3 different Q&D VCF's by Tim Escobedos - DIY Modular in a Week 7.2

In the eleventh hour I found a THIRD way to build this filter... which makes this video a bit messy. Since I just threw in a third (awesome) version of the Q&D filter... So another really easy filter to make, but I choose to complicate it by adding both designs in the mix, plus a third one found on electro-music.com, and a CV-response switch to boot. But the end result is a really nice growling filter. Enjoy!

I really like this series. You explain everything well enough that even a beginner can understand it but you don't show everything step by step so I can't just copy you without understanding it :D

Hahaha good then! The goal is to learn something and get a synth as a reward right? 😉

Kristian Blåsol Its funny you say that - I’ve been following your channel for a few months now - bought my first components in July and now after a lot of work over the last few months, tonight I’ve finally got 2 VCO’s fully working and made my first CV patch! ITS ALIVE! Bwhahhaha. It’s been a steep learning curve 👍😂🙌🙌🙌 thanks so much for the content, it’s really interesting😄

I'm glad you made a note about swapping the LED for diodes, I built one of these for a drone box a few weeks ago and I was similarly disappointed with the aggressiveness of it

So am I. That is why I had to cram that into the video aswell ;)

Just finished building and testing this module. I did the final, third version with the two transistors instead of the LED, etc. I would HIGHLY recommend all to build this one! So freaking cool! I even got the resonance to squeal pretty good. Thanks for putting this filter on here, looking forward to many hours of playtime :)

Good call on making the last one. Mine is STILL on a breadboard. :/ it’s on my todo list to modufy the first version that I actually did a board for with the third variant bits. Have fun! :)

@ hi, hello, I also tried the third one and used a double potentiometer of 100k as in the twin t notch filter. I am completely new to these electronic wanderings. but I liked the result. thanks for the videos, i have learned a lot here. Big hug.

Great to see some love for the Q&D vcf! I built it quite a few years ago... Thanks for the tip on using the 1n4148 diodes.

if you are looking for circuit diagrams for synth stuff, look on pintrest! for some reason, that's where I find pretty much all my project material. if you do use pintrest though, make sure to mind out for the terrible memes...

Cool stuff! But my prototype start works then cv above 1.45 volts for led version, and above 0.7 volts for 1n4148. This means that the forward voltage drop od diods affects the opening of the filter.

really appreciate this. Any tips how to further increase the range after doing a swap to two 1N4148 diodes?

Can you ping this circuit? The schematic is laid out just like the heart of the TR-808 kick voice. What an interesting project!
4 года назад
Ping it? You mean if I send a pulse? It has a self oscillation “mode” that would maybe make it into a drum kind of sound. You have sparked my curiosity (again) I’ll try it when I get home (if I get my qdf to work) ;)

Hi Kristian. On the version you made with the 1N4148 instead of the LEDs, can you still turn the resonance completely off? You seem to say that the resonance is always a little bit there at the end. I wan't to do a version that is relatively "clean" when active but not filtered. Should I rather try the version with the leds then? Thanks.

I do like the range of no 3, but to me no 2 sounds a bit more clean and versatile (and promising when you tweak the 1M resistor). Sounds like no 3 has a fairly pronounced resonant peak at all times? I wonder what would happen if you played around with the 2M2 resistor in the feedback path?
5 лет назад
You keep giving me new procrastination ideas! :D I need to finish my filter for next week! But I agree that nr 2 is very nice aswell, and again when we talk about aggresiveness, nr two is not as aggressive as nr three becomes from time to time. Although nr 2 does squel quite a bit when turning the 1M pot down too low. I'll add the "fiddle with the 2m2 resistor" to my todo list ;) And talking about things to try, the only thing different between nr1 and nr2 is the values of the two caps, so there might be an interesting place to fiddle around aswell... :)

Am i right to understand that if I'm using LM 358 and it is a dual op amp, then i can use second half of it to build a second VCF?
4 года назад
Yes that would be possible I guess. :)

Hello, what is the name of this unit with mini oscilloscope?

Dso 138. Bu there are better ones if you look around. Some that can even be made into a module. :)

What are you making your panels out of, acrylic?
3 года назад
I make them at a local lasercutting shop, with a material called LaserMAX, which is mostly used for making nametags and signs etc.

There is some useful information here: electro-music.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=67880 I am all about the way something sounds and performs rather than looking at graphs, but they can be interesting sometimes. I would love if you did full sweeps over white noise as well as oscillators. Easier to hear the range (at least for me). Oscillators would be better for judging resonance peaks I guess.
5 лет назад
White noise. Check. I agree but when doing this video the first filter barely changes the white noise at all!? So I thought that was a bad test sound. 😂 But nr2 and nr3 might be interesting.

What does vr on the schematic stands for? Negative power? Thanks in advance
@DaedalusYoung

Reference voltage, because this circuit does not run on a dual supply, you need to tell it that 0.5 times supply voltage is the 0-line of the waveform, if I understand it correctly.
4 года назад
That is correct. Sorry for missing answering this question. Thanks @daedalus young for picking up the stick. 👍

Do I get it right, that those run on asymetric power supply?
5 лет назад
Yes, in my case +12v and ground. But the psu is a +12/-12v supply which also has ground. And it works to just use +12v and gnd from that psu.

After several months of "Modular in a Week" viewership has plummeted. I don't think I'm alone in saying that I eagerly await the return of the earlier "Anything Arduino" type episodes that made this channel great.

I will get back to arduino aswell. This was a project I “had” to do. There are so many things I want to make, and this was one of them. There are only so many hours in a day and way too many projects to do. ;) Hope you hang in there and live through the squealing 😂

@ Same here, came for the synth! But I recon that is a bit far away from arduinos. However I hope that Kristian might fuse modular synths and arduinos togheter in a couple of builds in the future. Lots of cool things to do I guess, but I have never touched an arduino. I do have a PicKit 2 gathering dust somewhere.. But I did not get started with that either. Anyhow, I think that this series has the potential to be a goto starting point for newcomers to synth diy. Lots of people out there that might have built a 555 oscillator or something similar and are intimidated by the complex designs found elsewhere.
