The second sentence is part of the cartoon's purpose. It was basically an extension of military recruitment marketing, to the point they even had plotlines where the Joes were threatened with having their budgets cut.

Unless you read the comic. The cartoon had to be very dumbed down and G rated. The comic on the other hand often read like Tom Clancy novels. Joes often died, yes even the named ones with action figures. The guy, Larry Hama, who wrote the file cards on the back of each Gi Joe figure was the one responsible for writing the Marvel comics for Gi Joe. They're actually very mature and very good.

darthXreven that's true and from what I've read in the GI Joe animated movie they originally intended for Duke to die but after the backlash from the transformers movie where Optimus died they changed it so that Duke was in a coma instead. And from that point onward hasbro decided that they would never kill off characters in their advertainment series. If a character needed to exit to make room for another then they would go on some sort of far off mission and never be heard from because making kids cry doesn't make for good action figure sales.
