, 0! So a person in the water should not be worried. But... If those orcas associate boats as a problem, would not be a good sign if they associate boats with humans. They are smart animals and if they saw humans as a problem, that could be very, very crazy, but for now it didn't happen, and encountring a group of wild Orcas is the safest thing can happen, as you can be sure that there won't be any shark around...

I would bet it’s all the sonar going on. If you’ve ever been underwater and heard sonar it is extremely loud and very annoying. With the Navy and other navies around the world doing underwater sonar tests I would imagine it’s a natural instinct for them to just make it want to stop.I live here in San Diego California and a free dive off of La Jolla near Scripps oceanography and when they do tests off the pier it is so piercing and loud I can’t imagine what it would be like for an orca. It’s their ocean not ours

Intelligent? It’s stupid to attack humans. If anything this will warrant retaliation and these whales will be culled. Don’t mess with humans. Our battleships and submarines can easily kill killer whales. It’s like bombing Russia, it’s a stupid move that will result in more damage towards everyone.

Sailers over there need to use some sort of underwater audible deterrent. Something that they can start out as an annoyance to get them to go away, but if they persist they can increase it as needed. I'd prefer the non-lethal approach, but Orca's can be very dangerous so I suspect this pod may end up getting hunted before too long.
