We're going through three classic photography mistakes that plague so many of us and how you can avoid and fix them. This is everything from controlling your depth of field, getting too close to your subject, cropping out parts of your subject right through to basing your composition around your subject and identifying it in the scene.

Excellent rundown Gareth. The mistake I have made thousands of times, and still am making too often, is shooting too wide. It happens whenever I have an ultra wide angle zoom on the camera and I get carried away in wanting to include too many things in the scene. This mistake also happens when I forget to identify a subject.

Good tips there thank you , My worst habit is not checking the frame or the edges of the frame for distractions or things that shouldn't be there ... getting home after a trip with a mate and finding his tripod leg protruding into the edge of my frame and having to clone it out in post ( at which I am a newbie so it takes time )

Enjoyed that video. One of my problems is, the camera can't see what I can. I end up, using the wrong lens, or zoom in too much. But slowly getting there.

Always “Shoot for the Edit” … leave some space in which to “find” the final image.

Going too slow on shutter speed both on film and digital is my go-to mistake when I'm not thinking enough ... I used to be able to hand hold my Leica R6.2 with a 35mm lens regularly down to 1/4 sec, but I can't now. Digital cameras are so much heavier they need faster shutter speeds when hand held. So, yes, I have too many pictures with unintentional motion blur!

Great tips. I was half expecting the big errors; forgetting batteries and memory cards, or not charging batteries.
