My 94 yo mom in law cooked them “to death”. Almost black & the best. She used old pressure cookers & beat up aluminum pans. Made the best Chocolate Pound Cake & Strawberry Cobbler ever. She would be 106 now. Picked cotton for neighbors, made butter, never had A/C. Never moved from her home place. Whole ‘nother world. Days gone by. Georgia

I jumped the gun on this comment and posted before the video started🤗 but I have learned from trial and error cooking in a dive bar....I drain out all the water from the can coat in whatever kind of grease I have bacon/olive oil/whatever(you can saute some onions in whatever oil/grease before coating the beans as well) add just enough water to cover then just a sprinkle of sugar, cook on high to get most of the water out....basically the same process in reverse!!! Yum!!!

My mother added sugar to nearly all her vegetables especially corn because it made them taste like they were fresh out of the garden. She also froze okra by picking it, putting it in freezer bags without cutting or even washing it. She would freeze and then that winter she would wash it in warm water, cut it , roll it in corn meal and fry it. It tasted like it was fresh from the garden, too.

Love your green beans. A little tip,...anything that's made of stainless steel can be easily cleaned with oven cleaner. Just take the pot out of doors and spray it and forget it for a while. In most cases, you won't have to scrub or scour, maybe a once over with a scrouring pad. The same is true for Corning ware. Burnt on casserole will lift off after a soak in oven cleaner. No use wearing yourself out. LOL....Gary Schneider Alameda, California

My mom and grandmother always put a “pinch of sugar” in all their vegetables. They were depression era cooks and very southern. Best meals ever.

I do that and add a little bit of minced garlic and salt, pepper and onion powder in with mine if I'm wanting to do it a little bit differently than I normally do from the bacon grease, pieces of bacon and onion.

Can’t wait to try it! 1 teaspoon of sugar is nothing. That vapors off anyway. The sugar replaces the sugar that canned beans loses.

I am so glad you did this video the only green beans I make your recipe. I appreciate you showing us how to do this….thank you.. I learned years ago from a good cook you always add sugar to your vegetables it brings out the flavor.I also heard that on the food network. People try the sugar you really don’t taste it but it brings bean to another level.

I’m just a bachelor, not a granny, but I use vinegar, brown sugar, crushed red pepper, smoked turkey tails, salt, and black pepper, and let them cook down well. Everybody loves them and I must say they are pretty dang good. My last gf said they’re the best 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m telling y’all, for anyone who likes country style green beans, you need to try this method at least once. They are some of the best green beans you will ever eat. They taste like they’ve been cooked with country bacon or something. But you have to follow her directions and cook them exactly like she says. They are absolutely delicious!

I do used canned beans but I cook them down in my stainless steel pot with bacon grease, onion & potatoes. Just like you I keep the liquid and cook them down till most of the liquid is gone . My husband loves them & he’s from the country!

Tammy, who got time for that, I say that jokingly😂‼️ Because I drain my green beans a little ,instead of waiting for all that liquid to boiled down. I follow the recipe some what. I put the sugar in but instead of oil I use butter and also add salt and pepper and onions . The sugar makes the difference ‼️👍🏾

Bar keepers friend will easily clean that stainless steel pot. Regular Ajax or commet will also work. Whichever you use, make a paste with it, spread it all over the pot and just let it sit a bit or even overnight if needed. It will all wipe away with a washcloth.

My German grandmother would cook them according to the meal. Sometimes just fresh green beans lightly cooked with a bit of butter and dill. Sometimes cooked down like this with a little bacon, onion and sweet vinegar. The beans were always from her garden. I preferred the yellow wax beans because as a child I thought the green beans were "furry". Grandma grew both.

Yep, down south, all veggies gets a little cane sugar or blackstrap, whether it be fried cabbage, green tomatoes, greens, squash, vegetable soup, soap beans, and, even spaghetti sauce, cornbread, biscuits and gravy. Just a touch, spoonful or two. Even if you're not from the south, everyone will love your Southern cooking!
