3 Day backcountry canoe camping trip in Algonquin Park, Canada - July 2020 - with our 1 year old Golden Retriever. Starting at Magnetawan Lake Access Point to Misty Lake and back via the Petawawa River. It was pouring rain all day!
We tried this canoe route before when our dog was younger, and she kept jumping out of the canoe, we never made it to Misty Lake on that trip - Will we make it this time?

Comparing this trip with current videos you made quite a progress in filming and editing but also in ability to control your dog. Very enjoyable. We had a poodle once and she was able to spend 8 hours a day swimming in a lake, never tired, never willing to stop.

Oh my goodness! That bullfrog is something else. There's something you don't anticipate throwing a wrench in your night's sleep. Nice trip!

Man that dog would make me nervous on a trip. My dog has no interest in jumping overboard and that's the way I like it. Looking forward to part two. Thanks for sharing!

She made us very nervous at first too! She's getting better, and we're getting used to her canoe antics, thanks for watching! :D

Great place to camp, too bad the weather can be rough but I guess it's all part of it. Those bull froga were a regular part of my childhood, so loud at night in the bay behind our cabin. Helped me to sleep, but visitors were kept up most of the night.

We don’t mind some rain, have to be prepared and expect it.☺️ Yes those bullfrogs were very noisy! I can see how if you are used to them they would help you sleep.

What a beautiful place! I have never had the chance to go camping that far north, but I would really like to! This video is so inspiring! What season do you recommend for camping in Algonquin, and is there any camping gear you think is "must have camping gear" for someone who may be used to camping in warmer climates? Thanks! Can't wait to see more!

So glad you enjoyed it! :) You should try a canoe trip, Ontario is full of beautiful lakes and trails! We would recommend camping during the summer months in Algonquin if you are just starting out (July, August, September). Early Spring and Late fall can get quite cold and you have to be careful when dealing with rain or potential canoe tips. Camping in the summer months also means you also don't need the same level of gear to keep you as warm and dry. If you wanted to go in cooler temps we would say the 'gear must have's' are 1) Solid rain gear (rain jacket and potentially pants) to keep you dry. 2) Warm base layers (made of merino wool ideally). 3) Always wearing a life jacket (PFD) while in the canoe or crossing water.

4) A sleep system that will keep you warm at night. Sleeping bag temperature ratings are based on survival, not comfort so always bring a pad and bag that is rated for colder temps than are forecast.

@@TwoPacksandaPup wow!!! Thanks so much for the reply!!! That's a really great point about sleeping bags being rated for survival, not comfort! Can't wait to see more from this channel!

If you have “extra bacon” you’re doing it wrong 😆 I’ve had Golden Retrievers most of my life and they were always included in the meal planning for my trips...just like I’m sure Emma is.

Hahaha so true.. 'extra bacon' there is no such thing! All of our planning revolves around Emma 😁❤️ Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! The very first time was a bit of a disaster (not filmed) at 8 months old haha but we altered our trip to be in the canoe less and it was a good first experience although stressful for us. The next year she did much better, but she just loves the water SO much that it's hard to teach her to stay in the canoe when we're traveling. She is getting a lot better though! Its very rewarding when they start to do well out there, just pack a lot of patience and don't try and go too far in case yours is a swimmer 😄 puppy life jacket helps take worry away even if they are good swimmers, we got one for following trips and feel better. Enjoy the experience, hope you film it!

Is there any differences between alpinaire and backpacker pantry? Ps : emma is awesome. fearless. great portaging partner.
@TwoPacksandaPup
@TwoPacksandaPup 2 года назад
We prefer Alpinaire.. we’ve yet to find Backpackers pantry that we really like. The three sisters stew is pretty nice, but we like it more for a hot lunch than a dinner. Personal preference I guess, because we’ve heard many good things about backpackers pantry meals that we end up not really liking.

I understand that your dog is a strong swimmer, so is mine (I have a lab). I have to say though that making a young dog swim that far while you paddle away from it really isn't safe at all. Your dog has no way of exiting the water if it does reach the point of exhaustion, and if god forbid something happened that affected its ability to swim, you would have no way to help the animal because you're so far away from it. Super unsafe and doesn't seem like a good way to make your dog feel secure in the water.

@TwoPacksandaPup 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback, we've certainly made mistakes, as we are new to doing this with a dog. The scenes you are referring to are when we were trying to guide her back to shore. We also repeatedly stopped and got her back in the boat only to have her continue to jump out, but, she now has a life jacket on whenever we are en-route! We've worked a lot on having her jump out of the canoe less, she just really enjoys swimming. Our focus is really not on helping her feel secure in the water as she swims to her hearts content every weekend, we are working on her staying in the boat more.
