This video I break down the three things that really opened my eyes shooting a trad bow. I have compound hunted for years and this was surprising #bowhunting

Archery is a great sport, especially traditional archery. Once you've mastered a stick bow with fingers the transition into a compound bow and release is much easier. I've always thought that it would be better for any new archer to start out with a stick bow and fingers to learn the fundamentals of archery before they graduated into a compound bow and release, but times have changed, (and I'm old school anyway). The key to any archery, though, is practice, practice and more practice. I know this for a fact because I used to shoot competitively on a national level as an amateur and professional. I shot a perfect score as a Junior Olympian at the 1972 Bear American Indoor Archery Championship with a recurve bow and fingers, and then eventually went on to win the 1977 Vegas Open as a professional with a compound and release. The Vegas Open was considered to be our national championship back then. The key to my success was as I mentioned before...practice, practice and more practice. Happy hunting and God bless!!!

Thats exactly what i discovered as well. Stepping back 2 or 3 yards is the way as opposed to stepping back 5 yards. Nice video. Thanks.

honestly I have killed close to 200 animals with a traditional bow. If I was shooting a compound all that time that number could easily be 600 and the amount of p and y bucks in my house would be 10 times more than there is now. BUT would not trade it for the world. Just wait until you kill an animal with a trad bow all done 100% mental and muscle.

Much easier transition from stick to wheels. I’ve shot stick since I was a baby I only bought a compound for fun. I put an arrow in an arrow first day with wheels. You shoot something with a stick you’ll never wanna take the wheels out again. Slow and steady wins the race. Shoot a stick long enough you can take time off and still cover a paper plate. It’s like a bike. Once you get it down you don’t forget

There are definitely some things that you need to consider when making the change from a compound bow to a stick bow.... For one I was shooting a Hoyt Alfa max which I bought back in 2009 to take on a Quebec Black bear hunt, I was shooting 65#'s with 60 % let off, which is not an option for a stick bow. So I started using a 40 # longbow to get my muscles used to drawing a trad bow , also you must learn good form and depending on how you aim and anchor " shot process " is everything in my opinion . you will also have to learn better woodsmen ship skills to get stick bow close say 20 yards max shooting , I like to get setup about 12-17 yards so there fore you are giving up 15-20 yards depending on your skill level . when I started shooting trad I would set up my targets around 5 - 15yards , and get accustomed to shooting good groups at each yardage , and yes this takes time and a lot of arrows down range , I liked your video and I like the fact you point out how close you started out and worked your way up to 15 yards , remember one thing about traditional archery it is a use it or lose it thing , you have to practice at lest 2-3 times a week or more . I started using just one arrow and tried to make each shot count as though its was a real hunting situation . Don't forget to practice out of a tree stand also.Take care and welcome to the trad world it is so rewarding , I haven't used my compound in 3 years ! good luck to you on your hunting adventures.

Going from 15 to 20 yards is the bubble for me. Still working on it, but I won’t be taking that 20 yard shot for now. Have you tried making your own wood arrows yet? I find shooting those are more enjoyable than shooting the carbons or the aluminums.

Shoot way outside your comfort zone. Shoot at 30 yards and enjoy the suck so that at 15 you drive nails.
