One sending unit is for the pcm to adjust air/fuel mixture based off of coolant temp vs. Ambient temp. The other is just for the gauge..

Hey Rev, my church in Iowa had an 87 Ford van with dual tanks. I drove kids to Bible Bowls and saw it was using gas faster than normal. We discovered that the valve body for the tanks was letting gas from the front tank leak through a valve to the rear. It was not too bad of a job, but I replaced that body. It was on the driver's side attached to the frame. The worst part of the job was getting drenched in gas. The fuel problem with your son's truck reminded me of our problem.

Helpful Hint Rev to stop thermostat housing leaks and drips on the 5.0 (302), and the Ranger V6. Use Permatex #2 non-hardening RTV. The #2 expands and contracts with the thermostat housing and the intake manifold. Use a thin layer on the intake manifold, then use a thin layer on the t-housing. Also coat the edges of the gasket with rtv. Install housing-let it set up at least 12 hours or more. I own three vehicles with the 5.0 and 302 - no leaks anymore at the thermostat housing and intake manifold.

If it was me I would replace the water pump and the radiator if I replaced the thermostat on that 87 Ford f150 I have an 89 Ford F150 replaced both and never had a problem with overheating again in fact it never overheats and stays on the cool side all of the time. Glad to see old rev got his hands dirtier than the Ole man this time. That's a lot of work. When you are hip deep in alligators its hard to believe all you were trying to do was drain the swamp. Love the Fords had a 1988 Ranger a 1992 F150 extended cab with a 300 straight 6 best engine Ford ever made a 2003 2006 F150 and currently a 2015 F150. They are the best. Great job Rev.

One is a sending unit for gauge and the other is a water temp sensor for the fuel injection

On my 96 ranger, first off i...t engineer who put water pump bolt behind A/c compressor needs sl....ed, now that's out of way, loved changing that water pump so much the first time, that auto part store gave me a defective one, so i did twice same day, (the turbine blade on inside) was pressed to far in was rubbing on the block)

Temperature on that f150 should be around 190-210 normally. The fan clutch is usually a problem with those trucks. The timing needs to be about 10 degrees. The computer will control it from there

If you ever have to pull the upper intake on Jcs truck you will need to locate I believe it’s a t45 8” long to get the center bolt out I found out the hard way I bought 6 set off Matco wasn’t long enough need to run some cascade liquid thru the ranger cooling system it should clean it up

Hey Rev, way I look at it is this. It's all old. Playing the game of "well it could be this or it could be that" leads you to the game known as Whack A Mole. There is only one way to win at that game, and that is to whack the game itself. Could be rad, collapsing hoses, pumps, sensors, gauge etc, whack the game, refresh it all.

Super glue helps hold gaskets in place temporarily until you get your component and bolts installed. ;-)

The Ranger V6 has both a coolant temperature sensor and a coolant temperature sender for the water temp. gauge.

Remove the spout connector before adjusting timing . Its a jumper in a pigtail by the distributor. Remember to put it back after setting timing to 10 degrees before tdc .

Rev, run some voltage and resistance tests with your multimeter on the Blue F150's coolant temperature sensor. If that sensor is out of limits, voltage vs temperature it will wreck havoc with the fuel injectors -- run rich or too lean. Also test the throttle position sensor, the idle air control valve, and the MAP sensor. There is a strong possibility the fuel injector spray patterns are way off, basically partially clogged. You'll have to remove the upper intake manifold to get access to all the injectors. Just trying to help you get better gas mileage, God Bless.

FYI: Rev the older Ford V8s were known for running too hot once the timing chains were stretched beyond a certain point. God Bless 🙂

Into sending units or ones for the gauge and once for the computer. Rubber hoses use a little bit of lubricant inside the hose and it goes on a lot easier. They have a thermostatic a fan clutch replacement water pump is replaced

Replace timing chain with updated double chain ,the 87 used a single row and plastic cam sprocket

If your that deep in to it might as well do the timing chain

one is for the gauge the other is for the computer.

Yeah rev. Most EFI stuff has 2 sensors 1 for the temperature gauge and 1 for the ecu.

The bypass hose is 1 inch longer so that it will fit a 351 or a 302 after trimming off an inch. 1 part for both engines. Always enjoy your videos Rev!

Looks like that radiator hose on the top. That is smushed, you need a new one on the 87F150

Excellent Rev :) also got to some tips try for your family's favorite vechiles to help running smoothly one use 89 octane gas with 5% Ethonal in fuels or higher octane gas 90 or high with no Ethonal ! Plus get grey bottle of STP Total Treatment fuel injection and carb cleaner in fuel tank each month too ! Also on cold engines add a tablespoon on in rad fluid do every 6 months and let circulation in whole system too and 180 or 195 'F thermostat are okay to running in motor in 4 , 6 , 8 cylinder motors too and change Antifreeze every 5 years no worry on miles on vechiles plus thermostat also water pump too! Plus rad hoses, temperatures sensors too plus clamps too with lots teeth for tight up and screws! Also when do Antifreeze do 50/50 mix and distilled water too! Air filter should use Fram 2 x type if possible too or long life changes them one spring and fall season too ! Also on engine oil change once ever 5 years get bottle of brand of GUNK Engine Flush put when sitting still with engine running before change oil of pan plus oil filter too do for 5 minutes! Smell Paint Remover when engine running no worries or smoke or steam it okay and flush whole motor too! After shutting motor in 5 minutes too drain motor from pan till stopped and put plug fingers tight too do not tighten up and do engine oil filter also new then drain plug one more time !see if drain out ! Then put plug if no more comes out ! Then put engine oil up and start vechiles running motor and let run for 2 mins ! Then if smell Paint Remover in still and disappear soon also if see steam bit you it okay means motor did super job on clean and exhaust be run clean too on no smoke or fumes to! Rad cap change it every 3 years too ! Rev I tell this helps out on daily drivers too ! Also should change PCV Valve on motor every 3 years too and will help engine lots too ! Also Rev thing weird on home farm I grew up there was Home ground feed well in road fill up home made Square 80 feet well caseing to filter also to garden hose in old bear claw bathroom tub to and water so fresh and clean every seen in life ! Plus ran all year around and in summer cold to drink and in Winter Season never frozen up too! Filter changes every year too and you say holy moly man love water to drink from hear forever! My late Dad, Uncle built in for Farm animals especially beef cows 🐄 and nickname water Angel Youth !

Check the fuel pressure on that 302 at the fuel rail by the injectors I bet you your pressure regulator is bad
