3 Hard Truths for Disabled People on the Dating Field

This video is inspired by stories from disabled people and my own past experiences. Some people with disabilities--out of fear, desperation, etc.--don't reveal their disability up front to people they meet online and start "talking to" (modern precursor to dating). When the other person finally learns the truth, they may feel angry and betrayed, or they may civilly but firmly end the budding relationship. I've been guilty of this in the past, too, but it's not unusual to see the disabled person take to social media with a "Woe is me; people are such jerks" perspective. And, due to our societally-ingrained pity for the disabled, most respond with an abundance of sympathy. Meanwhile, the disabled person takes no accountability for their actions and continues setting themselves up for failure.
Watch the vid to hear my two cents on the topic.

I have dyspraxia, a lisp and mental health issues such as depression or social anxiety, sadly i’m so tired of explaining to people why i’m not clumsy, it’s just a neurological condition, why am i talking so “weirdly” even with to family, and why i am not lazy i just have fatigue all the time due to my body. it’s so frustrating and i try so hard to hide my disabilities every single time to be “normal” for the society. And when it comes to dating i have this tendency to be someone else because i’m afraid of the judgmental people, and rejections since i had to deal with it my whole life. i’m almost 19 years old, this is quite painful sometimes uh, okay im grateful to have legs, hands, a brain, moreover since most of my disabilities are invisible, nobody knows my struggles every single days. btw, thank you so much for this! i discovered your content through my recommandations and im glad to had clicked on this video! (english isn’t my native language so i hope it makes sense) ❤️ you’re strong, lots of love

I'm sorry to hear about the health issues you're struggling with and people's rude and unfair judgements. It sucks that people have a hard time being empathetic. I've been exactly where you are with hiding my disability and feeling ashamed. But hearing you say what you are grateful for tells me you have a strong spirit! So many people can't thrive in life because they dwell in resentment, but you are on the right path. Things will get better, dear! ♥ And thank you so much for your encouragement!

Lol@weirdly!👏🤣 I had a keychain from Spencer's that read, "I'm not weird, I'm gifted." I take Lamotragine for my SAD-it's so bad I think everyone out there who laughs is laughing at ME. Cry, have panic attacks-the med takes care of that, but I think it's the antidepressants and fighting back the depression that make us all "weirdly". They DO "change your personality".

This advice is great! My partner was not transparent and I still have so much resentment. Things i didnt think I would need to do in a relationship I now have to do. Disability is HARD. pee, doctors appointments, anxiety, medical trauma, not able to go to certain places, & the lack of spontanetiety really gets to me. But I wasnt fully explained to the extent of these things. My patience is soooo low. I wish I could love him fully but the disability especially PTSD is getting to me. Its odd how you can love a person but not enjoy any of the things required to be with them. I am holding on hoping we can afford extra help one day. But I am not sure if I can do this forever. I told my partner he had 1-2 years left if things stay the same.

Hi Lily! I don’t know how your video came up on my feed but I’m so glad it did! I don’t have a physical disability, though I do have recurring struggles with depression and anxiety. Seeing someone like you - well spoken, lucid, and reasoned - explain your condition and acknowledge how being transparent is crucial (on your part) and accepting/embracing (on your “dates” part) is truly instructive. Your advice has relevance to many, even those who many not have a designated “disability”. I will add for what it’s worth that you are lovely, and your willingness to be vulnerable is magnetic! Thank you for showing courage worthy of a lioness!

Currently dating a woman with a disability (diastrofisk dysplasi), we meet on a dating site and her first line basicly stated that she had a disability. One of the perks with this is that the guys that are only out for one thing on these sites... stays clear from contacting her. Sidenote: Going to her this weekend and gonna ask her if it's time for us to go officially boyfriend/girlfriend, wish me luck :)

Chadwick White, there are quite a number of people with disabilities far worse than yours and they're still able to work. Most of them babysit for their neighbors and their families. Never use disability as an excuse to not at least try to apply yourself. I may have mild cerebral palsy but I don't look at my disability as an excuse to not be productive.
@michele5695
@michele5695 2 года назад
@@steveboone1498 how ignorant. All disabilities are not equal.. I'd love to work, but can't. What makes you think employers will want to accommodate a serious disability
@steveboone1498
@steveboone1498 2 года назад
@@michele5695 I believe that even people with severe disabilities can be as productive as any able bodied person. Sometimes you have to do the best you can. If any company won't hire you because of your disability then they're in violation of the Americans with disabilities act.

Why do you have the need to spew shit all over this man. Do you even know his disease ? Do you know the effects of all diseases on earth? The arrogance is mindblowing. Besides did he say he didnt have hobbies or do things ? Fact is that to be able to sustain yourself you need to be able to work a certain amount and thats what hes talking about, not babysitting for an hour every week which he might be able to do, its completely irrelevant. I have been so sick with my neurological illness that I cant walk nor sit without puking all over the place and getting semi unconcious in the process. Im suppose to work while thats happening? Fuck off.

I am happy that you made a video about this . I can not really fin any dating advice for disabled people online . I mean I find videos of people virtue signaling like o look how good a friend I am to this disabled person . Sure they don't say that but that is pretty much what those videos are about or I find videos like success stories about disabled people that found love . It is difficult not to bring appearance into it because as people it is just in our dna to be attracted to something that or somebody that looks good . Sometimes I swallow my pride and ill date somebody that is not what I would call my ideal partner but then they get a big head and start thinking they deserve better . I went to a speed dating event for disabled people . I can not say that ill ever do that again . None of the women there had anything more than an elementary school education , a lot of them were missing teeth and the rest were yellow , one of the women was 500 pounds and farted in the chair before I sat down . I myself am not very disabled . I do not have a job and that is usually the main deal breaker with women .

@@ClayLud Well I live in the mid west USA so pretty much all the women ar like that lol . Not really some of the women here are actually pretty hot but that doesn't mean that they are not dumber than a rock or that they would date me . A lot of people are not even decent people anymore . Some times it is like it would be nice to just hangout with a lady but they will take advantage of you any way they can and you can not do anything about it because they are protected by the court system.

I have it clearly listed that I have Ehlers danlos syndrome. I have a service dog and I’ve got pictures of her on my profile. I even say that sometimes I use a wheelchair, ect. But most people don’t fully read the profiles they just look at the pictures.. then comes the dreaded question when they message you “what do you do for a living?” As soon as I answer disabled and explain more information about Ehlers danlos they run or respond with I prefer someone who works and isn’t lazy and being a drain on the world... it’s so sad people group everyone together in one box. I don’t even try to date anymore because it’s not worth being ghosted or ripped apart over things you can not control

Just wanted to say, try not to get discouraged about dating or anything else that might arise in life. People that put everyone into a category have a disability of their own.(short sightedness). Everyone is unique in their own way. Though I am not disabled I do have friends that are and I’ve seen their struggles.. It shouldn’t be , what they have to offer, there physical attributes. But who they are as a person. Hope all gets better for you... Thank you
@alltimelily

That sucks! People have really said disabled people are lazy drains on the world?! Wow. I'm sorry that's been your experience. I hope that people's attitudes will shift as we disabled people work to address stigma and increase awareness.

As a paraplegic with Spina Bifida Ive found that people with certain insecurities take out whatever problems they have on disabled people. I only know this because I tend to attract such people and THOSE people are a drain on the world with their toxic thoughts
@ThornyRoseV

Its best to be honest in the profile and be upfront. Best to weed out the assholes as soon as possible. Im still amazed that I found the love of my life on tinder. I was very harsh in the beginning because people treat us ( people with disability) like shit and I didnt want to get hurt. He prevailed and we fell in love.
