Exploring the Ontario backcountry with our enthusiastic Golden Retriever named Emma. We love canoeing, backcountry camping, hiking, portaging, cooking on the fire and swimming.. lots of swimming.
For your next adventure, or anyone reading this, and when you are eating freeze-dried meals, you'll have to check out flat-out feast or West Coast kitchen. Both Canadian made, which is great, and both have fresh ingredients. It's worth looking into for sure.
Thank you for making such good videos. My wife and I raised our children canoe/ camping in BWCA and southern Ontario for 20+ years. We both enjoy the three of you so much. Please keep making such nice videos . When will we see the next one.
Brad, comments like these make our day. We love the canoe camping community so much and it warms our hearts to hear that you and your wife enjoy the videos. We just love getting out there and sharing the trips with others who have the same passion. Editing time has been scarce recently, but we promise the next one will come soon! Appreciate hearing from you.
Great video! I watch it a couple times a month when I need to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life! Two questions for you, if you don’t mind. What dates was this trip? I live in Oklahoma and I’m planning a fall trip and want to go peek foliage as you two did. What entry and route was this? After having seen the camping spot so many times in your video, I want to experience it for myself. My wife and I are heading to BWCA next month, can’t wait for the peaceful nothing all around. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos to share for us. Greatly appreciated. Safe travels and happy adventures friends!
Awe thanks Jeff! Honestly, we love sharing our trips for this reason, the videos can bring some peace and comfort when you can’t get out into nature. Tide you over until you can get out, or remind us of past experiences. This was Oct 2nd-5th but every year is different for peak colour. Weather sparks the start of fall colour changes and it shifts every year. This makes catching peak colour difficult because the best way to time it is to have flexibility, watch the weather and book last minute. Of course in Algonquin you have to book your lake and dates etc so we often leave things to the last minute and see what’s free, or just pick dates without regard for how the colours will be. Please dm me on Instagram.
Yes. I had a big male chesapeake bay retriever i trained to tow the canoe. He was like a "water sled" dog .Was helpful in adverse winds. Plus was a great pack animal. Your dog is awesome. Nice and calm.
Would have thought you might have put one of you with each of them in a canoe just to have one stronger camper with them at least to help out some. It looks like they did ok so I guess it's irrelevant at this point.
Good call out! We considered it, but with Emma shifting around so much, we felt it would be best if we both of stayed together with Emma to manage her shiftiness.
Just discovered via my sister. Love the trips, love Emma but the modern equip is fantastic. The Canoe I carried in the 60s was 70-80 lbs not counting the food pack. Have some suggestions for you if you don’t mind. Islands are ideal as the wind helps keep bugs & bears at bay, but you do need to get firewood on shore. You're strong enough to keep the paddle away from the gunnel so you won’t hurt your hands and could get more power by sliding you're lower hand down toward blade. But you guys are great if you want to ignore.
Comparing this trip with current videos you made quite a progress in filming and editing but also in ability to control your dog. Very enjoyable. We had a poodle once and she was able to spend 8 hours a day swimming in a lake, never tired, never willing to stop.
Haha thanks so much, really feeling nice that you noticed improvements 😀 We wanted a dog that loved water and boy did we get one. It is a good way to exercise, and of course welcome entertainment for us as well!
She’s lucky enough that she swims almost everyday - without a life vest.. but when we’re on a trip, we all wear one. Period. We’re on the water for 6+ hours a day, often in new places, there’s no harm in safety and setting an example for others. Luckily it doesn’t cause her any discomfort 😊♥️ she swims at camp without one of course.
Great video and good reaction time with your “dump”…things do happen soooooo fast! Was in a similar situation with my daughter when we came around a bend in a river and was swept into a sweeper…we ,too, ended up ok! Keeps us on our toes from getting too comfortable! TY!
Whoa guys, loving this! Looked like an awesome time. What an awesome test for beginners, trying to open an Agawa Saw, hahaha. Keep the adventures coming and we hope to meet you out there one day!
😅 haha it’s ok, I’m not offended. I have some ocd but it shows up differently. Naming things correctly, grammar and spelling are not strong suit. I’m not sure if porcupine will be ok with the name change though, we will have to either apologize for the inaccuracy or keep calling them that for consistency 😜
Awesome video! I did this loop myself a few years back it was nice to see one of the campsites i was at through your content. Thanks for making the doldrums of late winter much better! What app was being used for the map? I thought it was so cool.
That was great! I like to see new people getting into backcountry canoe camping. When I start out with new people I tend to start them on a more front country crown land camping spot which we can drive to so I can see what skills they have or don't have and make sure they don't over react to thinhs that fo bump in the night. Then i graduate them up to a full backcountry canoe trip from there.
How awesome to get to share your passion with them. Makes me even more pumped to take a friend from Kenya backcountry- if he ever gets his visitors visa. Great rhythm- nice trip
Glad to see you two recovered from your spill with minimal loss, these things happen SO fast.Emma got in an extra swim. The tree root could have been to prevent someone from catching their toe under a D shaped root and going done hard.
Thank you, it all happens SO fast. Thankful for the outcome. Emma was unscathed. I saw her floating down river but as soon as we called her she was able to swim ashore 😀. Good point on the tree root, could be the reason. We’re visitors though, so I would not merit this reason as reasonable, still a thumbs down from me. You’re in the forest, watch where you’re walking 👀
