Comparing mechanical watches to quartz is like comparing steam locomotives to diesel or electric. Sure, there's more romance in steam, but the new technology is waaaay more performant, reliable and efficient. Also, we taught a rock to keep time. How cool is that?
@PopBubbleWrappable
@PopBubbleWrappable 5 лет назад
"We taught a rock to keep time." That's a beautifully poetic way to describe quartz, although I'd prefer to describe it as a rock that already knew how to keep time, but man simply discovered its ability; something formed in the cosmos juxtaposed with a human construct.

Michael In years past I really wanted to believe that mechanicals were better. I really did! I now have a good friend who is a watchmaker/repair/service man and a flight instructor. He says that even a Rolex needs to be gone over about every 15 years. Don’t know what your experience is, but The aforementioned gentleman has worked on a few thousand time pieces. I do enjoy a good mechanical piece but cannot stack it up against quartz accuracy with occasional battery changes. Having said that, I’m curious to know what you wear because I am a watch nerd! Thanks for your time.

Sadly, these limited edition Eco-Drive watches cost $16,800 or $7,400, based on case material. (Looking forward when the Citizen 'Caliber 0100' is used in more affordable watches.) /watch?v=iigxOiIvFGY Rather amazing that the Omega Megaquartz 2.4 MHz watches (from the mid-1970s) had accuracy of ±1 second per month. Yet, the Citizen '4.1 MHz Crystron Megaquartz' (from 1975) claimed ±3 second per year accuracy (but only had 6 month battery life).

A lot of the electrics that predate quartz are extremely interesting, I have a modest collection of timex electrics one being the exact model worn by Dexter on his eponymous series my favorites are the Dynabeat models that are every bit a smooth sweeping as the majority of mechanicals today. Hamilton also has quite a few electrics which I plan to start collecting, it’s amazing when you are holding one and think about how far that technology predates quartz. Seiko’s “twin quartz” movements are quite interesting as well, and I can’t believe you didn’t mention spring drive.

Oh it's a special battery that is so very different from the normal 1.5v, not. Because they can but shouldn't. Agree, ridiculous cost 👍
@a0r0a7
@a0r0a7 4 года назад
@MotoPaisano all quartz watches use 1.5v silver oxide as the norm. There are a few exceptions from earlier days and some modern era watches use lithium. However, if you put a meter across a new silver oxide 1.5v watch battery of which there are many variations in shape and size you will usually get a reading of 1.55 to 1.6v. The cost involved is not that great for the physical battery. There are many high street retailers who will look at the make of watch and put a premium on the cost. As an experiment I went into one retailer and asked how much to change my battery in my Omega seamaster quartz, £95. I have since been told this retailer now uses the 10% rule. So if your quartz watch is £1800 then expect £180 for a battery change. I am also aware they buy batteries in such bulk that they are making ridiculous profit on battery replacement.
@a0r0a7
@a0r0a7 4 года назад
@MotoPaisano well done. You can see with the right tools changing a battery does not warrant the ridiculous cost charged by some. Mechanical watches are different, fully stripping and cleaning then assembly requires time and skill. Also you have to build in protection cost in the service fee. If something breaks in your hands during a service a big bill for a Swiss part is guaranteed.

I applaud your review of some high end quartz watches here. I am really happy to see proper quartz watches receiving due attention on this very good RU-vid channel. I own a Rolex Oysterquartz as well as the Omega X1 (gen2) and have enjoyed wearing them very much. Although the Breitling Emergency has never appealed to me, I do own the legendary Breitling B-1 superquartz. These are great watches with really very accurate movements, the B-1 boasting the most accurate caliber (A78362) which loses about 12 seconds a year. But I was a bit disappointing that you didn't mention any of the (much better) high end Japanese quartz watches. But here I suspect there is very strong bias towards the Swiss brands in this channel, consigning Japanese watches to the cheap and cheerful bin. So here I shall break a lance for them, for I am convinced that none of these quartz watches mentioned in this video can hold a candle to the Citizen The Citizen Chronomaster CTQ57-0961. Even though the fit and finish of this watch is on par with any Swiss counterpart, and it may not have the bells and whistles of the Breitling and Omega (and let me state that bells and whistles a quartz watch does not define), it is the caliber that makes this watch truly amazing. Although Citizen guarantees 5 seconds of loss a year, I discovered after wearing one for a year and a half without interruption, that it lost only 2,5 seconds. And all this is accompanied by stellar build quality, durability and service (10 years of free service including battery replacements). This is one of my favorite watches to date, wearing very comfortably and literally never missing a beat. Although Grand Seiko quartz watches are also a very, very good HEQ (and perhaps even nicer to look at), it just isn't as good as this wonderful Citizen.... But more about Grand Seiko in another comment.

Mechanical is about people's emotions, and these emotions have largely been shaped by marketing. Quartz is simply better all around, and it can be beautiful, too. Movements like the Seiko 9F, the Citizen 0100, and even vintage movements like the Omega 1332 are beautiful bits of finely finished technology that just make me feel so good. I have mechanical watches in my collection, too, but to me, quartz has always been cooler. Especially when you start to include complications like thermo compensation. It's like comparing a horse and cart to a cutting-edge, self driven automobile. There's no comparison for me, quartz over mechanical.

what about hybrid quartz like albatross movement from omega, or red LED watches back at 80es like hamilton pulsar or omega time computer, or another hybrid like frederique piguet 1270-a quartz with mechanical chronograph... or like a spring drive from either piaget or seiko/GS/Credor, or anything else that is interesting high end quartz movement, not just ETA F03.111 (eventhough omega used them while changing the finishing into cal. 4564). The certina precidrive movement is interesting too!

1989 I chose Quartz over Mechanical in an Omega Seamaster. It had the thermocompensated movement (1441) but it was switched out surreptitiously at the Lancaster, PA Omega tech shop for the single coil . . . which I discovered much later during a battery change. I chose Quartz because I am tough on watches and broke a mechanical once. The basic cal. 1438 gains about 1 sec/week . . . not bad. So, I am about 30 seconds off every Daylight Savings change. I keep spare gaskets which lowers the battery change from $150 to $35!

What's better than bread? Toast! But there is nothing better than a hand made bread, unless it's toasted. That's how I feel about mechanical, quarts and mecha quarts. You have to admire quarts in some respects it is a go-to for the masses.

I've owned a number of Breitling quartz watches (several Aerospace models, B1, B50), and an X33. I can't remember the last time I saw one "in the wild," which is one of the reasons I like them so much.
@iamfuckingyourwaifuandther2743
LMAO that brightling watch. I could imagine walking down the street, people try to mug you and you pull the distress signal. Helicopters and swat teams pull up out of no where.

I am enjoying watchfinder videos - they are great. In this case I am truely missing the GS 9F calibre. It is THE quarzt movement. Lever-mechanism driven second hand for ultimate matching of the second marks. Finally a jumping second for ocd fellas. And theres the manufacture recommended service period of 50 (fifty) years for the movement as a result of the movement beeing sealed from the battery cage. 10 seconds a year rated. Translated from japanese this means a true life performance of 2-3 secs a year. All inhouse - even the quartz crystals. Wrapped in an astonishingly Zaratsu finished case it is a true pleasure to wear.

I absolutely love your video production skills,the effort is so apparent, and much appreciated. My everyday watch is a plain and simple Casio edifice. Solar powered and atomic clock synced. It is faultlessly reliable,shrugs off abuse and has never ever let me down. It has a level of performance that is outstanding for its price bracket. It would still be an amazing watch a ten times the price!

I dismantled a cheapo £3 quartz someone gave me salvaging the quite nice case and strap, the movement inside was tiny, half the size of a Miyota 2115 and it has a date wheel too that hangs over like a big numbered saucer, heck the battery took up a fair bit of the size and apparently up til it died, kept very good time.

I have an older Rolex Submariner I wear for less than rugged situations and a recently acquired Casio G-Shock I wear for work (plumber) and fishing and as a beater. Both serve me well. I just wish I could get the tritium hands and markers replaced with the same on the Rolex. I’m told I can only get them replaced with Superluminova.

I'm not really a fan of quartz but my eco drive is amazing and that breitling is something out of a bond movie. I love it. And let's be real... Those led watches from the 70's are iconic and should definitely be in every watch collection.

Question: does a traditional mechanical watch movement that is in a micro-gravity situation, like that on the International Space Station, keep correct time? Might it run a hair bit faster due to less friction? Will the watch jerk and tumble if let fly?

Hi, I got a question. The first and the last movement in yellow/gold color one is from tag heuer formula 1 old model? I got a one. And just opened the back cover of it. And it’s exactly same like I saw in your video. Plz let me know. Thank you for your awesome video!! :)

I love mechanical watches, but I also own a G shock. It cost me $38, can survive a fall out of a building, has been run over by a 25 ton semi truck, can be frozen solid, then boiled for ten minutes and doesn’t skip a beat, the battery last ten years and cost less than $2 per battery and can be changed in one minute by owner. It loses about 2 seconds per month and can be easily regulated by owner. It has a perpetual calendar, a chronograph, an alarm, a count down timer, oh and has 200 meters water resistance. It is clearly the best tool watch ever created by the hands of man, it is the AK47 of watches. I can lose it, I can get mugged, my ex could steal it off my dresser and I wouldn’t suffer one moment of regret. No one will judge me a ridiculous ponce for wearing it. In short, it is the best tool watch in the world. It does not fill my head with nouveau riche hubris and vulgar narcissism. Winner winner chicken dinner. I do like a JLC though…
