Great memories of being in Bangkok in 1974 and having my 12th birthday at the cliff hotel in Pattaya. Would never have thought back then that I would return nearly 35 years later and create many more, but very different memories in the land of smiles.

The second story when i heard Grace Hotel i was very surprised to hear this name. So, my first trip as a virgin in the kingdom was back in Feb 2022 still under the Covid rules and getting comformation from the hotel that i have paid and booked in to get my Q R code to enter Thailand. Thank god those days are gone. So the Grace Hotel looks grand when it was open way back but now it looks dated.But i cant believe hearing Grace hotels name and also not far from the Nana area i stayed at during my other trips after that. Nice one, Peter, as you said, a nostalgic story from the past. 😊😊

That's a great tip.. Keep insurance and contact information on you at all times in case of an emergency. I'm a well travelled late 40s man, and I've never considered that. Should be doing this at any age, I think.

Great stories. I loved the one from the 70s - with references to what was going on in the world, and the Oscar Wilde quote that I hadn't heard before. The last one was sad, but hopefully the last few weeks/months of his life were happy.

I too love the old stories. I like looking up the places and hotels they stayed to see if they still exist and what they look like and any old photos of them. That guy was clever too…pay and play only…seems the spells that Thai ladies have was just as strong then as it is today.

Why do electricity cables look such a “mess” in Asia (and even in Japan) why does it not look like this in Europe or Australia, maybe an Electrician reads this who can explain this to me?

Many of the cables are telecommunications cables installed over the years, probably many are redundant although the mains cables & transformers are also above the ground, I believe there are starting to reroute & bury them in the ground in some Thai city's

Money, regulations, enforcement. The US has always had all of those but is rapidly devolving. SE countries are still up and coming. They will probably surpass the US in the next 10-20 years and be asking why the US is such a dump.

Great stories, thank you! One thing that most farangs underestimate is that they travel to or live in Thailand without health insurance. This is a lack of self responsibility. Medical costs in Thailand are also constantly increasing, especially if you need imported drugs. Nobody is getting younger and with age, sicknesses, and deficiencies might happen overnight. Moreover, roads are dangerous. Thinking to save money on a bank account to pay your medical and hospital fees is a pure illusion. Your medical & hospital fees might cost several thousands USD per day. Needless to say that you cannot ask for any right or privilege to be taken care of by hospitals with empty pockets. When you plan to travel or live abroad, this a very important matter that many farangs should foresee seriously. Those who then beg for money or expect generous fundraising from the collectivity are naive dreamers. On the other hand, It is not up to the hospitals to cover and pay for a personal negligence. Quality hospitals that abound in Thailand are no charity businesses. It is a business like any other business, not free of charge.

I couldn't disagree with your comments more. Firstly, if you've got the money to be able to pay for any major operation here in Thailand and you can leave that's money in a bank and not touch it and you have somebody you trust who can access that money then you know if you have a heart attack or a stroke or similar you're going to have the funds to pay for it. Insurance companies are renowned for not paying out! I for one don't want to be paying a significant monthly policy payment to a company for years only to be told that I didn't cross the T's or dot the eyes... I also disagree with what you said about relying on Medical Care from your home country! I for one pay tax in the UK so I'm entitled to it. I also have a UK address so why shouldn't I be entitled to use a system that I paid into for my entire life and I'm still paying into today? To end I will just say that calling people delusional just because they don't agree with your way of thinking is not only rude, but judgmental.

Honestly mate you haven't got a clue... Thailand, it's not considered a Third World country. While it doesn't have the income that Western European countries of the United States do, it has made large social and economical progress over the years. Today, Thailand is known as an upper-middle income country by the banks

Thailand IS a great country if you can ignore certain nuisances on the streets. It IS a MUST to carry a laminated copy of your passport, copy of your travel insurance, your travel agent information (name, address, contact info), business cards of where you are staying, home information (relatives if any), phone numbers, E-mails. Solicitors Re: last will and Testament plus funeral information if prepared. The above is for in particular "aged" people from about 60 plus with health conditions. Just my tuppence worth as I'm 78 this year. I love to travel and see places that interest me. And, yes there is an attraction. You guess what thst attraction is.

I have to go with the majority as I've said on countless occasions I put a poll oit asking people whether they like the old format of the new format, 49% said they're not bothered either way and 48% said they like the new format so it's only two or three percent don't like the new format. Yes maybe a good idea to just not look at the screen then have it on in the background
