Please join Steve Westman as he reviews The Replacement’s Tim Let it Bleed remix, Gillian Welch’s The Harrow and The Harvest and Morphine’s Cure For Pain. These albums are should be all must have in everyone’s collection. Enjoy!!
Morphine, one of my favorite bands ever. Being a Boston based band, I was fortunate to see a lot of their earlier shows, and their sax player, Dana, played on one of my old band’s records. ROG and MOV also released “Cure for Pain”. Their albums, “Like Swimming” and “The Night” were just released on vinyl by LITA and sound fantastic. The whole catalog is finally on vinyl. I could go on and on about them, but I’ll spare you, and only say they’re one of the few bands I’ve got the entire discography of on vinyl plus a few CD’s. Thanks, Steve.
If Gillian Welch can manage to get Revival and Time(The Revelator) pressed, it will sell out very quickly. Many of us have been waiting for years for that miraculous day.
Good to see you getting off the well beaten standard vinyl path. Follow Mazzy’s great example of looking/listening beyond everyone’s MOR albums. Thank you
Gillian Welch has been on my list for a while. Hoping for a repress at some point. Morphine is in the mail 😉 and I definitely need to investigate The Replacement. I’ve heard some of their music but don’t actually own any. Thanks for highlighting some great and lesser known music. 👍🏻
Morphine frigg'n *ROX* Bro! 🤟What is interesting is that I had the Light in the Attic single LP release of Cure for Pain, and I went to your online Canadian store Beat Street Records I think it's called and I was looking for the hard to find 2-LP 'Good' release from them. Well, they had it listed, it was the ONLY dang place that had it, so I immediately ordered it. Well, they ended up sending me Cure for Pain 😕 And, I thought CRAP, that sux... BUT... get this... they sent me the newer 2-LP Run Out Groove release which I didn't even KNOW it was a 2-LP release until I finally got around to opening it, because I wasn't really in a hurry to do so, and DAMN there were 2 LPs in there! And, guess what... That Run Out Groove 2-LP pressing blew the single one out of the frigg'n *STRATOSPHERE!!!* I could not bloody believe it because the single release, the one you showed actually sounds pretty dang good! But Bro, I'm tellin' you, *WOW!* I mean like double the dynamics and punch and everything! So, I was like what a great accidental surprise, that Run Out Groove is easily one of THE damn best sounding albums I have, and I have over 2500. Absolutely stunning! WOW again!
Great Video Steve! I agree with your picks but I’m not super-familiar with the Replacements. I need to gram that Morphine LP my wife is a huge fan. Got love balls out Rock and Roll with zero guitar!
Gillian Welch is awesome. And Dave Rawlins is a crazy good guitarist. I got to meet Gillian before she was famous. Cant speak highly enough of the two. Id call their music Americana. They were suppose to release the first three Gillian Welch albums on vinyl, but still nothing. I know there was a flood, so I am afraid to think that the masters were damaged or lost. Hopefully not. That Tim is awesome. Remix of the year. Morphine is a band I just got turned on to by a friend in the VC. Great stuff. All very good picks Steve 👍🏻
I first saw both Welch and Morphine in 1993, a fan ever since. Cure for Pain was first on LP by LITA, pretty good pressing despite what some detractors say, then some off labels, and most recently a deluxe ROG package. I did a Sandman obit for an mag I was writing for, extremely sad. Bill Conway anlso recently passed away, he was Jeffrey Foucault’s drummer for a long time, great. All may be OOP now. Welch and Rawlings LPs pressed at QRP, Chad loves them, but they have now switched to VMP, waiting for the VMP plant to open, which is way overdue. I was expecting Time to be out this year, but it does not look promising.
