I'm sorry but Eiza's bad acting was really distracting while trying to watch this. It's obvious why she was cast but her acting gets worse as the show evolves.

The entire last 3 episodes were just about Will? There was nothing about the Wallfacer Program? That's the title of the last episode. Jin, Will, Wade, and Saul will be the most important characters throughout the show if they stick to the same arcs. Just like the first book, this season seems like it's just setting up the plot in order for the rest of the show to go absolutely off the walls insane. If you thought the reveals and action peaked in episodes 3-5, you have no idea how wide your mind is going to be blown open by the rest of the story. I barely even think about the first book when I think back on this series.

"I barely even think about the first book when I think back on this series." ^^ Exactly. When humanity comes into contact with the teardrop, and when the Singer tosses the dual-foil vector.....I get chills thinking about it. Nothing in the first book compares to what comes later.

I waited until after I watched the show to watch your review and was curious how you felt. I felt almost exactly the same way. I actually ended up binging episodes 1-5 one night and ran out of time, plus the way episode 5 ended was just insane, and felt like a good place to stop for the night. The next day I finished episodes 6-8 and was incredibly underwhelmed with the direction it took. 100% in agreement with your review! I see a lot of other commenters that are familiar with the full source material saying it matters later, or is more important than we think, but honestly as someone like you who had never read/watched anything else from this story, having the show completely change directions and tones like that was incredibly jarring and definitely turned me off. Though I definitely am looking forward to another season and hope it gets made.

As a book reader, all I can say is that I have every confidence in D&D redeeming themselves with this series. I base this on how they are adapting the story to fit with these main characters to make a more emotional narrative that appeals to wide audiences, and with subtle easter eggs peppered throughout. Everything they've done has its place, and for those who have the patience to stick with it, an epic ride awaits.

I can imagine what happened in episode 5 that made you wow, Cuz that sounds where the 1st book of the trilogy ends. And I kanda worry from what you say about the last three episodes. It seems that they put the beginning of book2 and book3 to the end of S1. As a book reader I'll say, Jovan and Will are possibly the most important characters in the whole trilogy. But will that arrangement make S1 anticlimactic? Thank you for the review and good job, Steve! As a fan of the trilogy, I am reaaaally jealous of you having already watched the show. Can't wait!!!!

This is so fascinating to me... And I can't imagine that they spent THREE episodes focusing on Will's love story?? There's not even that much written in the book. I can see how this is anticlimatic and based on what Steve has said, it doesn't seem like the show revealed what eventually happened to Will? Very interesting decisions here.

So basically Game of Thrones all over again when it gets better and better and peaks in the middle but then becomes flaming dumpster fire at the end. It looks like D&D made a mistake of deviating so much from the book replacing many of the main characters and settings of the book with completely different stuff.

They introduced characters from books 2 & 3 to build them up for the succeeding seasons. These characters have huge payoffs.This is SMART! This means THEY KNOW HOW TO END IT WITH A BANG! Compared with GOT, they were lost because the ending DOEST EXIST bc GRRM is money hungry and lazy,
@Intranetusa
@Intranetusa 6 месяцев назад
@@Mizt9462 D&D is deviating from the books and making their own thing...which is their major flaw when making GOT and why the final season turned out terribly (they ran out of material and made their own thing). It is claimed the show was making 3B more international, so why did they change the setting from China to the UK? The USA is far more international than the UK. Some of the character changes like splitting Wang Miao into different new people of British descent seems ok and makes sense to flesh out the character more. Other changes don't really make sense at all. For example,they removed Zhang Beihai and replaced him with a British character. Beihai is supposed to be a very "Chinese" character rooted in China's authoritarian political system and represents very Chinese socio-cultural elements and tropes. His character serves as a political commissar who purges other people for dis-loyalty, but has his own disloyal agenda...which he learned to hide via growing up and playing the political game in China's authoritarian cut throat system. In the books, is basically the opposite of Ye Wenjie - both grew up in the Chinese cultural and authoritarian system but they ended up on polar opposites of the ideological spectrum. If they changed the character to a British guy who grew up in a liberal representative democracy like the UK, then they're completely missing some of the political and cultural themes of the books.

@Intranetusa
@Intranetusa 6 месяцев назад
 @Mizt9462 They shouldn't have made this into 8 episodes. 8 episodes is barely enough to flesh out book 1, but now they're introducing stuff from book into into the mix. The show is rushed and they completely skip over the science according to several early reviews. That is not a good sign because it sounds like they are simplifying and dumbing down the show...removing stuff that makes it great. The same goes for potential issue of them making the show set in a completely different setting of taking it out of China and relocating most of the plot to the UK, and also removing most of the Chinese characters and replacing them with British European characters. Some of the character replacements are ok, but they are removing some of the much more intrinsically Chinese characters . The show is losing a lot of the uniqueness that the books had due to its unique Chinese cultural, social, and political perspectives.
@Mizt9462
@Mizt9462 6 месяцев назад
@@Intranetusa There is almost nothing to dive into the book 1. Remove the science & mathematics, all we have is a ‘cliche’ scifi mystery devoid of character depth. It is obvious that D&D are building books 2 & 3 because objectively those are the real deal. And the science? I’ve read multiple reviews that the science in the series is completely digestible, making them feel smart, contrary to other scifi flicks that made the feel ‘dumb’. Isn’t it the point? To make it more serviceable to general audience balancing the science and character arcs? I’ve read reviews on the Chinese series but, 30 episodes? Most of nonreaders gave up halfway through the series. And it was painfully slow and repetitive though 90% faithful (which is arguably a recipe for disaster).
