So, most people in the comments, along with both Steve and I, voted in this order: B, A, and C. Here is the REVEAL: " A" was Ryan K. Smith/Sterling Sound AP 45, "B "was Miles Showell, Abbey Road half-speed master, and "C "was other original US promo LP cut by Tim Young. Thanks everyone for participating!
*Brian Needle Meets Vinyl* just said it's high time *The Beatles EP* box set was reissued, & predicts its re-release soon. I watched Brian show the original 1981 box set, then checked the going price for it, & when I picked myself up off the floor I agreed: it's high time!
A little anecdote about the Beatles Mono Box. A year before the box came out Sean Magee became a member of the Steve Hoffman Forum. Of course he was inundated with questions about any possibilities of all analog reissues of the Beatles in mono. He said that it was unequivocally impossible for the Beatles to have an all analog reissue of their albums in mono. So I asked him if the tapes still existed and in usable condition. He said yes they were. And so I said it is "possible" but perhaps it's extremely unlikely. We argued back and forth over whether or not it was actually "POSSIBLE" and Sean got pissed off at me and left the forum. Then Steve and a few others got pissed off at me for chasing him away. And then a year later (I think it was about a year) We got the box set. I was right.... ;-)
Why wouldn’t Abbey Road work at 45 rpm? I realize “the long one” has “you never give me your money” on the front end, but I’ve always thought the length of “yngmym” when compared to “sun king” and subsequent songs makes it a stand alone song. I think a side break between “yngmym” and “sun king” would work well. Just my two cents. Thanks for the good work on the roundtables.
Are we really back to complaining about 45rpm? Does AP sometimes choose to do audiophile reissues at 45rpm? Yes. But many times it is their ONLY option as a way to get the rights to do a reissue. Both the Steely Dan and Atlantic 75th campaigns had 33rpm reissues coming from the parent label. The ONLY way AP was gonna get to do those titles was at 45rpm! Would we really rather not get them at all? Or be stuck with the average to crappy masterings from the parent label at 33rpm? I would not!
IMO George Borden makes some important points here about how and under what conditions most of us listen to music in our day to day lives. I no longer buy UHQRs or One Steps because I can't justify the price (admittedly I'll have difficulty resisting the AP 'Royal Scam' when it's released, but at the end of the day I can live with my '70s Japanese pressing and SHM CD just fine). I've been seeking out quiet pressings since about '73, but I no longer care one way or the other about premium vinyl except in rare cases, and 45 rpm is just plain stupid for all but the most classic albums (the UHQR Kind of Blue comes to mind). I like the Rhino Hi Fi titles I have so far, but I'm being selective about what I buy.
It's a personal thing and we all have to do what is best for ourselves. These shows are all about just saying what is out there and available, with a slant on quality. Thanks for your comment and for being involved. It is appreciated.
For the Inxs - Kick album I have the Atlantic 75th 33 rpm clear vinyl version which I think sounds great but cannot seem to find out who cut it. There isn’t anything in the dead wax and there isn’t any info in Discogs
My experience with the AP 45 Bill Evans Riverside box was bad. I had 4 badly warped discs, I had 5 discs that had severe scratches and 3 discs that had very bad non-fill. All separate discs! I did not feel like playing Chad 'roulette' of getting replacements, then getting replacements for replacements etc. so I returned the whole box for a refund. My experience over the past 3 years with RTI pressings has been poor, especially the last 2 years since Rick Hashimoto (RTI Manager/Master Presser) left RTI to help design/build the Fidelity Record Pressing plant which he Manages, with two of his sons. I have had very bad luck with AP releases pressed at RTI... I would say about 30% of the albums needs a replacement disc. I went thru many replacements with the RTI pressed AP 45rpm Roger Waters Amused to Death and never got copies without audible defects.
Here are my results: A: Good detail and sound stage. Not exactly how I remember this record sounding so my assumption is it is one of the reissues. Seemed to lack a bit of the driving snap the original pressing had. B: The vertical sound stage narrowed for this one. Mix seemed to punch in a straight line in the middle of the mix. This pressing sounds like what I remember this redoing sounding like. Lots of snap and energy. Not as detailed as the prior mix. If I had to guess this is the original LP. C: This sounds more similar to pressing A. Very detailed. I was able to glean some elements in the recording I’ve never heard before. I very much appreciate much enjoyed this pressing. Only because it was interesting. But it lacked the drive and energy of the original mix. I think because of the bias I have for the original mix I prefer B. While not as detailed it conveyed the feel and intent of the song. That said, it is interesting to hear how different mastering and pressings can influence the presentation of a song.
It is the price of the players that has killed the format. I had 3 affordable Sony DVP NS755's (1993) that stopped playing the SACD layers. My Yamaha S1890 from 1997 is still going strong. Maybe you can talk to them about stopping the practice of converting film sound to MP3 quality. I have no DVDs that are more then 448 kbps pcm. 1411 should be the lowest, CD quality.
I got this Bad Co Friday. Sounds great. But Definitely not as impressive as the previous Rhino HiFi releases. I was surprised to be underwhelmed, tbh. I have the Rocktober release from last year and there is no real discernible difference. Highs are a bit crisper on the Rocktober pressing. Still happy to have this. And it trounces the OG for sure, though thats not saying much. I didn’t want to get the Analogue Productions 45 rpm for an album with only 8 tracks. So I’m glad this came out. Thanks for the video
Sir Steve great VID. I have a 2017 remaster version of KICK, on clear 180g vinyl manufactured in Czech Republic. It had an Atlantic original 75 hype sticker. Not sure who remastered the 2017 versions.
steve - from info from Co-pilot Microsoft search: The 2023 reissue of INXS’s “Kick” on clear vinyl (RCD1 81796) was mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios1. Showell is known for his expertise in half-speed mastering, which enhances the audio quality and fidelity of vinyl records.
I’m a sucker for Yes reissues, but I’m a little confused about a high fidelity Relayer. I’ve always considered that recording to be not up to par, and I assumed it was the way it was recorded, using their live board for tracking in Squires untested home studio. The Steve Wilson remix fixed some of the issues, but the mid frequency cluster of poor sound still stacks up once all the instruments come in. I’m aware that I’m in the minority of opinion on this. If Rhino managed to get high fidelity out of that original master tape (copy, whatever) I will gladly fork over my $. That will be fantastic news!
How many unreleased songs will be there including outtakes, demos, alternate takes, studio jam sessions, etc and even b side too. That were unreleased and there were different pressings for Havana daydreamin and there are over 500 thousand unreleased songs from universal studios Hollywood fire 🔥 2008 16 years ago. And when will the lawsuit will happen and what year will the lawsuit happen this year next year etc?
I have an original Australian pressing and it's almost unlistenable, it sounds compressed and just hideous. I have the 75 Atlantic and it smokes it. To be fair its not the best production, it's good but not great and there is only so much they can do without making it worse like so many do. I have an original Listen Like Thieves and the production is brilliant.
Heh, just checked the 3 samples, took me about 30 seconds on my SECONDARY system, which is no great shakes. Eliminated 'C' immediately as far weaker than the others. 'A' is pretty clear, I'm thinking the Rhino. And 'B' *OBVIOUSLY* had way more punch, so going by what our fellow said above, I'm guessing that must be the Abbey Road. If so, then yes, it is by FAR much more punchy. Again, only took me about 30 seconds.. Of course, if I'm wrong... DOO DOO Face time! 😁
Probably completely wrong. A- Atlantic 45. B- Miles Showell's Abbey Road 45. C-OG 1987.Now the one I am using to hearing for the last 37 years??? was the UK OG, but I believe the US 87, and UK 87 are cut from same source? But to my clapped out ears, this is what I think. B-the dynamics are too OTT for me.Tim;'s riff too heavy, and loud for the rest of the mix, as is Garry's bass. Even Michael's vocals must have been up in the red for me, when recording this to disc?To my ear not much difference between C and A. Both sound superb, and all levels that I am use to hearing with these tracks.C maybe slightly noisier as the track fades out? But you would find that with an OG 87??? Anyway like I stated, probably completely wrong!!
I just got my order. The packaging was state of the art. You could toss this package around like a Frisby and the records would be undamaged. And of course my records were completely unblemished. They have fixed the problem
When I knew the AP 75 was coming out, I took my US original out and listened to it for the first time in many years. I thought, DAMN this sounds great! Then, people are raving about the AP 75, so I took it out again just the other day to give it another listen, and yeah, honestly, it sound perfectly fine to me, I mean REALLY good! And, it your friend there is right, if Tim Young did it in the UK and that's what I'm hearing, I am NOT surprised because he is one of the VERY best mastering engineers who is very highly praised. So, yep, original too for me 😊
Third one from Rhino and all three have arrived with inner sleeve seam splits and corner damage! I will pay extra for better shipping containers! Call Chad and ask him where he gets his packaging from……oh btw it sounds great!
As an Aussie I’m so happy they included INXS. Love to see Listen Like Theives and The Swing in the background, one of my favourites was Shaboo Shoobah ❤ waiting for my copy to arrive in the next couple of days, can’t wait to spin it!
Completely agree with you on the numbered copies. Although, I do enjoy getting a numbered copy when I get my AP order in. To your point on the randomness of the numbers, I received my AP Kick the day this video aired and it was #1656.
Fyi: Tim Young is a very highly regarded mastering engineer in the UK with an impressive discography including London Calling, The Pretenders, Elvis Costello etc. he became the first non-American engineer to win a Grammy, for his work on the Beatles "Love". He often signs off as TimTom
As a huge fan of this record, this was my most anticipated release for the AP Atlantic 75. I love the $1 thrift store copy I have and I thought RKS was going to give me maximum aural pleasure, resulting in an eargasm. Alas, this is the first Atlantic 75 that has been just ok. I expected it to blow me away at first listen, but I’m two spins in and it has not lived up to my probably-too-high expectations. It’s a solid, dead quiet pressing, but something is missing. My thrift store copy is just fuller and more dynamic. Chad and RKS are analog gods, but the KICK analOG reigns supreme for me.
After many back and forths, I am fairly certain that C is the original pressing. A and B are both more detailed, less muddied in the complex, layered moments of the 1st track. B seems to be cut a bit hotter than A, which tends to benefit it at times and be a detriment at others. My ears and brain lean towards the B pressing as the overall best. It does the best job with both the subtle 2nd/3rd layer musical elements as well as the left/right channel overdubbed vocals, harmonies, etc.
Turntable was a freshly recapped and Krebs uprgaded Technics SP-10MKII, VPI JMW-10 tonearm, Ortofon Cadenza Black cartridge (upgraded from Shibata to Microridge by VAS Audio), Musical Surroundings Phonomena II+ and Linear Power Supply into VTL 5.5 preamp, out to Tascam SD-20M rack mount digital recorder at 96/24.
I have the original US release of “Sgt. Pepper” on Capitol, and it was the original 1967 album, and it’s a stereo edition. The sound quality on the US release was pretty darn good compared to the UK counterpart.
In music, an outtake is a recording that is not included in the final version of a album, single, or other release. Outtakes can be: 1. Unfinished songs: Tracks that were not completed or finalized. 2. Alternative versions: Different versions of songs that were ultimately not used. 3. Rejected songs: Tracks that were recorded but not deemed suitable for release. 4. Studio jam sessions: Improvisational recordings not intended for official release. 5. Demo recordings: Early versions of songs that were later re-recorded. Outtakes can provide valuable insight into an artist's creative process and are often sought after by fans and collectors. They can be released later as bonus tracks, on compilation albums, or as part of anniversary editions. How many songs that has been reused from the fire from universal studios Hollywood and finally survived and now properly working again? And I wonder how many outtakes and unreleased recordings Jimmy had over the years including hot water and floridays and even volcano 🌋?
@@stevewestman7774 I even heard that Havana daydreamin had different pressings and artwork and different alternate takes and including Havana daydreamin too.
So, they really weren't a brand new band. Paul and Simon were in Free together first, and Free was a hit band. If not for the loss of their guitar player, Bad Company may never have happened.
The website states that it’s AAA cut from “the master tapes” but in the video, Patrick states that it’s taken from a 1st gen “copy”. It would be nice to have this clarified/confirmed.
🥱 Yawn! If I were managing Rhino HiFi, I would try to ensure that all 5K copies would sell out in a couple days. I would ensure that folks would be lined up and waiting to push the buy button on every release day. I bet a ton of people are in the queue and ready then just go back to sleep like I did. 😴
