I agree with all the points made here but another one that’s personally affected me, as someone who has always loved to go to the movies, is the behaviour of general audiences these days - I can’t go to many movies without someone in the audience talking or being generally annoying in some way. It puts me off going as I know it will ruin the experience and would be better off waiting to watch it at home

Ive never understood the whole "over charging to pay the bills" strategy. I feel that ppl would be WAY more inclined to buy concessions if they were cheaper. I know i definitely would 🤷‍♂️
@jordanparks6885
@jordanparks6885 28 дней назад
Exactly. It doesn't make sense. And everybody that does buy feels ripped off. Cut the price, and find the happy medium where you make some profit and the customer feels like they got a fair deal. They will make more in the end because way more people would buy, and the ones that do buy would be much happier about it. People are buying now; they're just buying it from the Wal-Mart accross the street before they come. The theater makes zero profit when that happens.

@@missnurse78 lol right?! Why would I buy candy for $5 at the theater when the same candy is within walking distance for $1? It's lunacy. @@jordanparks6885 that's what is even weirder. There's not even a relative scarcity of snacks, so what value does a concession stand offer at a movie theater? None, when the prices are through the roof, and you can get cheap snacks next door!

Theater costs are no joke. Remember when I was a kid in the 90’s, tickets were under 5 dollars and I would go to the movies 2-3 times a week. Now it’s just too expensive, and nearly every time I go there are disruptive people that ruin the experience for me. It’s just not worth it.

The other thing that nobody talks about as to why movies are in trouble is tvs. Before 2016, nobody had a big tv screen. Now you can have a 60 inch tv that has great sound quality for $400 and it will feel like you are watching a movie at a theater in your home and it would’ve costed you hundreds of dollars less depending on how many movies you watch. I’ve seen it happen with my own parents.

I think John missed the mark on streaming. For years the studios have been trying to drive people to their streaming services to the detriment to their theater releases. Warner and Disney have both done this, putting stuff on streaming that they could have released. The pandemic pushed that farther, but the studios clearly wanted to do it.
@victory7763

Robert made a great point about the movie going experience. When you live in Hollywoodland, you have your pick of some truly great movie theaters to watch a film. The local theaters here are often abysmal. Beyond the usual annoyances (young children, people on phones, etc.), you have to deal with broken seats, smudges on the screen, poor audio, poor framing/masking (I remember watching Deadpool 2 in a 1.85 aspect ratio (it's a 2.39 movie). Why spend $15 a ticket + drink/popcorn when I can stay home and watch it on my 65" OLED with my home theater system, and in many ways have a better experience.

I think movie quality ties back to the price. If I go to a move and spend 50$ and it was a good movie that was 50$ well spent. If I disliked the movie then that was 50$ flushed down the toilet. A big factor nobody seems to talk about - where are the comedies? The movies you go see not because it's a must see movie but because you want a fun night out to catch up with friends or a date night. Half the movies I used to go see were merely for a night out with friends. Sure, comedies still exist but they tend to be niche or political or indies. Where is Dogdgeball? The Hangover? Anchorman etc? Movies like that don't seem to exist anymore (or if they do they're just on streaming). Unless you have friends who into a particular franchise you all like it's next to impossible these days to just go see a movie for a fun night out.

There's a reluctance in people, specifically those that aren't "young" anymore, to admitting that movies just aren't the biggest form of entertainment anymore. I'm not saying these things mentioned aren't contributing but we can't ignore that movies just aren't looked at like they used to be. Especially with younger people. There's tiktok, youtube, podcasts, etc. that gets their attention a lot more than movies. And it's only going to get worse as the younger generation gets older and makes up more of the market and new generations come in. We have to face it: movies are slowly becoming an old person's medium. Just like theater had been for generations

this is such a great video, not only for pointing out the facts, but for representing the passion and frustration that all of the movie fans have been feeling as of late. that being said, you guys could probably go on for hours and hours if you really wanted to dive deep into all of the factors that are killing the theaters and movies as a whole. i think the overarching point of it all comes down to our lousy house of cards we call an economy where everything is just supposed to go up and up and up with no real plan for when things start to go down. do these movie studios really think that they’re just gonna get bigger and bigger budgets and see bigger profits when people simply do not have the money to spend? it’s all just so incredibly unsustainable. maybe a movie market crash will be a good thing and people will figure out how to create on smaller budgets or something, but that’s wishful thinking. it’s just the age we live in where people don’t have the money to go out and spend on experiences and don’t want to go out because they have the internet. clearly these mega budgets aren’t translating to better products either. a lot of these movies are just lame and repetitive and nonsensical, and leave you wondering why they spent an inconceivable amount of money to make it. can they course correct? maybe. but will they?

I'm not going to pretend I understand every nuance of late-stage Hollywood, but one factor is undeniable. Hollywood is a hive of greed, where too many people (especially at the executive level) are just in it for money and personal gain. They don't give a shit about creative storytelling or the art of filmmaking. When people like that infest an industry while displacing true creatives, one way or the other its a race to the bottom, with death being the final destination. From a broad macro perspective, that's a big part of why Hollywood is now collapsing.

I used to see 200 movies a year in theaters. This year I've seen 2 (Dune and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare). The simple answer is there isn't product I'm interested in anymore. Studios just keep putting out the same crap. I don't even care to go see Marvel movies anymore. That and seeing a bunch of writers and actors cry over making more money than 90% of Americans will ever dream of has mostly killed my interest in the industry.

I do agree with those three factors. But there are two important factors that should be added: lack of expansion original movies and physical media. There are tons of original movies that aren’t being shown in theaters. Even when they do, most original movies have to compete against big movies. Physical media may be the least affected out of all the major factors. But there are people who still buy physical media from classical movies or movies that recently released. With physical media, people can watch a movie whenever and whatever they want.

Funny - I would include reviewers like John as a reason movies are dying - If you want people to believe that a dumb move like Godzilla X Kong is worth watching you are setting up people for disappointment. My 15 year old son and I watched it at home and even he thought it was one of the dumbest things he has seen since Aquaman. Make better movies - they already suck.

To top it off, the prices (much like everything else) are not negotiable to watch a movie that may or may not be up to par.

I was a the kind go guy that went to movie with my wife 3 times a month. Now we never go. I don't see the point when nowadays if there's a movie in theaters I want to see, they will put it on one of the streaming services that I already pay for in like one month or two. The films coming to streaming so fast ended any incentive I had to see it in theater. That's a very small level of patience required on my part; and money saved. I'm not about to spend money on gas, ticket, and food (and extra time) just to see a movie that technically I'm already paying to see because it will land on streaming in no time.

So I’m from the UK, so wouldn’t know about US cinemas, but when I went to see Fall Guy on a Sunday night by the way, the cinema was packed. It’s probably because the tickets are significantly cheaper here and concessions can be bought from a nearby shop and cinemas don’t bother with that.

Tkts in America are actually cheaper. Average Tkt Price is 10 Dollars which is £7. You'd be lucky to find a cinema in the UK charging that (that's early 2000's prices). For the Dolby Vision, which is a premium format like IMAX, that John showed, 21 Dollars is £16 In the UK that'd be more like £20
