Most hockey goalie glove break-in methods only give you a little better snap, but what about making it as big and wide as possible? Fortunately, my easy glove break-in method, which is a take on the popular KEEPS33 method, accomplishes both! My most requested video, here's how to break-in a goalie glove: just takes a little water, a towel, and something heavy.. that's it! Enjoy!

I just bought a Bauer Sub-zero glove for my son. I did something similar to this, but instead than soaking the entire glove, I warmed up water in a pot and used one of those baby syringes (the ones you use to give advil to your child). I then placed the tip of the syringe inside the seam of the glove (where the break of the glove runs) and poured the hot water down into the seam. I did it from the top of the glove and at the bottom. I then followed your instructions and placed it under the couch for a day (making sure that the glove is closed just like my son would have closed it)... Works great!

Well done Tom! As todays technology continues to strive for perfection, your method of combining water, towel, and a weight is easy and straightforward. Didn't need to bake, or buy another tool of some kind. Only thing I might add is before you put it under the weight for 24 hours, maybe consider putting one puck in the top part of the break just before the webbing.

great video, i'm just getting back into being goalie for inline hockey, but had been using well used gloves before, i recently got a pretty well new glove and am going to be trying this method to break it in....one question, what part do you set the couch/whatever is heavy on to not ruin anything?
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 7 лет назад
Thanks, Wally! I set the couch/weight specifically on the thumb-side of the glove along the break. Just don't set it on the thumb protector.. I dented one that way, LOL. It came right now -- miraculously -- but it nearly gave me a heart attack. Good luck, man!

Hey Tomy, Great video, nice to see everything laid exactly as you need to do it. Just thought I would share something to help anyone that may have had problems with glove break ins. I have had problems breaking in a Vaughn pro return glove using Keeps33 four or five times at least, think it may have been a practice palm or something. Finally gave up and got a Passau 60 with a Maltese palm. I am amazed with the closure and feel of this glove straight out of the box. Have you tried any of the Passau gloves Tomy?

I currently use a Brian's Subzero 3 pro 1pc cuff, and I followed this video, and the break in went so much smoother! Question, every since T-ball I've had the same problem, I can't catch. For the catching impaired goalies that are starting for a D3 team at 39 yrs old no one has ever heard of (by default as no other goalie was available), any suggestions for gloves that would help. Primary action is the puck bounces off the cuff (if it hits the netting, rarely, it stays), at least if I'm anywhere near the puck with my glove, and I'm sure my head tracking is probably just awful. So outside wearing a glove the size of those foam #1 hands, what else would you suggest as this team really has zero alternatives for a tender. Sincerely, We Are Marshall, and We Are probably screwed two seasons in a row...
@t0myTTV

Funny enough, I had the same issue. I grew up playing baseball, and so when I switched to goalie it was a hassle, and then trying to play baseball years ago I had a problem trying to go back. One thing you might consider is the CCM 600 series, which in my opinion feels a lot like a baseball glove.

@t0myTTV

If you air it out after every use, it'll never come! But if it does... the only thing you can really do is apply leather softener to the inside of the glove. The crust is from damage from the sweat that breaks down the material. Good luck!

Would you reccomend the single t or the double t for a goalie catcher? What are the advantages and disadvantages for both?
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 8 лет назад
+yvonne Lou I always use a single T simply because I think it looks better. But the supposed benefit of a double T is that it cradles the puck a bit better than a single T. Whether that's true or not, I don't really know. But more and more NHLers who used to use single Ts are now using double. Pretty interesting.

@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 8 лет назад
+Pancakes Hockey Weird! I've never had that happen. If I were you, I'd just do it over again, and this time make sure to time it so that you can use the glove the same night as the second part of the process so that you can physically break it in a little more on the ice before it can have an opportunity to dry out and get stiff again. Hope that helps, Pancakes!

My vaughn V6 1100i Pro custom spec glove is really hard to close even after this process. Ive tried other techniques but none seem to work. So I thought If I cant close it are there any exercises I can do to strengthen my hand.
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 8 лет назад
You can work on your grip strength. One common one is to get a wood dowel, tie a rope on it, and at the end of the rope put like a milk jug with water or concrete in it. Roll it up, roll it down, over and over. Works on your forearms and grip strength. Good luck!

I have never tried this but I see a potential issue with his last step which could possibly crush the structure of your glove depending on the weight and where it sits. Water doesn't seem like it would effect the goalie in any negative way as it is going to be wet every time you play with it so that shouldn't be a big deal.

Hey! I'm having a little trouble. I have the CCM E3.9 Intermediate sized Glove and its a very good glove but I am still having trouble closing it after 1 season. I have done the keeps method twice already and still no results. I am not sure if it is because my hand is too small or if it is the glove. I have noticed that there is a point near the bottom on the glove near the break. When i close the glove, there is still around an inch or 2 of space between the palm and the fingers. On the bottom, there seems to be a stiff part of the glove that is preventing the fingers from closing all the way. Is there something that I did wrong? Or would it be either the glove being dysfunctional or my hand being too small. Its nearing the end of the season so I have the rest of the summer to fix this. Looking forward to a response! Thanks

For strapping system I've talked about it a few times in my goalie hangouts, which I try to do 2-4 times/year, but the problem with that is it can be highly dependent on the style of the goalie and the pad model. I can see what I can do, though! Now, for washing my gear, one of my first reviews ever was the Rocket Sport Wash, which works AWESOME. +Shane Gaglione I'd say the issue in your case is that it was a One70 glove; I should've said I really only recommend this method for pro gloves, as the senior and lesser gloves tend to have more fragile materials. Now, I DID do this with my NXG glove and it worked BEAUTIFULLY, no problems at all. But you're right that the "lesser" gloves can become floppy in this method, though again it's all about what you want from the glove. Hope that helps!

Are you sure it's a pro palm or is it perhaps his practice glove? If it's the latter, no matter how much breaking-in you do, it'll likely never close all that well. Doesn't hurt to give it a try, though! Good luck!

@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 7 лет назад
Did you time it so that the end of this process backed up with a game night? It's best to do this method and then play with it that night. That way it'll be nice and flexible (though damp) for some physical break-in. To be fairly honest, if you like it as fappy as possible, your best bet is either using it for hours on end or doing the physical part of this break-in over and over: closed under a weight, open under a weight, over and over again. I'd do it for like an hour each time and do it for up to a couple days, if you want it really, really fappy. Hope that helps!

Tommy, do you have any tips, I've done this method so many times. Every time the glove will dry overnight and still be extremely stiff, and when I flatten my glove the next day it forms a wavy palm, what should I do?
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 7 лет назад
Weird! I've never had that happen. Are you using a pro glove, senior glove, or "lesser" glove? Sometimes that can happen with less quality materials, but typically it comes out perfectly. Also, at the end of the overnight drying session, it shouldn't come out completely dry; it should still be damp, at the very least. Does it come out dry?
@cmags3176
@cmags3176 7 лет назад
GoalieCreaseNet I have Vaughn Lt68 which is pretty much a Lt88 put just made in a junior size, after I use hot water, I place a puck right in the palm and I tie it with skate lace, then I will put a 15 pound weight on it, or put it under my mattress. After it is damp it has finger curl and still stiff, and I can't cover the puck without one side being up, which allows people to pull the puck from my glove. I'm using a Bauer rx4 for roller hockey, had it for 3 years and the hot water worked beautifully, it is perfect expect for a wavy Palm but it still closes with no effort, I have to try and break in my Vaughn because the Rx4 is falling apart after 3 years.
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 7 лет назад
Well that's not my method at all, lol. It could be getting the waves and finger curl because of the puck and skate lace tying it down in an unnatural position. That's why I don't recommend doing either of those two things. Especially not with a Vaughn, which historically has been notorious for finger curling. Not sure what to tell you, other than not to do that method next time you get a glove. Follow my directions perfectly and that should result in a very nicely and perfectly broken-in glove with a natural break. Sorry, man!

Just open the cuff and expose it. I wouldn't use a hair dryer; that applies additional heat to it. We just want to air dry it so it's ready for your next outing. In fact, it's best if it's slightly damp when you use it next.. should break-in very well!

Hello. I kinda feel like this is a stupid question. but i'm new to galtending so i'm going to go ahead and ask anyway... I just got a new Catcher. ordered it online And i'm having problems breaking it in. When i have my hand stuffed in there, like all the way in there i cannot close the glove because the break is on the middle of my hand. The glove should fit me according to the size chart and it does not come in bigger sizes than SR of course .. But when i wear the glove more loose and dont stick my hand completely in. so my palm does not touch the inside of the pocket completely - i am able to close the glove quite easy. So my question it; Is the glove too big? too small? It this the way gloves are suppose to fit? Sorry for my poor english. i appreciate any response.
@t0myTTV
@t0myTTV 7 лет назад
That's very interesting, and I haven't heard of that before. I'd suggest playing around with any hand and wrist strapping that might be on your glove. See if any combination lets it stay on the hand in the right position. If not, perhaps the addition of a golfing glove will help! That's what Lundy does.
@cragortoz
@cragortoz 7 лет назад
Sorry for the wall of text. But im trying hard to figure this out. Its a Vaughn Ventus LT88 glove. It only has a strap over the hand so i dont have super much to adjust. Ive used your break-in method once and im really thinking about using it again. It closes very easy after first phase where you close the glove. But after turning it around and putting weight on the back to open the glove it turned hard to close again. About the finger placement and how far i can reach inside the glove. If i press with both hands i can- with the tip of my fingers- reach the end of the finger stall. So i dont think the glove is too big for me. ( Maybe a little too small ? ) I tried loosening the wrist strap and the glove seemed a little easier to close. not much though. also i have to mention my wrist kinda twists right at the strap. How many times can i use this method? As many times as it takes for the glove to close easy?
