My biggest thing I wish I had learned when I first started playing, is that you can't get better playing learner league for 3 years. Jump feet first into a league, get some training, and have fun. Faster paced hockey is the best kind of hockey

Great point! When you first start, lower level beginner skates will only get you so far. In addition to facing better (more predictable shots) generally higher levels of hockey mean players play scenarios correctly (i.e. dmen play off man rushes correctly) and overall mean you as a goalie develop better habits. Put “bounce-dryer-sheets” inside your bag, and even in your glove. They absorb moisture, and smell, and leave your gear smelling fresh.

I do recommend being careful of this, my dad did that to me and my hands weren’t right for a month lol. In full disclosure, that was in NW Colorado where the ambient humidity is something like 15% lol.

A couple of observations. I use a similar approach to breaking in a new glove. Just wear it and keep it moving. This has the additional effect of strengthening your hand. Another thing I do during this time is experiment with adjusting the straps for a couple of reasons. One is that it gets me familiar with how the straps work (it varies between gloves) and lets me get a feel for how the glove ends up fitting best. Personally I like to have my glove a little loose, but other goalies like them super tight. The reason for this (for me) is that I’m actually left handed (I catch left) and doing things like putting on my mask and picking up my water bottle with my right hand feels weird. Go figure. In the main, it’s really about just getting comfortable with my glove. If I haven’t played in a bit (a couple of weeks) I’ll do it again just to get used to how it feels. I’m doing this right now because my wife and I just got back from vacation. Cheers.

Do you use INT or SR gloves? Sometimes the way INT gloves are designed, the break in process can be a little more difficult.

@@VOGoalie I have a tender for over 40 years. I like to put a Soft Ball in mine rap it and steam them when I am in the shower until it has the shape I want. Don't get rid of your old glove until you are comfortable with it. Good luck Bud!!

I've been a goalie for around 5 years now and something I just learned was on breakaways you want to almost shadow the puck with your glove so they can't go top shelf on you. you basically put you glove right above the puck

@@VOGoalie definitely, sometimes if I'm nice to a ref, they'll blow the whistle like half a second before a goal goes in during a scramble and call no goal. Other times, however, refs just hate my team, as in the actually help the other team. One guy even kinda deflected pucks "on accident" right to their guys in front of the net.

Hey Wayne! Great video again brother. I've been in the net for about 12 years and I'm completely self taught. That doesn't mean I've never been shown anything, just that I've never had a "Coach" so I thrive on services like what you provide here. I just wanted to throw in a little counter comment with regard to breaking in catchers. I too use a warrior G3 catch and love it but I chose not to break it in. I like my blocker to present to the shooter the largest possible blockage and I find that if I try to break in my catch too much, I have to force it open the whole game instead of forcing it closed for roughly 10 to 15 times for the glove saves in a game. Also, watch Goalies like Varlamov. He lets the puck hit his catch then either twists his wrist so that the glove is facing upward or he covers the open side with his chest. My overall strategy here is to decrease the shot window for the shooters and still control rebounds. Thoughts?

Sounds like a sound strategy if it works for you! We all have different personal preferences with how we play the game! As you mentioned you have a G3 catch, have you ever thought of installing the velcro practice palm to help with keeping the glove open? Just a thought that the practice insert would be helpful for you in this case!

I wish someone would have explained to me earlier, that you "Pinch" the glove closed. More with the tips of your fingers, more so than mashing your hand closed to catch the puck. And I agree the best way to break that glove in is to wear it as much as possible. Keep up the great work on these videos.

Yeah it’s all in the break as I found recently when getting a new glove (I’ve been away from the game for a while so it’s almost like starting over with gear). I’m a “fingers to palm” closer so I went with the 590 break CCM Premiere gloves have after finding the “pinch” gloves like the CCM EFlex uncomfortable.

The glove I’ve been using for the last 5 years has essentially always been ruined because I put it under a couch. Lol My warrior rg4s come Friday and I’m not making that mistake again. Although I hear the glove is pretty much already broken in off the bat.

Tip: for a new goalie, get softer pads because it is easier to learn the basics of the butterfly and butterfly sliding. A stiffer pad will be better for a more experienced goalie

Thanks! This is an insightful tip! I think as a beginner, a softer pad is more forgiving and helps reinforce covering rebounds. A stiffer pad that gives off livelier rebounds means more second chances so I can see how that would be harder for a new goalie. Interesting!

My best glove tip is to buy pro returns. Got a Bauer trapper from when Harri Sateri played for the Grand Rapids Griffins. Best glove I have ever owned and it was pretty much already broken in when purchased.

I like the Turco grip on the rake. So, when in a game, do you point out weaknesses in the other goalies game? Or do you respect the position and let the players figure it out.

Thanks! The Turco Grip is totally muscle memory! As for in games, my league is pretty chill with regards to being competitive, so I usually just let the forwards do their own thing. When I was in a more competitive league, if my guys asked me for advice, I'd give it, but it's that fine line between not telling them how to play their position (for fear they'll tell me how to play mine)! The best advice I ever gave my guys was to just get their shots on net and make the other goalie work. 100% of shots that go wide never result in goals!

Thanks! Currently breaking in my new glove and wasn’t terribly into the idea of leaving it under running water. One of the biggest things I’m having trouble with is my leg pads. I was a 90s hybrid goalie so I always strapped them tight down low and loose up top. With the newer style of pads that almost want to force you into butterfly I’m finding that strapping tight down low really puts some torque on your joints. Any suggestions or a video on the right feel to give you better rotation but not be dangerously loose?

Not gloves related, butt he best tip I can give is about skates. If your feet are not comfortable and are in pain when you are playing, it will affect your game a lot more than you know. Having skates that are comfortable, do not pinch your feet and cause lace bite, and that fit perfectly, you will notice how you can focus on the play and the game more, and not how your feet feel. You'll feel more comfortable in your stance, as well as when making your normal saves. Wayne, good video sir. I also agree that the best way to actually break in a glove is by using it, opening it and closing as often as you can. I do use the keeps method, which is using hot water, but overall, if you are not just opening and closing your glove, it will not close to the way you prefer a glove to open and close.

For smell, it's best to spray with a vinegar/rubbing alcohol mix with waterm you can add some essential oil drops like lemon or oranges and you will always be nominated for best smelling goalie

Using the gloves worked best for me. Used them hard during the first couple of practices. I also walked around the house with them on. Mmmmmm gotta love the smell of a new set of gloves.

As a former goalie and long time ref, the only thing I actually recommend handing a puck to the ref, and you have to practice this at home for a week or two, but learn to flip it from the pocket to the flat area of the glove beside the thumb.

Hi there, My son is a young goalie( 12 years old) playing at a higher level. He has had his new glove for over a year. The last while he has been complaining that it’s stiff and crusty after it’s been left out to dry. We always unpack equipment right after we get home and hang it up in our mud room to dry for a day or two. Also we use “gear halo” inside to help keep it from stinking. So any advice on you to treat or prevent that stiff crusty inside? It make it really hard for him the close the glove and he is getting frustrated. Many thanks in advance.

Ultimate break in method (carried over from baseball): Massage in a small amount of shaving cream (foamy stuff) in the palm on both sides. Then place 2-3 tennis balls in the netting (depending on how crazy a basket you want) and 2 hockey pucks (not stacked) in the palm (make sure it still seals at the bottom of the palm). Then wrap it with a couple rubber bands (snug but but smashed) and let it sit for a day

Great point. It does take practice to catch pucks using the T. Some gloves there days are designed to "funnel" those shots to the palm into the pocket, but snagging it in the pocket initially is always a great feeling! Thanks for your comment!

I like to steam mine and then rub Dubbin to keep the leather supple. I will wrap a soft Ball in mine and steam it many time and use a leather conditioner to keep it from drying out. I have found this from over 40 years as a tender!!!

I see a lot of people pop the top of the T to open the glove. Dont do this too much as you can get inverted closures (the T bends in on itself). I tend to open the glove on my leg pad to open the face before the play starts.

Great tip! Pushing the T on your pads in an inverted position can lead to the T collapsing when catching a puck. I think it's on most modern day manufacturer's radar these days, but I have had older gloves in years past that suffered from this!

Thanks for your comment! I always take things one shot at a time. Try not to worry about the score and focus on making one save. Then a second and try to string a bunch of saves together. Also focusing on the fundamentals of positioning and staying square can also help! GL and know that you'll probably have more fun than the other goalie (who may stand there the entire game!)

A tip for blocker: If a shot goes to your blocker, don't make it rebound in front of you; instead, try to aim the puck to a corner.

@@pyryhillosalo probably just a low-level CCM glove. Everybody I know that has one has taken years to break it in. I outgrew mine before the thing could close. CCM's pro stuff is great, but the lower-end stuff is kinda bad. I mean, I guess you get what you pay for but other brands' low-end gloves break in fine

Not really a glove tip but if u are having trouble picking up ur stick if u drop it you can roll about an inch or so thick nob on the end of ur stick and that also makes it wear poke checks don’t fly out of ur hand and if u really wanted to u could cut the tape in half so when ur rolling it, it is a lot thinner and lighter

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh haaaaaaaaa :-) 1) We're Warrior Goalies, so tell them our gloves rock. Why? Because Warrior gloves are pretty broken in, not like totally totally... But-- in the way that they open and close easier. Less stiff. I do tend to sit around/stand about/do things while opening and closing it though. I find my sweat is a great for the breaking in process on any glove I've had. Ha! Yuck! LoL. 2) Good tips on paddle grip. My favourite thing to do is attempt to pick up my stick when it's flat on the ice. Not trying to advertise or promote but I love BUTTENZ...SENTRY grips. The knob is great for grabbing and getting a grip (WOW...anyway) or handl-- plus it doesn't leave residue on my gloves...blocker glove. 3) I do this but also do a fast flick to send the puck up in the air and I catch it...then offer it to the ref. Great video man! Stay awesome!

Find a good goalie coach. AND DO NOT GO WITH THE CLUB ONES. I went to a highschool goalie coach, who is the goalie coach for varsity (Near AAA), and he immediately pointed out 3 MAJOR things I was doing wrong. I had more improvement within a month than I had in multiple years. Clubs are only in it for the money. They purposely wont make you better so that they can keep you longer.
