Tripping in Brawl is the equivalent of Cross Assault in SFxT. It’s a dumb mechanic but it doesn’t really matter because you don’t run in that game.

The tripping mechanic sucks but i have heard from top players that most people are overrating on how annoying it actually was since it very rarely affected the outcome of a match, it sucked when it happened but yeah that stuff shouldn't even be a thing.

Tripping was honestly even worse than it seems at first glance because the SS tier character in that game, Metaknight never has to run because he can fly and glide across the screen and has five midair jumps, so it effectively buffs what is already the best character in the game. Goddamn, Brawl sucks.

the thing I'm most psyched for changewise is that they changed how stagger works to not be pointless mashing/stick wiggling -- now it just requires a single well timed input, which doesn't compromise the mechanic's value as an awareness check without having arbitrary extra mashing.

Unless they highlight this and emphasize what it is repeatedly in mission mode, people will hate this. Most fgc vets(not just gg vets) have been taught that when you get dizzied YOU MUST MASH. it's been an established solution to get out of dizzy state since sf2. I sincerely hope they emphasize this repeatedly.

Hated OS Throws. Throws having no whiff animation and can be paired with an additional option to hide behind is obnoxious and archaic. Throwing in every other modern fighting game is a committment. My only issue with throws in Strive is specifically Airthrows. These have landing recovery and more than every other normal or special in the game. Also, hated differing wakeup timings because some characters gained huge advantages for simply existing at a specific threshold. It added a lot of depth in MU knowledge, but if anything, it's an extremely unfriendly mechanic to casual playera and it's tough to appropriately pinpoint balancing when some setup do not work at all on part of the cast. I made the Dizzy oki chart. It was not fun having to research every single character's wakeup timings against every single type of oki option available (including spacing), and determine what everyone's escape options are.

@@LordKnightfgc Different setplay is good and fun, but not all setplay is built evenly with it in mind. For instance, Dizzy strictly can't set up H Fish against I-No, Sol, and Ky because they can jump FD clean to shrink their hitbox and dodge the laser on wakeup. Also, P Fish and K Fish work on extremely different spacing rules as well as per character because the different spacing creates different travel time, which makes you need specific combo routes on each character to make certain oki possible. Meanwhile Ky can setup the exact same oki on everyone because the move starts up and stays active early enough and throughout the entire mixup. And then there's prenerf Raven orb oki. Not to say Dizzy's mixup and oki is bad (it's quite scary), but it's way more complicated that it hurts the barrier of entry for more players, which is one of the core design philosophies for Strive (which I feel maybe is swinging a bit hard on that philosophy). However a different game already exists that solves that situation with a deeper and more engaging wakeup system. I come from Blazblue like you and I love that system. I much prefer being able to control my wakeup as opposed to being given 2 set duration that my opponent controls. You give everyone different risks and rewards for different tech options, and when you have an oki option way too powerful (Kokonoe's black hole), the dev team can easily identify it and balance it accordingly.

@@LordKnightfgc I like it too, but I'm fine with it not being a thing. I enjoy the character dependency on wakeup, combos, all that in XX, but don't think it's a terrible choice that they're making some of that more universal.

I'll miss projectile YRC in the sense that it's an easy 25 meter option you can default to when you're learning the game. Either you get a neutral assist, a free setup or a pressure extension, so it's everything fun about GG on a casual level. Also, fuck those mashy mechanics. Mashing to tech and mashing on stagger feel like shit, and the post-tech situation makes it so much worse.

I enjoyed baiting techs with air grabs, but yeah that mechanic had more negatives than positives. Also staggers literally only had negatives, I'm glad they're gone.

Lol LK, I never thought about it but you're so right about the air tech invincibility. When I play Kum I mash HS when I'm being comboed, against most players if they accidentally drop, my j.HS always punishes them hard. I realized I've relied on this crutch for so long and it is scrubby, I just always mash. The only times I don't is when I play characters with resets like I-No's anti air throw. LK what do you think about the changes to throws? One thing I thought was pretty devilish and hard for players to get used to is how powerful wakeup throw was. I thought this was also kind of like a quirk about Xrd. Also I won't miss having to FD break in order to throw, or how a whiffed throw becomes a HS.

Fighting Axl in Xrd is always so funny because you just air-tech forward + p and it they can do very little about it if they try to catch you in the air. Axl just loses pressure sometimes cause you just mash p when he hits you. Xrd's tech system is pretty good overall, its one of my favorites, but the prevalence of the invincibility is actually insane.

I like danger time, I feel like it doesn't change the results of matches too much and from my time playing with more casual players, the two mechanics that actually stood out to them as being really fun were the instakills and danger time, and now the game has neither so I feel like there wouldn't have been as immediate of a fun time for newer players, and there's a much lower chance that anything interesting will happen for newer players off the get-go. Though I do agree that the RC system is probably better now.

@@hil449 If you don’t cater to casuals to some degree, you don’t get the sales needed to support the game. Strive is doing better because it’s more casual friendly, but having things like that certainly wouldn’t hurt it. Calling them “party game mechanics” is fair to a degree, in the same way insta kills in older titles were or AH in BB are. Yet people don’t seem to complain about those for some reason…

Good points. I'm also happy these things are gone. I never played a lot of Xrd, only here and there casually with friends, and I didn't get into it as much due to some of these things. I actually never even knew about the tech buttons invincibility thing, that's interesting and I see why it's gone. Hellfire was another thing I disliked, it didn't do TOO much, but it's still something that I disliked as an idea.

the slow on counter hit is a much better mechanic than danger time. so much time to hit confirm into totsugeki, and if they do try to mash on you when they recover, that invincibility is gone so you just counter hit and totsugeki again

I really prefer the zoomed out camera in games like xrd. The camera in Strive is really zoomed in and makes it feel kinda claustrophobic. Just personal preference though really.

I wasn't even aware of the air tech invulnerability, I usually played characters that ended their combos in a KD, so it felt like it rarely came up. As for mechanics from other games, what would you think about force breaks being added back in?

actually in strive when they are in wall splat state its there. They can tech forward or down or up only on wall splat. so technically not gone. yikes

regarding airtech buttons- while it can be annoying at times, I find that being able to airthrow the opponent when he tries to airtech -> buttons leads to some interesting mindgames (only sometimes comes up, but I still think it makes the airtech situation interesting when the level of play is high enough that this matters)

That still happens in Dragon Ball for instance, but in Xrd you can be punished for hitting an opponent in the air, or even having the opponent stealing your turn.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Danger Time was trash, and anyone who defends it is actually dumb. RNG mechanic that skews the risk-reward scale to a ridiculous degree? Are you serious? Just think about any time you get hit by a stray button, whether it's 2P, a max range f.S, an airdash back j.H, a rising j.P. Now think about how many times players are able to confirm off of that lone single stray hit into an optimal or even regular bnb combo. Now give players anywhere between 2-10 seconds to confirm off that stray hit due to the added hitstun and ability to OS into a confirm from any situation due to how "Mortal Counter" works (also a trash mechanic by association). NOW give those combos added damage for the entire duration of Danger Time because why not. NOW imagine that person is playing Elphelt, or Sin, or Johnny. NOW let's make that mechanic uncontrollable and unpredictable. You can force a clash in some setups, especially with Oki, but you can't force DT.

Danger time I think was a 1/6 chance on specifically a same button clash or something similar to that. The rules that made it occur was that way so it would occur less, but yeah it was still lame.

I’m gonna be honest, as of recent. I just been thinking, the FGC is killing fightings games. I might make a video on this but I’m gonna be real. These good high quality fighting games drop, get a bit of traction, then die. unless you carrying the title of mortal kombat, street fighter, tekken, or injustice. Fighting games take a hell of a blow to the nuts when it comes to success. I think the fgc needs to chill tf out on preferences in games. I thought of this when at the beginning of this video, you were against danger time. It’s not even that I care about the mechanic but the purpose or motive of it is to give the game a sense of identity. Like how you buy a mortal kombat game expecting the fatalities and gore. Fighting games in my honest opinion deserve so much more love and care and I don’t think it’ll happen because developers don’t wanna lose the fgc (their main source of income) by trying ambitious new things. Idk if the fgc is aware of how much they are stabbing themselves in the foot but the level of how much the fgc likes their games to be played safe so it doesn’t pop their safe bubble really holds back fighting games as a genre. You’ll never hear about a fighting game being held up as one of the best games of all time and that makes me kinda sad. After playing Absolver, I see the potential that’s there but the fgc is quite honestly holding fighting games success at gun point. Maybe this comment will ruffle some feathers but it needs to be said. Feelings are irrelevant.

I can see where you're coming from but some of these mechanics just end up being unfun, if the devs add some crazy mechanic that makes the game insane and cool then all the power to them, but shit like danger time becomes incredibly unfun due to its random nature. It feels like at times some random bullshit happened rather than some cool mechanic that enhances gameplay. I'm not against crazy cool mechanics that enhance gameplay, but there are just some ideas that just aren't fun and the game might be better off without it.

I don't think the blame falls squarely on the players in the FGC, but also the unconscious influence of the "spectator" aspect too that's pushing devs towards making mechanics/ games that are fun to watch, but don't always end up being fun to play. I.e. Danger time. Incredibly hype to watch it happen, but not every player enjoys the mechanic when it happens.

I agree with pretty much all your points here, specially YRC. The YRC mechanic of Xrd is what mostly kept me away from playing it more over AC+R. I still played it but man I'd get so tilted at the full screen slowdowns at times.

Hate the fact YRC would eat your opponent's inputs. God that's so infuriating on the receiving end. Also, Purple RC was unneeded. I think they should of increased the cost of yellow RC to a flat 33% or 50% and eliminated some of the BS it did so it wasn't such a free option. Ground recovery options like delayed wake up and tech rolling forward or back similar to BlazBlue would have been nice. Some stuff is just murder in specific situations and you need an out or a way to throw off an opponent's Oki. But yeah...Danger Time: complete garbage mechanic. It won't be missed.

Opinions on stun in GG? imo it feels like something that was thrown into early GGs because SF2 had a stun mechanic that just gets you a free IK (at least in AC+R idk shit about xrd) and gives characters like slayer and may especially the option to just win the round for playing half of it. It's not that it's not hype, it just feels kinda half assed.

Feels like there are a lot of legacy mechanics in GG like that, which were implemented for poor reasoning, or to 'fix' issues, and they just kinda remained in the game because 'they are guilty gear', even though they are pretty bad. Aka, guts, wakeup timings, character weight, stuns, mash tech, defense ratings, etc. Sadly, even though they are bad mechanics, a lot of the community will defend them because, again, these mechanics 'are guilty gear'.

I like Stun in GG cause it gets high health and aggressive characters to be more careful with there approach because if they eat too many hits even if they don't lead into combos, they could lose the game very easily, it's not something that happens all too much when ur opponent is adapting to ur playstyle, also it just feels really satisfying to stun an opponent and get an IK

@@HellecticMojo In any game with health, defense, etc., it eventually just becomes a math equation that equals 'Effective health' a character has. Defense and guts just obscure visual clarity in the game for the sake of creating hype moments. Guts was designed to create more moments where both players are on a pixel of health, instead of letting it happen organically. It's an artificial hype mechanic. Sure, other games have defense rating systems, but for the most part, *most* fighting games just operate on a health system where some characters have more or less health. Now, there is an actual aspect to the guts/defense system in GG that creates 'more depth', but it has nothing to do with balancing aggressive characters. It creates situations where certain combo routes become less effective than others because of number of hits scaling down the maximum damage of attacks. Some people argue this creates more depth and flavor, but for the most part, it's just more artificial depth added to the game that creates higher barrier to entry, and becomes a memory game more than an actual test of skill for player interactions.

Damn, I'm surprised you didn't talk about throw YRC OS with the YRC part... this was so annoying, throws being already insanely powerful and being able to make the throw attempt perfectly safe... I'm glad they took it out of the game aswell, though I'm waiting to see how the meta evolve around the new RC system, maybe we'll see some dumb shit too (most likely tbh :D) About the different wake up speed, I don't agree entirely. Like, I understand why they are in the game for some part, but I really don't see this as expression of the individuality of the characters. For example, Kum's wake up speed doesn't make any sense whatsoever. It's just something that we have to know, and we have to know how to use this knowledge in the match up, but I don't like it too much (even though I play chipp so I have a super annoying late wake up)

I'm not saying the wake up speeds aid in player expression, I mean that it is another aspect that makes the chars different and unique. I do understand it is a kind of arbitrary barrier for new people so I don't really mind that it's gone, I just like small details like that. You also have to plan around it and can potentially build some situations with it, which is cool.

wym? Strive is permanently in Danger Time, also tech buttons can be fixed in other ways than forcing everyone to the ground the moment you touch them in the air. Also different wakeup timings was annoying to characters that didn't have a designated "oki ball" or alot of active frames to hit them meaty. It encouraged scrub mashing on wakeup too, cause it was too hard for alot of players to lab out.

LK typically defines neutral as the part where no character is directly attacking the other. Trying to define it by "advantage" gets weird. Just ask the Enkidu players about the myth of "neutral" against Yuzuriha.

I don't agree about the 2nd one. It was perfect for players like you who only want to play zoners or characters who just sit in the corner of the screen. So Stun Edge into cancel was a perfect way to actually challenge your brain and make you work for your neutral. Also being able to wake up and mash any time is scrubby. It's why I am glad the FighterZ era is gone and I don't want them to bring it back. It created so many false fighting game players who thrives on the low skill and plus on mash meta FighterZ is. That game gave players on defense more tools to counter the person on offense. It punished you for being offensive or just engaging in general. In most games being in the corner on the ground is the worse place ever, but in FighterZ it's the perfect ever. Wake Reflect, Mash, Air Tech mash, run out of the corner, DP, assist and etc. It was just too much going on in that scenario that made it scrubby. If you knock someone on the ground they literally put the person on Offense in a 50/50 lol.

I actually like the different wake up times aswell, it gives you more room for specific match up knowledge stuff, rewarding you for doing your homework, instead of "this works for every character" , learn 1 setup and you're good. I understand too why it's out of the game, it's a pain to go practice all kinds of specific stuff against every character on their different wake up times but once you learn it's very satisfying

Think of it like an opportunity to get rid of your opponents burst an to do massive damage. We're playing Guilty gear a proper counter hit combo after cranking risc does more damage than danger time..... Get counter hit by Sol 6H or CH 6P. People just panic, get hit an blame it on danger time. We all love the mechanic when we aren't the one getting hit during it. How is it not good competitively. Both competitors know about the mechanic an go in knowing Danger time combos specifically for the situation. A lot of people have a bad mentality about danger time possible cause they were blown up by it the first time it ever popped up an ever since then they thought it was bad. I play Sol so it's normal for me to chase down my opponent an Sin so im used to doing a ton of damage for basically little effort so Danger time is fun to me. I get to murder people in less time than it normally would take. I taught my friend Guilty Gear an I ended up bodying him when danger time came up while explaining it to him. While he was hitting me he felt amazing but when I got a CH 6H into Bandit Bringer he said "Man, I see why people hate this mechanic" He said it cause he was salty he got hit. An now every time it comes up he mentally gives up an just tries to out run the timer. It's the wrong mind set. He's ingrained it in his mind when he sees that timer that he is going to get hit an lose when he's playing Sin Vs Sol. All he would need to do is Beak Driver, Bull Bash, or Elk hunt preemptively to stop my BLIND approach an hit me but he's alright mentally given up. So knowing that I just blindly run around like sol with a time bomb stuck to my chest trying to wild throw the dude for fun. What I'm saying is dont look at Danger time with a preconceived notion that your gonna get bodied instead think of it as a time to fight for your life, make a few dumb gambles etc. For competitive play you get 3 seconds to decide what you want to do. If you can YRC an make quick decisions then Danger times count down clock is a test in Yomi. I don't think what I am going to do when the countdown starts I think what will my opponent do.... "Oh I'm playing sol an I've Dp'd a few times so they think I'm going to DP" so I gamble on a Ground Viper an hope they don't mash, DP, or Run up wild throw. If I chose wrong an they block an counter.....shit I gotta hold that. It's bad for competitive say that to a slayer player who gets you in a combo an finishes with his Burst super, or a Sin who hit you with Far S Beakdriver Rc while you have no burst. The game is filled with situations that cause you to lose over 50% of your life. Danger time is just a rare scenario that can lead to even more damage. "It's bad for competitive play" Makes it sound like the person who wins cause of danger time doesn't deserve the W. They are top class professional players their combos do massive amounts of damage danger time or not. It's a fun mechanic that adds a layer of anxiety into the already high octane game of ground based footsies we know. Kekw

Every time it activates it outright takes infinitely less effort and skill to win the game at that point. It might as well make all attacks instakill due to how easy it is to win once you so much as graze your opponent. Boiling everything down to one interaction sucks for the player that has the life lead. In a situation in which one player isn't 1% and the other at 100% danger time makes it possible for the 1% player to just win by touching the opponent once. If danger time hadn't activated they would have to have touched the opponent multiple times just like they did in order to make a comeback. To your point of many things doing over 50%. Remember that guts is a mechanic in guilty gear. The health bar isn't an accurate display of your actual health %. Doing the same 50% combo on someone with 40% and 100% health on their bar won't do the same amount of damage. It is bad for competitive play because it ignores whatever the situation is, it ignores health the characters have. As I said before 1% and 100% are almost the same thing in it. It is hype, it is exciting, for the viewers. The person who hits first doesn't inherently deserve to actually win the match. It's a shit mechanic that lets both the worse or better player win.

Probably as Sony is the main sponsor of Evo now, and Sony having lot of money invested in Strive (console exclusivity, exclusive skins etc), ArcSys _had_ to release Strive at least 2 months before Evo. Which lead to content not making it in time: IKs, combo missions etc

I think I could follow up a couple things. YRC does eat inputs but people found you can just repeat the input again so you'll get it. Things like burst and DAA won't come out until after the slow down though.

@@LordKnightfgc The issue wasn't that there wasn't a counter to it, it's that it is the most jarring element to exist in a fighting game series known to pride itself on tight and fast controls. It makes the game feel and play like garbage when it happens, and I was never capable of getting used it.
