I give away some good secrets in this one.
This week's episode isn't just another tutorial on how to use compression that duplicates what is already out there. I wanted to give you something worth your time.
Part 1 is how producer T Bone Burnett achieves one of his signature sounds by using compression. The trick is that he has the drummer play softly, and use compression to bring out the interesting tones of the kit.
Part 2 is using the 1176 type compressor in "All-buttons Mode" where you can get the highly commercial sound where the drums are in your face.
Part 3 is using the compressor to increase the sustain of the cymbals and create a cool ducking effect that occurs when the overheads are highly compressed. I talk about what I look for in compression settings and why compression helps to help lower the volume of the cymbals in the mix. (Here's a clue: Average Volume)
Let me know what you think of the episode!

Great video! I'm not sure if you use plugins or anything like that but if you did, maybe you could make a video about your favorite freeware or paid plugins.

+allnaturalbassplayer I do use plug ins when they are needed, sure. I'll make a video like that.

Speaking is also a art formand thank you for being a artist Great info in all of your vids clearly presented and well paced Thanks Again

Ha, yeah speaking really is an artform. Sometimes I suck, and a lot of times I'm on the edge of screwing it up and nailing the explanation. I guess what I mean is that art is a lot of times on the edge.

Could you do a similar video but on a compressor on logic or protools ? I like the video though, I always have a tendency to hit the compressor to hard

Hi Rian. Great Video! My question is what is the advantage from a hardware compressor in comparison with a software compressor?
@creativesoundlab
@creativesoundlab 8 лет назад
+Pe ter I have found that hardware can be pushed harder, and still sound good.

What would you recommend for a hardware compressor to use with a focusrite clarette and Safire 40?

Hey Ryan, You seem to really take advantage of WA-1176s. So I have a couple of questions. 1176-style compressors, whether hardware or plugins, tend to have really fast attack-even at the slowest setting. Like, less than a millisecond or something. So, does it limit you in any way or you don't ever find that an issue? Do you have particular attack settings you prefer to start off with? And what do you use when you need slower attack, say, 10 ms or slower? I'm asking because I tend to use slow attack, which 1176-style compressors don't normally provide (or am I wrong?), but whatever you use your WA-1176s with in your videos sounds amazing. I hope these are not too many a question, lol.

On paper, it is super fast, but I find that I can still hear sibilance of "S' and "T" sounds getting through on vocals when slowing down the attack. It's technically fast but I've never found it limiting for what I can creatively do. To be honest, with plug ins, I'll first go for the UAD 1176 so again I think it's super adaptable.

So I was under the impression that a compressor took a signal that was on the weak side, and basically squashed the signal to make it more dense and give it more body so it would cut through and be present in the mix. But all the 'input, output, attack, release' stuff really confused me, I'm not sure how those relate to one another. Also I have no clue how to read those meters...those may as well have had pictures of fried chicken instead of numbers on there...

+kook1028 Gotcha! No problem. I'll make a tutorial on how to use the 1176 compressors. For now, check out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bc89IRbt394.html

Whats w/ the guitar amp in front of the kick?
@creativesoundlab
@creativesoundlab 6 лет назад
Having an enclosure for a speaker extends the lows. Speaker captures the lows, like a subkick but better.
