There have been numerous reports of Orcas attacking yachts this season and nobody really knows why.
In this video we experience 2 hours of harassment from a pod of orcas off the coast of Porto.
The film was taken on October 4th during the yacht delivery of a new Lagoon 450 from Les Sables to Gibraltar.
The music is "Russian River" by Dan Henig.

I remember as a child going out salmon fishing with fishing in a 14ft aluminum boat with my father and uncle. A pod of Orcas came around the point and came right at us. A big male came so close that my father could have reached over and touched his dorsal fin. It was at least twice as long as the boat. A couple swam right under us, and a few others breached 30m away. We stopped and they swam around, so started up again and they just swam along with us for a couple of minutes then wandered off after the salmon. It was one of the most amazing events of my young life at the time. and never felt afraid. Years later my father told me that it was one of scariest moments of his life given that we called them Killer Whales at the time.

Somewhere back in the mists of time it got switched to Killer Whales from Whale Killers. The whaling ships hated orca because orca would interfere with their hunt. AFAIK there isn't a recorded death by wild orca ever. It's the captive orca you need to worry about.

this might be the same pod of orcas doing this in Spain, near Gibraltar. They travel north across the cost of Portugal. Marine biologists believe they might had a bad encounter with a yacht, while playing- and it turned their behaviour into attacking just yachts.

actually i heard it is because of the fisherboats which are fighting with the orcas for the red tuna there, as a result they manifested this behavior. They even know how to damage specifically the rudder so it can`t move anymore and since they can`t attack the big fishing trawlers (they would hurt themselves) they go for the smaller sailing boats

Their upside down posturing is a non threatening move. Better way to respond is to stop. Disengage -they think it's a game. They will lose interest quickly. I've spent hours in the water with these creatures and they deserve our respect. Believe me they know exactly what they are doing. If their intention was to attack/damage your yacht... you wouldn't have it anymore.

The crew was worried about the rudders because they would have had to be rescued. The cost wouldn't be ruinous. Most yatchies build and rebuild their own rudders on their own. In this case this is a company that delivers boats for a living. They would have si.ply ordered a new one, and they would have insurance to be able to sail the boat as they don't own it.

I dont think they are protecting the straight they are just starving. The more I look into that particular pod and that region it seems like a possibility that due to lack of normal food sources that pod has started seeing humans as a food source. Straights of Gibraltar during especially past 2 or 3 years has had many people crossing it packed on small rafts/boats, many of who go missing. Its just a theory but it would explain that pods behaviour. There seems to be a very strong narrative that Orcas never attack humans in the wild but due to overfishing of tuna in the region the Orcas are starving and with other readily and easily accessible food sources I just see it as a possibility that no one seems to be looking at.

These attacks are all taking place off the Coast of Spain. So it is one pod, and scientists have noticed 2 of the Orcas that were attacking the boats were badly injured, most likely from propellers. Orcas are a generational learners, older ones will teach younger ones and so on. So these attacks are most likely a self defense mechanism against the encroachment of boaters into there environment after a number of injuries.

I sailed a FP Antigua 37 round the world. Back in the day ,we said Orcas, and whales generally, are highly intelligent. If you simply start an engine, or better still both, then they will know you are a boat. And they do not like to eat fibreglass. This most definitely worked for me. And one very scary encounter was back in my student days we sea kayaked from Mull of Kintyre 22 mile across to Northern Ireland . 3 kayaks 2 miles from land. And 4 orcas circled us and one surfaced right next to me and i was staring into its eye. It was as though they checked us out. Decided we were not food . And went down to the makerel feast that is in the North Channel. They are famously still there 40 years later. The local fishermen told us they never attack boats.

Afterwards they spent more than two months floating in their survival raft, living on fish and turtles, drinking water from the desalination machines they were smart to make sure were part of their survival gear. Years ago, racing on a Sigma 36 in Portland Harbour, UK we had strange banging from underneath and the rudder was hit upwards repeatedly so hard from below that it lifted on its pivots each time and the stern rode up enough to feel it - then 4 dolphins surfaced around the boat - It was unnerving how strong the impacts were - they then swam with the boat for a while, doing barrel rolls in the wake behind and by the bow. I wondered if they were taking it in turns to scratch their backs with the rudder.

For the uninformed commenting about Orca responding to the boat's "electronics", no evidence exists to support the theory that Orca can detect the electric or magnetic fields produced by electronics - regardless of their strength. There is plenty of evidence, however, that proves they are sensitive to mechanical vibrations (ie. sonar) in the water. Boat electronics do not create mechanical vibrations in the hull or water that are comparable in amplitude or frequency to those transmitted to a vessel's hull that are created by sail rigging, rotating propellers, engines, or clunking rudders. The best Orca deterrent will likely wind up being a sonar transmitter that outputs high level signals at frequencies that are annoying to Orca - kind of like a boom box that belts out high volume hip-hop in the presence of your grandparents.
@fatboyrowing
@fatboyrowing 3 года назад
cj g sounds legit and logical... I’m guessing some frequencies/modulations/amplitude would get their interest and some would annoy them and drive them away. As you stated, I wouldn’t think electronics like a VHF radio or a radar designed to transmit through air would be detectable by any undersea creature.

Survive the Savage Sea by Dougal Robertson After their 43ft schooner was stove in by a pod of killer whales, the six of the Robertson family spent 37 days adrift in the Pacific in a small dingy. There were no maps, compass, navigation instruments, or rations for only 3 days.

I am surprised that the Coast Guard did not advise you to heave to. It is believed that the Orcas are playing with the rudder, thus stopping all motion would hopefully make them loose interest in their toy (your boat). It is possible that it is a particular pod that inhabits that region and so they are likely to keep doing it. On the bright side, we now know the test results and the Lagoon has tough rudders!

Portugal has never had ORCAS( and it's a Portuguese word!), orcas only appeared this year (this summer) if they stay, they will certainly be protected, like all other animals, including wild ones.

I was thinking the same thing. A decent size pod of ADULT Orcas would've destroyed that boat if it were under any REAL attack. These clearly were not adults, and they were simply bumping the boat. And while I do understand that might be somewhat frightening out in the middle of the ocean...a REAL attack would have been far worse!!

That seemed very territorial of them, The belly up is normally a hello signal. Question, is their a lot of fishing trolly's in that area?. Something must of happened to the pod or a pod member that triggers a response when seeing boats around them.

Orcas are literally the world's largest dolphins, they love playing in wakes. You would've been better off stopping until they got bored and swam off. For what it's worth, they might've also been disappointed your boat didn't generate the kind of wake they really enjoyed. Can imagine an orca telling the others, "hang on guys! This is one of those fast things, any second it's gonna take off and then we'll have real thing waves. Any second..." A mediocre experience for everyone. Edit: Except the viewers. This was very cool.
