I see we're in the same club, Tom. But be aware, people, we're not bald, we're skittish. We have kicked all our hair off, hopefully it'll come back in our next molt

@@TomsBigSpiders yes, it is a C. Versicolor 3/4 inch baby. I know you don't personally recommend them as a very first species, but I have done my homework. First it will be housed in a fifty dram vial with extra holes for cross ventilation, substrate and some twigs for her to make her home on. Then I plan on going to the dark den arboreal, and then the 8x8x12 arboreal from TC! SO excited, I'm definitely going to be a fancy enclosure guy 😂

Great video, you have some gorgeous ladies! It's funny, photos/videos of these guys never seem to properly convey just how big they are (footage in general, not just yours!). I saw my first one in real life at the Philly zoo a few months ago, a ~9-10" T stirmi, and was really shocked and awed by just how huge it was! It was like, "OH, that spider IS seriously massive". Makes me think that people who write them off as "just a big brown spider" haven't ever seen one in person, because it was seriously breathtaking to behold! How could anyone think "it's just..." about something so big???

@@TomsBigSpiders well, based on photos I thought she was only about 4-5" DLS, turned out she was already AT LEAST 6-7" lol!! She was in a 12x12 exoterra when I got her, and I transferred her to a 60qt sterilite with plenty of deep sub. The rehousing went great even though I was super nervous! Within an hour she found her starter burrow and got comfy in there with her legs contentedly sticking out the front, and I gotta say, my heart swelled with pride =D All of your coverage of the genus helped prepare me somewhat, but you were so right when you said these guys are awe inspiring simply bc of their sheer size. Hi Tom! Awesome video as always! Your blondi is stunning! Unfortunately I got full haired in the face, eyes, and throat by my apophysis male and those three days of hell were enough for me to not keep Theraphosa. It's mass rehousing weekend and I knocked out 5 today. Everyone was very well behaved, thankfully. Also, my Pseudhapalopus sp. Columbia moulted and has its adult colours- absolutely stunning! Definitely going to have to get that one in a new enclosure as well. Also, funny little story for you. I had a fake plastic skull in with my Queen for ages for decoration. She recently decided she didn't like it and threw it in her water dish. It made me think about the ping pong balls since it was the same general size, shape, and material, and she just said "absolutely not." Hope all is well with you! Although I'm not keeping them anymore ( the Hairs) I still like them. And they are not just big and brown. Espacially T.blondi is showing burgendy red Hairs on the Legs, the Abdomen has a fine silken sheen and sometimes at the right angle of the light the legs can almost look white. And the Stridulation is just as impressive as the whole Spider.

Was thinking of an idea the other day of somehow constructing a liquified feeder pulp like a cricket smoothie for tarantulas to drink after a moult rather than sucking the juice out of their moults for more of a chance to get an intact moult and also benefit the spider with nutrients which i think would help them harden up after a moult

I use Ready 2 Use clear storage bins from Staples (as Dave's Little Beasties uses) and I use the 64 litre for my Theraphosas. As the climate here on the prairies in Canada is bone dry (especially in winter), i had to put them in these large containers even when they were slings/juveniles as my T Blondi had a bad molt in a smaller enclosure (could not keep it moist enough).
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 4 дня назад
I've used similar sized plastic bins myself - I have some ziploc ones that worked great. It gets cold here in the winter as well, and the heat dries out the air, but I run a humidifier and I've never had an issue with the slings or juveniles drying out if I give them deep sub. I'm glad that you found something that works for you!

Hi, Stuart! I have a room above my garage with its own heat. I keep the temp set at 73 in the winter. At my old house, I used an oil filled portable heater to raise the temp in the room a couple of degrees. I find it safer to heat the entire room than to try to heat individual enclosures. What are your temps (inside) in the winter time?

@@TomsBigSpiders hi Tom. Thank you for the feedback and help. I’m situated in South Africa and we in winter at the moment. We do have rather cold temperatures at night lately and outside temperatures around 4 degrees celcius and I keep my spider room heated with external heat lamps at a temperature of between 21-23 degrees celcius. I have around 80 tarantulas so I’m so glad you confirmed my suspicions on heating by rather heating the room than using heat strips. The spiders are eating a bit during winter and have even had a few molt, which I assume means the spiders are happy? I must be completely honest Tom, I’m a huge fan of your content and is my favorite tarantula channel on RU-vid. Here in South Africa we don’t have many RU-vid channels, and I would be honored if you wouldn’t mind looking at my channel and subscribing if you mint mind. It does a great job raising the temperature in a small to medium sized room, and you can set the temp to what you need. www.amazon.com/PELONIS-PHO15A2AGW-Electric-Adjustable-Thermostat/dp/B08TGXDRNZ/ref=sr_1_5?crid=38GMD8BPG1ZC9&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.k28RWbA1M6ZWMQ3ixUMqASPIWknKnCOT9btRnV1_A_8jyyvTXuQTBJ_6EZPvIRuUcTO40Nnybi8YHfcgNs4T4TArJ81d3RvykdhtQzrkKut1jNzIXDAthLTYx8BOOT9a8qTH23s8TpcPydiL001Y0940_o6oATsnEtzMx2Ug-lbjtvL1i3RXrVOkw9x1jhRikai396AvbBMsZDUxOuiHe3C7YDZ1P6HbB2vtzJgCrwz6akFGiH4ZwG9gSie99RNXWLmn5OPQxQtlODid5UkWz4pgTsFtknUkQke6foH7lqk.vDyeJcWAS_K7e40b5mER9jdQhqK-rwpTgidhUWiD4gY&dib_tag=se&keywords=oil+heater&qid=1719670630&sprefix=oil+he%2Caps%2C205&sr=8-5 I find using one of these is easier than heating with tape. Hey tom, I just got 2" inch Blondi last year. Do they get less humidity dependent as they get bigger? its about 4" inch now and I'm kinda stressing putting it in a bigger enclosure since I'm afraid the enclosure would get mold because of the humidity
@AdsArachnids
@AdsArachnids 4 дня назад
I too gloved up when I rehoused my T.Blondi recently and it was totally necessary as I got a furious hair attack. Mine is still looking quite slender after two years, when do they start chunking out in your experience?
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 4 дня назад
Hey, bud! Hope all is well. If I remember correctly, mine started chunking out at around 6-7" or so. At that point, they tend to thicken up a bit. I check out one of my rehousing videos from when mine were around 2 and a half, and they were around 6" and still pretty gangly.

hi Tom, I live in Canada and unfortunate dubias and most feeder roaches in general are considered invasive and we don't have easy access to them, do you think a Theraphosa would be at all viable to raise on crickets and worms, I feel like it just wouldn't be enough :(
@shsd7579
@shsd7579 4 дня назад
You can have discoid roaches
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 4 дня назад
Sorry, I thought that I had a note about this in the video. Yes, you could feed them large crickets or worms. You would just have to feed more of them in a sitting, and maybe a bit more often than you would if you were using larger prey.
@AverageCanadianStinky
@AverageCanadianStinky 3 дня назад
@@shsd7579 this. discoid roaches are legal. of course things like speeding and cannabis use prior to 2018 were also illegal. you can find whatever you want on kijiji. so obviously a large part of the community doesn't care about some pencil pushers laws.

I have a question if you could help me out. I have a Gammastola pulchra juvenile. This lil critter climbs all over the place. Climbing the walls, and on the decor. I changed the substraight thinking it was too damp only to find the same behavior. Appetite seems to be good, and always fresh water. Any thoughts. Thank you happy 4th.

If the heteropoda maxima is rhe largest spider due to leg span, wouldn't that make the Apophysis the largest out of the three Theraphosa due to longest leg span? 😅
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 2 дня назад
There have been many debates over which spider is the largest. Unfortunately, a photo of a molt (that, as far as anyone knows, could have been doctored) that only a handful of people have seen does not constitute proof. Someone would have to have an adult that large and have it measured by someone of authority.

Tom, how dare you prioritize your health and comfort by wearing gloves instead of displaying some unnecessary macho behavior that results in you being miserable all day? I pay good money to see ... oh, wait... this is free. In that case, I really appreciate all the information you put out and your love of these animals really shows. Thank you for making these videos for us viewers. Your spiders are really beautiful.
