Thank you! And I know exactly how you felt.... cobbling together written information and watching videos that blitzed through everything or assumed familiarity was frustrating. Everyone needs to pray and I just *had* to try to make it easier for everyone I could! God Bless! -c

Thank you so much for these videos! I’m new to the LOTH (just got my 4-Volume set today) and I’m so excited to get started. Your videos have been a TREMENDOUS help in understanding how to start.

I use Psalm 95 every day as the Traditional Invititory Psalm. I also use the Traditional Doxology. All the Gospel Canticles are memorized.

When the alternative Invitatory Psalm (Ps 100, 67, 24) is used and this psalm again appears at the hour which it precedes, either Officium lectionis or Lauds, then Ps 95 takes its place. This is done only at the hour it precedes so that the psalm is not repeated again for that hour. Benedicamus Domino.

Thank you again for these. I personally think these books are setting a world record for user-UNfriendliness rivaled only by the instructions for IRS forms, but I still want to know how the books work for the situations once or twice a month when I have to pray with a group using books. (For my personal LOTH I use a phone app, it's only common sense.) It is really helpful to watch you go step by step through the books.

Thanks for the feedback! Volume 1 contains the General Instructions... also not user friendly, but give it a read through if you get the chance. And yes... group recitation can be "interesting".. our formation group hasn't quite gotten the hang of it yet. Even though there are only ten of us, we can't seem to stay in sync and it sounds atrocious! Hopefully it will smooth out over the next couple of years.. Stick with it and hopefully the group leader has a commanding and confident enough voice to keep everyone together!

Is it worth paying the extra money for the bonded leather or not really?
@cmcnicholas
@cmcnicholas 4 года назад
I think it is, but it's personal choice. I don't plan on ever buying another set, so I chose the leather bound assuming (and hoping) they will hold up better over the years. I also like uniformity... the vinyl set is 4 different colors, the leather is simple black with gold lettering on the spines... I think it just looks nicer too!!

@@cmcnicholas when do I swicth to book to 2 for lent because after sat there is no more office reading then on the catholic calendar it say ordinary time for 7 weeks does that mean we go to book 3 for a short time thanks brad Quakenbush

@@bradquakenbush6220 You should be in Vol 1 now. This ends this Sunday, January 12, 2020 at the Baptism of our Lord. On Monday the 13th, begin Volume 3. Volume 3 runs until Ash Wednesday on February 26th, 2020 when you will begin Volume 2. You will RETURN to Volume 3 on the Monday after Pentecost (June 1, 2020) and stay there until August 1st, 2020... But that's a tricky day.. you will START the day on Aug. 1 with Volume 3, but since it is a Saturday, your Evening Prayer and Night Prayer will start with Volume 4. Volume 4 will take you all the way up to November 28th, 2020 (Also a Saturday), so Evening and Night Prayer performed on the 28th will be taken from Volume 1 which will carry you through to 2021.

I noticed in the book it says that the Easter Vigil takes the place of Office of Readings for Easter Sunday, can you please explain why the Easter Vigil takes the place of the Office of Readings?
@cmcnicholas
@cmcnicholas 4 года назад
Remember that the Liturgy of the Hours is a part of the liturgical life of the church, which includes attending mass. The Easter Vigil is a much longer mass and begins at nightfall, AFTER Saturday evening prayer and night prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours and is to end BEFORE morning prayer on Easter Sunday. Do you see where I'm going here? Office of Readings traditionally falls in this spot between night prayer and morning prayer.... Because of its length and time of day, not everyone attends the vigil mass and choose to go to Easter Sunday mass only. As a result, those people will miss the extended readings (and there can be a LOT!) at the vigil mass. Hopefully you can follow the line of reasoning I'm going to lay out now: 1. The Liturgy of the Hours was always meant to be done in a group. You have undoubtedly noticed sections in the Ordinary that point to priest/deacon cues for leading the prayers. 2. The Office of Readings was traditionally done in the wee hours of the morning before the breaking of dawn and Morning Prayer (usually 2am). 3. The Easter Vigil Mass starts at nightfall and is to end by dawn (the "wee" hours as mentioned above). During the vigil mass, you are participating in numerous readings. This means that #1 and #2 have been performed and thus you have actually just performed the Office of Readings as originally intended in the Liturgy of the Hours! Also remember that the liturgical day ends at evening... Because you have performed the Office of Readings for Sunday on Saturday night (NOT EVENING) at the communal mass, you are now exempt from doing the readings AGAIN in private recitation before Morning Prayer. If you read the red text carefully in the LOTH for Easter Sunday, it states that "Those, therefore, who do not participate in the Easter Vigil should read at least four readings..." So to summarize as basically as I can... by participating in the Easter Vigil mass with all the readings, you are performing the Office of Readings of the Liturgy of the Hours and do not need to repeat it prior to Morning Prayer on Easter Sunday. If you did NOT attend the Easter Vigil mass, you are to continue with the Office of Readings laid out for Easter Sunday in the LOTH by picking at least 4 of the subsequent readings. Hopefully I cleared that up for you!!!

Nice! We did the migration route: Brooklyn -> Staten Island -> NJ. I lived in Port Richmond until we moved to NJ, but I went to Staten Island Tech in New Dorp and finished college at CSI in Sunnyside.
