Nice Sasha I like the toasting of the oatmeal. I make six small containers on Sunday of overnight oats. Oats, vanilla, chia seeds, banana, yogurt, raisins & almond milk. I eat after dinner. I love oatmeal.
I cook mine with raw honey, a pinch of salt, a pinch of nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon. 1 min in microwave. Stir. Then 1 more minute. I top with dark chocolate chips, pecans, blackberries and strawberries and a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt. My alternate topping is stirring in chopped apples for the 2nd min then add dried cranberries, walnuts and pour on some almond milk. I love your recipes!
My work uses a keurig, and i've been repurposing it, making quick oats brewing the water into a coffee cup with oats, salt, raisins, cinnamon, and pinch of brown sugar. It is a very fast alternative when a pan and hotplate arent available.
So this morning I had a little more time and decided to toast my breakfast oatmeal in a small amount of butter. The result is delicious 😋 Nuttier taste to regular oatmeal (of which I’m a huge fan too) I added a teaspoon of maple syrup and some toppings because that makes it pretty to eat 😊 Thank you Sasha, I’ll definitely use this method again 😋
👌Thanks - peanut butter is a great idea! I have oatmeal with walnuts, banana, ground flax seed and milk every morning. Bananas are sweet, so I don’t to add more sugar. Comforting and delicious.
Yesss! I recently started toasting the oats too and with butter sometimes too. Big difference! Today I added some leftover baked sweet potato ... It was good!
Here's how I make my oats: 1/2 cup sprouted oates in a bowl, add a sprinkle of chia seeds, a chopped date (you only need 1, they are super sweet) & then I add water (I don't measure & eyeball the majority of my ingredients, Apologies to those who need measurements) I microwave this for a min & 30 seconds. & let that sit in the microwave. In a pan I add butter, a handful of sprouted oates (maybe 1/4 c), date sugar or a chopped date, frozen blueberries, diced apple, shivered almonds, walnuts, & I cook that on medium low heat, stirring frequently, 2 to 3 min. It looks like a mess cuz of the frozen blueberries but that's OK. If things start to stick to the pan, add a splash of water & a bit more butter I take the bowl with oates, Chia seeds, & date out of the microwave, dump everything in the pan into the bowl. Then I add some whole milk, a spoonful of greek yogurt, a spoonful of almond butter or peanut butter, I usually drop a few more fresh or frozen blueberries on top. I'll take a bite &, if it needs more sweetness, I'll sprinkle some date sugar on top. Date sugar isn't the same as cane sugar. It's basically ground up dates and is good for you. This is how I make them. It's so hearty, sweet, crunchy, & delicious Note: everyone's taste is different so please don't come at me. ❤ Also I try to use clean ingredients.
When the oatmeal is almost finished cooking I like to stir in egg yolk or egg whites for added protein. Sometimes I stir in powdered collagen if I don’t have eggs on hand. I also like to mix in chia seeds and/flax seeds. For topping, I prefer brown sugar with cinnamon or organic strawberry jam.
1st thing in the morning I drink a shot glass of extra virgin olive oil. Followed by a cup of coffee. My daily oatmeal consists of the following. Flax powder, raspberries, blueberries, Blackberries, Cinnamon, all organic. I can get by with two meals a day following this process. While maintaining regular exercise. Dinners are pasta or long grain brown rice. Always incorporate lots of fresh veggies and spices. Lean protein is chicken, Turkey, or Fish, Nuts & whole sprouted wheat breads. Minimal sugar or salt no ultra processed foods.
Oatmeal is best in the morning for me. I add banana or berries and cinnamon. butter, skim milk, raw honey and unflavored collagen peptides for extra protein.'🙂
I appreciate this short but useful video. I hadn’t thought of toasting oats first but I’ll give it a go. Out of interest, if I use slightly salted butter do I still add a pinch of salt? Thank you Sasha. Lots of misinformation out there on nutrition and food. Your approach is so very good and makes perfect sense 😀x
Hi Virginia! Glad you find these tips useful! Toasting the oats will add that nutty flavor, but what's even more important in my opinion is better texture, no more gluey and slimy oatmeal. I appreciate all of your kind support! Enjoy your weekend!
@virginia2112 Per the oatmeal box you should add salt to your oatmeal. Personally, I would taste it. In my cooking I don't use to much salt .. I'm not you. Give it a taste . Blow on it 😂
Sure, there's nothing wrong with adding some butter to your oatmeal, actually we need some healthy fats to make the meal more balanced, if you don't prefer butter you can opt in for coconut oil or peanut butter.
Awesome video! Friendly tip for the pronunciation of the word video: touch your bottom teeth to your upper lip, to make the sound V as in victory! Thank you for all your hard work! Love your recipes!
@@HowToCookSmarter I have an accent in all the languages I speak and still speak them proudly because I am doing more than monolinguals! Keep that in mind too! Thank you for all the great and healthy knowledge you spread with us! 💞👍
You mentioned adding protein. To do that, try stirring in a raw egg once the oats are almost finished cooking. That should add 7 grams of protein, and more healthy fat and flavour as well.
I just put sugar free pancake syrup on mine and cinnamon and bananas. Sometimes pecans. Good. I just mix with water and put in refrigerator over night. No cooking. Can grab and go.
I put protein powder and blend it up in a blender and throw it in the microwave. Doing it on the stove takes too long for me...also, that is way to small of a portion and too thick for my liking. But i know different cultures make them differently.
I like them both, but on the cold days I prefer something warm and comforting, so I choose cooked oatmeal, and I would say it's even more delicious compared to overnight oats, this toasting really does its thing.
Honestly I don't mind the consistency when you make the oats on a cold start and stir them the "gummy texture" - I make one cup of oats on two cups of water like that and before plating mix in one tablespoon of brown sugar and a teaspoon and a half of cinnamon, and pour myself a cup of cold milk to drink with it. Very filling and tasty
Don't eat oatmeal for breakfast! lol True story: I ate oatmeal almost every day of my life. Then.... I noticed I was getting tired 2 hours after I woke up every day. I traced my morning routine to try and make sense of it. Could it be what I'm eating? Getting older? Finally, I just asked my phone. Why am I getting tired after eating oatmeal? Tada...Oatmeal contains both melatonin and tryptophan. Maybe it should be eaten as a snack in the evening, instead of the morning to help sleep better. I quit eating the oatmeal and no longer have that tired feeling. The change happened immediately. 🎉
Dude, why is your porridge so lumpy and dry! You DEFINITELY want to keep stirring it! Almost constantly. The only way to get smooth and creamy porridge (and personally I start in a little milk, then boiling water, then finish with more milk. But you're definitely right to use the water. Really improves the consistency over just milk)
Hugh, some people are revolted by what they call "gluey" and think they don't like oatmeal because they don't like what they also call "slimy." When I make it for those people who have a problem with the texture (my husband), I use real oats, boil water with vanilla, dash salt, butter and brown sugar. When its rolling boil, I drop in the oats, stir once, fire off, lid on and walk away for 10 minutes. This leaves the oats cooked and stir retain their shape and texture. I serve with raisins, walnuts and milk with dash cinnamon. Finally no complaints and even say "YUM!"
This oatmeal is definitely not dry, just different in texture, and I prefer mine this way. If I want it more creamy I'd add more sour cream or Greek yogurt when done cooking.
For centuries oatmeal/porridge has mean a healthy part of breakfast so why why the change to roasting and then toppings? Taste is a basic need that actually leading to junk food and some people are now jenkifying porridge too. So sad.
Because of its basic taste many people don't stick with their oatmeal for a long period of time, this is just the way to improve its flavor, nothing bad about adding some butter and spending a few more minutes at the stove.
@@TheCJUN I don't boil potatoes at all. I roast them. And no I don't put salt in pasta. I rarely use salt at all on anything. I can't taste the difference between a pinch of salt or none at all so I figure, why bother? I can find flavor by other means.
Why all of the propaganda ? ....... Some rolled oats in a bowl, add semi skimmed milk, microwave for 90 seconds, stir in golden syrup, ...... And eat ! Why all of the rituals 🤔
I know, why complicate something simple like breakfast oats, but if you try to compare this oatmeal with the one which is not salted and toasted you'd see a big difference, I was seriously surprised when I did it.
Try - no butter to toast, much less milk added, just a pinch of salt, low or no fat yogurt. Add a bit of dried fruit during cooking for sweetness and nuts or seeds.
@@fedya4445Some butter, a small amount is okay for fat. I believe Sasha uses Almond milk and low-fat yogurt. Yogurt is naturally high in protein and good for your gut. As for the syrup, I use sugar free. I think it's okay but you can change it up to your liking. 😊
So whole dairy is supposed to be good for you but butter is bad? The doublethink in morons who believe themselves nutrition experts is wild. Eat what you want in approp amounts, no diet will defy death.
