I am holding off to go to Sony. I am waiting for Nikon.

This is the worst time to buy glass or switch system. Right now everyone is waiting for Canon and Nikon to see what direction they are heading towards with their MILC branch.

@@Kprawl291986 you really don't know shit do you? They don't need Sony to make their sensors. They can go to Samsung or Towerjazz. All they need is a company to make the sensors. It's Nikon's design they can take where ever they want too. It's like the iPhone some of its parts inside are made by Samsung.

About the Menu, these mirrorless cameras has so much more function that a dsrl one that is natural the menus have more option to choose from , is not just photography but also video, so wait for those Nikon menus, you will see they will have some learning curve too.

I have no problems with Sony's colors at all and do not want Canon's skin tones that make people look like alcoholics. I have talked to other photographers and discovered that I'm not the only one who is not crazy about the red/orange skin colors from Canon, but the raw files have to be edited afterwards so it does not matter at all. I love my Sony raw files and I work without any problems with them. Everything with colors from the different brands is sometimes a joke and what about Nikon's colors there's a bit green over it, but again no problem!

No doubt! Plus the plethora of videos like this saying "I'm leaving to go from this to that". The companies must love this creation of brand wars. Get the camera which does the trick for you, as the photographer, is the key point.

I currently use a Nikon D300, which I bought new back in 06/07. That was my first (and only) DSLR. Prior to that I owned a Nikon F4 ('92) and the camera before that was a '70s Nikkormat EL. So you can see I don't change my cameras very often! The D300 was the camera where I felt that digital imaging quality in SLRs had met my benchmark from film, and offered much greater convenience. Despite the range in age and technology, there has been a sense of continuity in the handling, build and weight of all three cameras - in particular, the sense of familiarity between the D300 and F4 was a significant factor in my choice of the D300. There is of course now also quite a collection of lenses. Clearly, with these cameras I am not a pro, but an experienced and enthusiastic amateur. Now, for some time I have been contemplating the replacement of the D300. The D500 would seem to have been the obvious upgrade as I love D300 continuous high speed shutter rate, and wide temperature range for snow sports and the D500 has improved on these - but I could not pull the trigger on it. The reason? I would like to extend my media on the next camera to also allow me to shoot quality video - without changing cameras. The crazy 4K crop factor of the D500 seems very limiting, and the AF tracking in video looks terrible. Based on history, I'm probably going to run this next camera for 10 plus years. At my end of the market, the mirrorless camera tech seems to be now at the tipping point, where it would replace the DSLR - much like the D300 was for me a plausible replacement for the F4. So - 5 or 6 weeks ago I was struggling with what to do. It came down to Sony or Fujifilm. The major issue for me with Fujifilm was the 4/3rds format, leading me to consider closely the Sony A7 series. I probably would have put the cash down for this and struggled with lens adaptors, dodgy handling, and a drop in build quality in order to have acceptable images and better video. THANKFULLY the rumours of the new Nikons began to surface literally on the day and I stopped to see what would be coming. Now I am holding off to see the Z6 or Z7 - and I would think there are many doing the same, including those who were considering buying another DSLR. I have faith that Nikon will deliver great cameras. Nikon have enough know-how and experience in all the foundation tech to make these cameras outstanding. The necessary elements are across their whole range of cameras including their just retired 'Nikon 1', their Coolpix P1000/900 cameras, and of course DSLR workhorses like the D5/D850/D500. If Nikon deliver on the promise, and the video is up to scratch, they will have my money that is for sure.

I'm trying to remember the name for people who constantly upgrade or change their kit.....pretty sure their hobbyists with more money than sense, either way it's great because there's plenty of excellent secondhand gear on the market for actual photographers to buy at a good price.

I'm a long time Nikon shooter and very interested to see how this new mirrorless system will work with the glass that I have... It will also be interesting to see how much the price will drop on used "F" mount lenses... One thing that I know for sure, is that the "F" mount lenses will still be excellent no matter what the "Z" mount has to offer... FYI, today I'll be shooting with the D850 and I'm taking my F3 for some film shots, using the same "F" mount lenses. No other system I know can do that!

I use my Nikon 50mm f/1.4 non-AI lens on my Sony A7RIII. It works great. I can also use my manual focus lenses from Canon, Minolta, Olympus, Pentax, Fujica, Konica, Ricoh, Mamiya, and Petri. That is the wonderful thing about these mirrorless cameras.
@Forthejoyofphotography
@Forthejoyofphotography 6 лет назад
Interesting. I own a Nikon D850. As a second camera, I have just bought the Sony A7III. My reasons for this rather than waiting for the Nikon mirrorless. Sony has a track record of mirrorless - the A7 series are tried and tested. You know what you are getting with these cameras. The Sony 'phase' detection AF works superbly. Native lens line-up has improved and adaptive lenses together with 'third party' lenses coming out from Sigma and Tamron - means plenty of choices. Nikon mirrorless - still all speculation and not tested. New lens mount means new 'native' lenses (likely to be a premium as just launching). I can live with the Sony menu. Assigning the most used functions to the function keys. As to the Sony color science. I purchased the setting package from EOSHD - these give a 'Canon' look to video and photos so this is a good workaround. I am happy with my decision thus far. Of course, as always we all need to make our own informed choices and decisions based on our specific needs.

Sounds like he owns old versions of Sony's if Menu, colour and button layout is an issue. All of these have been improved upon in latest versions and are none problematic now. But this is exactly what will be the issue with first Nikon cameras. They will need 1-2 versions of the cameras before they are at the level of beeing fully reliable as a professional cameras.

Even worse that Matt is mentioning it without talking about obvious things like this. I'm all for Nikon doing good things with their cameras. As a commercial photography that bought the Sony A9 only a year ago only because the 850 was not out. I needed a high megapixel camera and the Sony was in stock at my local store. It is a very nice camera, but just does not handle like my Nikon. I will wait and see maybe buyer on the second gen. but not the first one out of the gate.

I shoot Nikon hybrid and kept seeing people (mainly Sony users) talking about the post work required. I used to think am I being lazy or am I not seeing something but my flat profile Nikon files hardly needed any post. After watching Mattias Burling on the D750 files and Taylor Jackson on the D850 files I realised Nikon video files are actually very good. I've owned Sony cameras and sold them all I really found them a pain to use. Also see the slanted lens on how the D850 colour remains more consistent as you go up higher with ISO compared to the A73. For me there is only one thing they need to address and it's a big one - video AF - if they sort that they will be great hybrid cameras.

About the color science part: I used to shoot portraits with the Sony A7ii for 1.5 year, and then switched to the Canon 6D Mark II, because people were having really great feedback about the Canon color science and how easy it is to work with. Guys... the difference in the workflow is truly night and day. The Canon AWB is spot on, and the skintones are beautiful, brown, with tons of tonal detail. Every time I click on the "portrait" profile in Lightroom, it makes me really happy, I could deliver those images without any further tweaking really easily. I use the 6Dii for about half a year, and I had about 100 portrait sessions, I wish I would have switched earlier to make my workflow that much quicker.

EDC Gadgets I currently shoot with a Canon T6, I’m going to upgrade to the Canon 6D Mark II for my photography business, I was skeptical at first because of all the negative reviews, but I’m still going to buy it. What lens do you use for portraits?
@EDCGadgets
@EDCGadgets 6 лет назад
It's really interesting, how at the beginning the 6Dii received horrible reviews, literally the whole internet was against that great camera. After a year, now that people are using it in real life (instead of reading DXO charts), it's interesting to see how all the feedback are drastically changing. The output of the 6Dii is just amazing and it has to be experience in real life portrait scenarios, instead of reading spec sheets. I use mine with the Sigma 85, 50 and 35mm 1.4 Art lenses. Check out my instagram at varga.adam.foto, I use that combo for almost all the pics.

I shoot canon and was thinking of going sony. After going to the store to try out the a7iii, it felt cramped. I left the store empty handed, but was still thinking about getting it(my 7d is starting to show its age compared to newer cameras, also nieces are starting to play more indoor sports also). After reading the fstoppers inbody is vs lense is, i decided the sony wasnt for me. If you look at the color on the portraits example you'll see why. I like in the comments no one mentions that, but when someone did, the fanbois jumped on him like flies on shit.

as we saw an article year ago about Nikon developing something similar to dual pixel autofocus , i think this time they will have good video camera . even i am ok without any video autofocus as Red and Arri alexa kind of professional film cameras also don't have any autofocus system . its more about how you use it . I hope if they have some good picture profile for video something similar to S log or C log . maybe a N log . Z mount will be a good reason to invest in this new system for lots of people because i am sure they will comeup with something like medium format in future , and i am sure those Z mount lenses gonna work on that too so now this system gonna work on DX format , FX and Medium format lots of choices in future .

@AllCarsUnited
@AllCarsUnited 6 лет назад
Would be nice to know what these 2 sony cameras are. Likely older ones as he made no mention of which sony models while he mentions the nikon d850 by model. Secondly, you can customize the colors in camera for Sony in body so there's no need to grade your video "Eosh HD V4 being a perfect example" . I call his comment BS or misleading.
@camaxide
@camaxide 6 лет назад
All 3 of those points are personal preference though.. some like the color on the Canon best, some the colors on Sony, and some on Nikon. And the menu systems are much the same, though it seems more people enjoy the menus on Nikon and Canon than on Sony, though still preference. And button layout is actually the so that reviews tend to not like the focus switch on the back on Nikon D850 (with large lenses) while on Sony it's more not used to, and a few people has reported hitting buttons they didn't mean to based on smaller camera - yet again down to what you like of the button placements. - I do hope Nikons mirrorless will be as good as we hope though, coming one year later than the Sony (referring to A7R III) it should be a bit better than that in most things. exciting times :)

I'm moving from the Sony A99II to the Nikon Z-Mount as well. I've been with the company since the release of the A900 in 2008 and the customer experience has always been poor. I've simply stopped using my A99II out of sheer disgust for the company. They no longer support two of my cameras that are only six years old (A900, A850). Whereas my experience with Nikon has always been great and they've always gone out of their way to support and repair my older gear such as the D4, D800, 200-400 f/4 and 600 f/4. So moving to Nikon full-frame mirrorless is more about positive customer experience and trust. I've already started selling off my a good number of lenses and bodies to make this transition possible.

same thing i agree with you. nikon weakest point is video focus and if the do it right then they are in the game. I am invested in nikon and would wish they deliver with these cameras, what i really want is a durable body , respectable continous shooting, full HD 60fps atleast, fluid focusing during video and a perfectly working F-Z adapter. Will forget sony for nest 3 4 years

Staying right with Sony I love my A9, A7R3 & A73. I can get any job done with them and Not one person or client has ever said anything about my color or do i feel there's a issue with it, lol mainly because I have put in the work to learn my camera and my workflow like everyone should pro or not. So i have no problems and i love the results. There are those that like jumping from camera to camera, Manufacture to Manufacture but i've learned 99% of the time it's not the camera, it's the person behind the camera thats not getting it right or putting in the time to learn their gear and workflow. Today you can get a A6000 and have great results with the right lenses and lighting so jumpers will be jumpers. Great show and thanks for sharing the info Artoftheimage. Staying with Sony :)

all we only need to take a picture on the go, as long as its taken, sharp, contains emotion/connection/colours good who cares, maybe the evolution in Nikon as a company will fuel more glass manufacturing on the new mount, and charged firmware updates?? Maybe we would buy just one camera and depending on what type of camera you need determined by firmware, defined by what cost you paid. Would save them on Body production, parts, expansion. So we would need 2 bodies, 1 with 1 slot and lower spec, other 2 slots high speed spec with future proof compatibility, however that may be a long stretch of the imagination.Personally i want to change my backup camera(D800) to either another D850 or Z7, thus i am waiting to see what they are like and what its bringing to the table and their downsides.

Sony changed their colour science from the early DSLRs, which was really good, to the recent mirrorless, which is pretty bad. They've started to tweak it in response to user complaints and seem to be heading in the Canon direction. In any case, competition from Nikon and Canon will motivate Sony to straighten the kinks in their system.

I already been there .... Being Nikon user ( D 810) bought a Sony A7Rm3 and few super expensive glass , Could not get the results I am used to sold everything lost much more money than I expected, Sony will never see one $ from me. The biggest issue is the resell value is horrible due to no one is willing to pay even 50% on mint Sony gear . Sadly their is a reason...

I don’t think Canon MLC is going to be major kick ass camera. Due to the fact they are making their own sensors. There is a reason why Nikon new MLC is going to use the Sony sensors just like every other cameras like Fuji, Hasselblad, and Panasonic MLC.
@thefailingstudent
@thefailingstudent 6 лет назад
I think Canon will do good. They already have mirrorless cameras, so they have experience, heck they even topped sony in their home market (the apsc cameras). Canon will make something that just works out of the gate. Yes Canon has less dr then sony, but who shoots charts all day? Who purposely under exposes their shots -5 stops? I dont know if acid_ reinx knows this, but Nikon designs their own sensor, and sony builds it. Sony is also an OEM, so why not use them instead of hiring people, and making it inhouse! its cost effective. Canon has been making their own sensors since the beginning, if they are that terrible why are they still here?
@wiraphotography7805

rle737ng why? I use canon 5d mark 2 until now. Upgrade to 1dx mark 2 as main camera and 5d2 as back up. just be patience for canon mirorless fullframe unless nikon mirorless is so good that you have no reason to hold back.

How silly. Nikon hasn’t even said what their mirrorless will be yet. They’ve only announced an announcement. Stop looking at rumour sites. Couple of things 1. Colour science issue. This implys people don’t edit their footage/ photos. I’ve had no problem adjusting colours on Sony, or canon or Panasonic. If there is an issue it’s usually me. 2. Menus, Sony offers my menu which is a custom menu. Makes it easier than other systems to use. I’m willing to bet the Nikon mirrorless won’t be great but will wait till it’s actually released to make up my mind. I say this cause it’s their first generation of a brand new system and history tells us, almost no one gets it right first time round.

Jessie, you don't need to explain me the differences between Nikon (810) and Sony (7R3). Shooting both and I can make them render 100% alike. Everything else is of course totally subjective. Things that suck for you sucks of course. The Sonys aren't weather sealed. That's objective for sure :) Menus on my Sony doesn't suck for me at all. Everything dedicated to Fn buttons and 3 memories. I can't ask for more :)

So > 2000 shot's on one battery charge suks for you? Well alright then. It sucks for you. Durability of the camera is perhaps a bit too early to cement as an objective fact. I have a 1st gen. A7S with 120.000 shots on it's counter. It's an old fellow now, but it still go on and on. But obviously Sony sucks for you and let it be then. None saying you have to shoot a Sony camera, is there? Have fun with whatever you like best. There's a camera for everyone :)

I do sincerely laugh when I hear people complain about the button layout on the Sony models. The A9, especially, has massive possibilities for button customization - some of the lens have customizable buttons too.I had a Pentax before my Sony and I found both have tons of menus, but once you (it's a crazy thought) get to KNOW your camera, it's actually mind blowing how easy it is to find stuff. Imagine that! I think it's great Nikon is coming out with a mirrorless and I'm excited for Nikon fans. I LOVE no blackout shooting, 20 fps, EVF (no more checking your shots with a hat or hand over the viewfinder on a sunny day!) and no sound shooting (in fact, hearing a DSLR clack clack clack nowadays is.....old (to me imho :) Some great features and it's great for the industry to keep surging forward to help us have better tools for taking photographs (and video :)

My question is why would someone switch to sony? Cause it Never ever cross my mind to do that. LOL canon will come out with fullframe mirorless. Its just a matter of times. I see alot of people fall into tech hype and marketing strategy created by sony. To bad. LOL

Again into Henry's to try a Sony camera and my fingers were jammed in against the lens with no room to move. I asked the sale person to show me how the eye detect works, he couldn't find it in the menus. I will wait for the Nikon and buy it if there are no major issues.

Eye auto focus tracking is very easy to set up with the Sony A7 cameras. I really don’t understand how some of you guys purchase new camera gears and don’t have the time to sit down and play around with it or you can find it in the manual pamphlet book simple.

Only fools rush in. These new Nikons will have teething pains. I’d wait a year so they can get all the bugs out. I’m sticking with Sony:)

Sony color has always been horrible the reason why I have never went Sony. I am most likely leaving Olympus for the Nikon Z but I will wait a year.

My biggest gripes are sony screams even the rx s the bottom is blocked in selfie mode the a73 screen res is crap A6500 screen unusable outdoors like the slo mo large Af areas though not sure on colours more realistic canon more flattering re people but bump up the sat in post i have an rx v and happy with it overall also in video playback in vid no time duration displayed.

Yet you make no mention of the a7r3 and a9 that have amazing screen resolution and a zing visibility outdoors
@andrewbristoe1833
@andrewbristoe1833 6 лет назад
All Cars United not only those but the touch screens when implemented too if you are comparing it to canon or pan or most of the others! sony large ares of af are great and they give you a lot of slo mo.

I think he called you stupid. But alas Mexicans dont want to learn a different language, you would think if you lived in the USA for 20 years(in encounter them in the hospitals i work) they would know some English. I agree with your comment. The reason why sony had to go mirrorless is because they couldnt survive in the dslr market. When canon and nikon come over, they will drop cameras eventually. History repeats itself, why would this be any different? Further proof: Canon over took them in the apsc market in japan, they havent updated their apsc line in awhile.

thefailingstudent lol! You are so right! The world is full of ignorant people. Poor guy; and yes Sony will drop everything like they have done before! It saddens to see people who think of brads like the only good is theirs. I have been shooting since 1978/79. I learned with Canon, but I’ve been with Nikon too (in the past for 8 years or so). Today I own 2 1DXii, 1 5Dsr, 1 Hasselblad, 2 XT2’s and 1 GFX. But knowing what Sony have done in the past (dropping and abandoning customers, or just selling whole tech to other brands and stopping market) just make me stay away from them. In more than 30 years they have done it at least 13 times, if I recall right. Every camera has pros and cons and a photographer choose the best tool for their needs. I prefer Canon for weddings, and many paid work, Fuji for travel and personal, Hasselblad for portraits, and photo commercials and some land/cityscapes. The undeniable truth is that when it comes to the 5D and DX lines Canon produce top notch quality! Sony (as much success as they have had) still needs to prove themselves not by their tech but by being loyal to their customers and that is only done with time. Canon and Nikon are coming and they will do it with class and style, powerful and reliably well. Moreover I think Nikon is bringing a small medium format (645) bcs that mount, and the Z in front,makes me think of a 645 medium format sensor like Fuji GFX. After all Japan told Fuji to help Nikon and the agreement was for 10 years.

Sony is just junk, I dripped it last year already and that was my best move. What a horrible, horrible toy camera system that is.
