Install a camera too. And hidden locking spaces built into your van while building it out. I hide my laptop behind my toilet. Lots of AirTag hidden in your van and items that you want to recover if stolen. Good luck!

You can buy commercially available wire mesh window screens for the back windows. They mount inside the vehicle. Contractors use them to protect the windows from getting broken from cargo inside the van as well as for anti theft purposes. Would be a cost effective and “stealthy” addition.

Some of those shatterproof films are amazing. You can break the glass but you aren't getting in very easily.

The lock is more for visual than being a sturdy lock bc they can be ripped off in like 5 seconds with a claw hammer or pry bar. Kinda same as having a entry door of a house with big window in it. If someone wants to break in, they don't care to damage your van panel or the window in entry door for example. A cheap personal protection device is a can of wasp spray as it works great as a pepper spray type use and most spray like 30 ft.

This is for any vanlifer that's miserable in the heat and lives in a dry climate. I bought a hessair evaporative cooler and it's just like an AC. It uses 70 watts. You need a maxxair to ventilate the humidity. It's big but worth every inch to me. I love vanlife but hate summer. It's 70 degrees in my van right now😃

@@TheBrandonn if you live in a climate with low humidity you should get one. With this heat wave it's so needed. Home Depot has them for $200. They go through a lot of water. I'm so happy I found it.

Tory, do you like dogs? It may sound dumb but I know that MANY times my dog has saved me simply by being seen and/or by barking. I know you plan on taking your cat with you, and having a dog makes things a little harder while traveling BUT if you get a young dog, raise the animals together they should be very good friends. You’ll never be lonely again, and even a small dog with a big bark is a lot of protection! I have a big dog now but the most viscous and protective dog that I ever had was a chihuahua! It chased grown men away, and even chased a Great Dane up the street!! Something to think on anyway. Most of the solitary female van-lifers I know, or follow have dogs.

From what I've been seeing by other people, you should also consider motion detection lights on ALL sides. Also, security cameras on all sides and a loud alarm you can activate manually to scare them off. Just my thoughts.

They have a safety/security film for windows, it's like window tint but clear, it would take awhile for someone to break through it.

It’s sad that we have to worry so much for our safety these days. I harken back to my childhood when we rarely even locked the doors to our house. I would see about getting a thicker “pin” for that rear door lock and also tethering it so if you drop it, it doesn’t get lost. Feel safe, Be safe Tory 🤗

What phone do you use? Just curious. Also, next time you drill right into a van, put tape over it, before you drill Applying tape to the area where you plan to drill can help prevent the drill bit from slipping and also reduce the risk of damaging the surface. It’s especially useful when drilling into smooth surfaces like a van’s metal body.

Use longer bolts and put a washer on the inside and nut totally strong then ,i will lock my doors with bolts on the inside when i am in but also when i go , all just come out one front door the rest will be bolted.

Tori, simple answer to your quandary: People are basically LAZY. If they see extra locks, they will usually just move on to an easier target. Also, better to use the bolts with nuts on the inside. Rivnuts throught a single layer often loosen and spin in the hole, making removal a big pain in the a$$.. secondly, invest in a drill stop. It would really suck if you drill through and hit wiring or a plumbing line. Better to remove that possibility completely. All that being said, I'm so glad you are building! Your attitude in this video is SO much more positive and happy!

Tory look at 3M window film. It goes on like tint and it makes it difficult to smash the window from the outside. It's designed to bid you enough time to gtfo of there it might be something worth looking into!

I agree with some of the others abouit installing a camera. It gives a way for you to see them without them seeing you. Also install a kill switch, it will be hidden and thiefs will not be able steal it unless they can find it. OBD port lookout also. At least 2 or 3 tracking devices with their own power source not from the van.

Where possible fit a steel backing plate on the inside of the body to reinforce the lock. The screws alone are'nt enough to securely hold the locks on during an attack, its only the threads holding it on. With backing plate it then becomes the entire panel holding the lock.

I've seen security bars (thin horizontal bars) that drop in brackets ten inches up from the bottom, for the driver/passenger door. If the window is shattered, they still can't crawl inside.

Check out Thunderbolt locks in Chicago area. I have them and they are great. Basically they install deadbolts on each door. They can even use your vechiles key fob . Check them out. They can't even be seen on the outside.

A $40 cordless grinder will slice thru that sheet metal in less than five minutes allowing the complete removal of the lock assembly. Yes it’s a bit noisy, but if a thief wants in they’ll figure out a way… Wouldn’t be worth the trouble for what you’ve hog in there now, but thieves stalk to see what you have prior to actually breaking in.

I'm a day late, but better late than never! Good to see you're looking relaxed, well nourished and rested! Nice locks -- and really nice locks on you too! Great & simple security solutions. I would also point you to the protective film that "the Vanderson's" had applied to their windows in Columbia -- no one's breaking through those. Pricey, but sure gives peace of mind. As far as people being able to see in through the rear, you can get louvres that attach (by suction cups) to the inside of the window -- some are even adjustable like window blinds. Just like a car, you don't want people to see that you have anything too valuable through the window. That part is important. The amount or kind of lock may make a difference. Depends on where you park probably on that one.

Well, the locks will slow down burglars, that’s a good thing. Still leaves the front doors. Two remarks about the installing: 1. Shouldn’t you have used an anti-corrosion stuff for you drillen holes? 2. The turning of the hex-key will go a lot easier without the keys in the lock

Agree about the dilemma with locks but there are much more discrete locks which look factory fitted but then do you want it be obvious. Decisions decisions. Fiat Ducato is the original manufacturer, ram pro, peugeot and Citroen are revranded versions.

I actually had my keys stolen and have put screws on the inside plastic lock slide to stop the unlock travel that would happen with a key. I leave them in all day except for the drivers door. I put that in at night. Just use a small drill to make the hole and most any screw should work. I also put a slide barrel bolt on the inside back door to lower frame to prevent them from opening. Looking into cameras too. Totally understand your experience with miserable jerks. 😊

Hi Tory. Great job, I see you love pink color, right? Which's why you have Allen Wrench (pink) tools. I suggest you may hookup the magnetic cameras (I believed, they came with 2 or 4 cameras including wireless monitor and solar light outdoor on the Amazon). So, in case, you can see someone at night. Most van life ladies, they carry something to defend themself. Such as a taser or pepper spray for safety. Have you thought about it?

When using an allen wrench use the long side so that you don't have to keep taking it out and in. Then use the short side at the end when you need the leverage to tighen it all the way down.

Add all the locks you want and they'll just break a window or go through the front. Locks are good but don't let them give you false comfort either. The biggest obstacle should be you. TRAIN and arm yourself. Then when locks fail and you can't get away you have the best chance of survival! Want to talk about training or practice when you're back in Vegas, let me know.

❤❤❤ hey Tory its Tony ummm you need nuts and bolts to secure any lock. That lock comes off with a hammer, if you only just screwed the lock in from the outside. One hit from a hammer.... Need to have nutts and bolts

Because of the location it would only be able to be rivnuts since you can’t reach behind the locks. Which I mentioned in the video about rivnuts for added strength! And the instructions on the lock include screws and suggest it, so I’m having faith they have tested their product. This lock would also be able to taken off probably in numerous other ways but so do most others. I like that they all include making lots of noise though and it would take extra time etc so instead of relying on one lock alone I like to have numerous security systems to build a good foundation :) Hope this helps share my thought process :)

@@ToryDelury If you could get behind the panel for a nut, use nyloc nuts. But since you can't the rivnut is many times stronger. The sheet metal screws can be pulled through easily if you don't care about damage - like a thief wouldn't. See how far open you can open the back door with the inside pin in place. I would hate for that pin to be able to be pushed out with a slightly open back door.

I just someone parked on my street that had a steering wheel lock bar, and another lock on the front wheel. Anyway, have you looked into an alarm like the guardian? I have seen several install videos on it. Also Ladi and Margret installed electronic locks inside the doors. Did you look into those? (A bit pricy)

Tory….. security is huge….. every night all of my doors are padlock shut from the inside….. I have a dog I have security cameras…. And other various weapons……. My neighbour had robbed his van. They simply cut off the roof and after robbery put it back. Other friend fpund empty van after someone just cut off window seal and removed window.

It's not an install. It's an installation. Install the locks. You were installing the locks. The locks were installed. Look at this installation of the locks. Let us know if the locks fail. I've seen large external enclosures on van doors that were designed to surround a padlock. Many of them seem to have been attacked so vigorously that the metal upon which they were mounted was twisted. Even if the thieves failed to get in, the doors were permanently damaged.

I honestly think I won’t know this until I live in it. If it was just me in the van I would do no windows for safety reasons. But my cat loves windows & I wanted her to love the space too so I did it for her & thought I could make some kind of reinforced window shutter type system like in a house but haven’t quite figured that out yet. If she doesn’t care about the windows in the end though I will definitely regret it haha. Over all though it does make the space seem bigger and I liked waking up seeing beautiful views without having to open the doors but whenever I think of security it’s just such a massive issue. So I still go back & forth :)

inside your van dont lock the slider rig up a latch or chain that all you need to do is pull the chain off the hook and if lock is unlocked outside thief could possibly lock it if hes picking it was a trick tenement renters used to have 3-4 locks plus chain on there door always left 1 unlocked at least they said that check a Byrna type non lethal .if you dont care for that get a good heave blade kitchen knife or a hunting knife the kitchen would be proper in your kitchen drawer but off road defiantly have a knife handy or the non lethal. unless you get permit to carry real one pa is good state to get one and north east states leave it home especially the criminal loving nj and ny . the glass film not too expensive just make sure if tinted its not too dark or just get clear uv blocker

Rivnuts require alot bigger hole but they are stronger. I would entertain the idea of replacing the black gasket with genuine UHB tape and screwing it back on. That UHB tape is really strong and super hard to remove or separate when applied to clean surfaces. That would eliminate the large holes drilled for the rivnuts. The sad part about doing youtube is you basically are advertising what all is in your van build and the bad guys watch RU-vid too! What ever you do as far as final security.....make sure you can get out reasonably quick in case of internal fire emergency. Have fun....God Bless....Stay Safe

Participate (with proper training) in 2nd amendment security. That helps a lot. Skip the lock, get a glock.

It's a nice extra layer of deterrent, but any lock pick kit and a couple of YT vids makes it useless. Probably will give you enough time to jump in the driver seat and getaway

Exactly, I really tried to highlight that in the video, But also to make someone see the lock & maybe pick a vehicle that looks easier to break into. Or to stop people from trying to open my back door because they can visually see it’s locked which is the incident that happened that incited me getting these locks in the first place 👍🏼

@@ToryDelury you DID highlight that! my biggest fear is someone parking a vehicle right in front so even if you're facing the right way out it's difficult to get away. i've seen people wake up to flat tires, not cool. really need some motion detectors at the corners of the van to alert you at night. design one for your next security themed post!
