I believe the naming of the Nikon mirrorless reflect the Nikon 1 series of mirrorless they had it up to the j5 and their next mirrorless is Z6. Just my observation. Love your videos. They inspire me to improve my own constantly.

Canon already have a lens like this, the EF 50mm f/1.0L. Sure, it’s a bit old, but if they would release a version 2 of it, I would probably buy it. The 58mm f/0,95 is one of the things that could make me switch from Canon to Nikon, and one of the reasons I never will switch to Sony, or at least not as long as they are on the E-mount.

Hi Matt, I always enjoy your gentle, studied videos. This new camera is going to have to have a fantastic focusing system, with manual override, focus peaking, focus zoom, eye tracking and God knows how many focusing points to justify the lens, if it can manage all this and more they can get away with average video function in the first iteration as long as it is better at everything else than any of the competition, it could even get away with being outrageously expensive!. However if it fails to excel in any significant department and fails in the market, it would be easy to see Nikon go under, they are already in trouble trying to meet demand for the 850, when a business fails to satisfy it's corporate investors it can fall apart very suddenly, you can expect to see the company sold to Fujifilm!. Hey Matt, Thanks for the enticing news. Another great video. I am new on the scene of photography with a Nikon D5600. I can tell you for a fact I will never spend more than $1400 on a lens. But then that's me, a hobbyist. Maybe the professionals will have a totally different view of it.

Do you think the new Nikon 24mp will be at the 2000 price mark? I am looking forward for the new system for 2 reasons first the existing line up will get a price de-crease cause of the new system and also the mirroless will bring loads of competition. The 58 sounds like an interesting lens but I don’t know if it would justify the high price tag.

Its gonna double as a 45mm F0.75 medium format lens if Nikon puts a medium format sensor in that same body. Im sure the circle of projection will cover both the full frame and medium format sensors like many other lenses do. Or even an 85mm F1.4 for APSC. Nikon could very well put three different size sensors in the same body and that lens would be great on all 3 sensors.

I've used a Canon 85mm f1.2. Bloody nightmare to nail focus. Great if you get it spot on but the slightest movement and you miss. God knows what a f0.95 will be like. Sony have the Mitakon f0.95 but it's a bit soft and is said to be not a true f0.95.

It seems like the cameras aren't going to be D850 pro in terms of ergonomics, buttons, dials etc. so it if that is true it's going to be heavily dependent on how much it's all going to cost, who Nikon has designed it for, how accurate the autofocus is or isn't. Basically it has to grade out against the rest of the game ack and be a major advantage.

This will be very exiting as well as expensive combo. In the past shooting, 0.95 lens required allot of bracing and tripod use hoping the subject is frozen solid or cemented and still. But it looks like Nikon will use allot of tricks to have this combo work well. 5 axis VR being one of them and coate the glass in god and fairy dust. Just thinking of this makes me want to sell my soul.

Modern sensors capture so much light, so low light ability, no. The other side is DoF and bokeh, even a f1.4 at that focal length provides plenty . However it is to provide a stating point for a new range of fast z-mount lenses, that could make some sense to the practical photographer.

The DOF on the f0.95 is gonna be so shallow wide open that missing focus will increase. More so than on a F1.4 or 1.2

Tamas Varga He is on the bandwagon that mirrorless cameras can do no wrong. When in reality they have many faults. The biggest is that they are no where nearly as weather sealed as Nikons and Canons pro bodies.

Charles Vandergriff There is no perfect camera in my opinion. In principle, there is no reason why a mirrorless cannot be just as weather sealed and robust as a D5/1DXII. Sony didn't make one yet so the door is wide open for Nikon and Canon.

It should be very expensive and I bet at f/1.2 it’ll be amazing???? Just guessing of course! Can’t wait to see what and where Nikon is going with the new Mirrorless system. If they are smart it’ll be with Phenomenal video. I do believe it’ll have great eye autofocus. If you’re making lenses at f/.95 you have to have a very very good af system. So I think you’re going to see the next generation in af coming out of the Nikon camp. Again just a guess! I just read on Nikons Professional site. The president of Nikon had mentioned the pursuit of Nikon in working on Retina or I detection devices . So I’m thinking this will be passed onto the camera segment also. Nikon has also the ability to build the best lenses in the world or close to if they want. They are implementing the step motor systems dual motor system into their lenses. This in conjunction with gray I detection sensor technology should make for fast and accurate mirrorless af system. Another guess of course. Do they spend the money on a gamble they can take over the mirrorless game or the photography hybrid world ? Tough call and with a Giant like Sony do they want to try ?

It seems you know very little about emount or mirrorles mount in general. Sony user's are adapting lenses from all kind of brand, years, just as an example, m42,39 exacta, md, fd, canon, nikon, Lm, Actually with techart pro on sony's 2nd and 3rt generation provide you AF. My a7iii +techart pro+ (MD's, FD, M42, LM, etc) even does Eye AF. You can google about it. I even think that it could be possible to put the sony mirrorless lenses on that new Nikon, let's wait a bit and see the geeks what they have to say.

You are aware that the new Nikon mirrorless mount is significantly larger than Sony's, and about the same distance from the sensor. It won't fit! If by a miracle you can squeeze it in there I am sure Nikon is happy to sell you one though ;)

All of this hype is interesting in a hypothetical way, and entertaining, but I will never choose to afford these systems (not once you add a real lens complement to the body.) However, I may benefit in that the prices of DSLRs may drop as a result :-) If I had the kind of money we are undoubtedly talking, I'd be shooting medium format now.

f0.95 on Full Frame is going to be a focus nightmare! Shooting f 1.8 is hard enough such that I tend to shoot portraits at f4.0 and above in the main to keep eyes to ears in focus. There's going to be a lot of glass in that lens so it will be quite a lump. It's also going to cost mega bucks too I expect.

Chuck Eggen Yeah sure, it'll be great shooting in the dark with, you can never get enough light 😉 It has its uses artistically for some no doubt as well. So is it pointless? Well no but it will be a very specialised lens that lots of people will want but few will really need. Given lenses are never at their sharpest wide open it will give those who want sharp images at f1.4 the opportunity to do so. So there are positives to a lens like this but I do have to ask how many photographer's need it.

Whenever I shoot portrait, I shoot wide open. I would never shoot with f/4. Most people, don’t want to see every wrinkle sharp, and definitely not ears or pimples all over the face. 50/1.2L gives that sharp eye that you want, but covers up a lot of skin imperfections. My 85/1.4L IS is sharper, and not always as good for portrait. I miss my 85/1.2L because of that super thin dept of field, combined with the awesome background blur.

It's true , manual focusing at wide open aperture is very thin and demands time and patience. It will not have auto focus. Using this lens in dim lighting is even more difficult to nail precise focusing. Wide open means everything outside the thin focal plane will be out of focus. Artistically it would be magnificent. On a side note, Canon has the world's only AF 50mm F1.0, built in 1989 and it's bokeh is legendary. Still works on all Canon bodies too.

I don't need any of the camera gear I have. I don't make a penny from photography but I still buy a lot of equipment. It's not always about what you need and often it's about what you want. Why do working photographers think they are the only ones buying gear. If that were the case they would seldom get updates and prices would be sky high because of low sales. Be happy that niche products exist because it's those things that keep the tech moving forward. I own a D5, D500, and two D850s. I have a room full of lenses. It's my addiction and I work hard for my money. I say keep bringing us niche lenses and camera bodies.

No it won't make me change, dropping camera sales generally are forcing the big manufacturers to replace volume income with high price income, it seems to me that Nikon and Canon will be differentiated by high end cameras with phenomenal prices for good glass and that the 'hobbyist' market who may use smartphones everyday will be left to the panasonic/olympus and fuji offerings - doesn't worry me as I'm a MFT system owner (I still, after film days, regard ISO 3200 as miraculous and I'm not a pixel peeper). Yes it's my hobby but I'm not going to spend my house value on camera equipment so I think Nikon and Canon I'll pass thank you.

All the larger camera companies have some quirks (due to CEO) which do not let them shine. Though Kodak brought out the first digital camera, their wrong decisions have sunk that company. Canon's "holding back technologies", if that attitude persists, may make them sorry in the long run. And Nikon's "high-priced products" may turn their success into failure. Just read that their "cheaper" FF MILC may be around $3,000. That may disallow their competing against A7 III. Their NOCT lens may be priced over $2,000 if their attitude persists.

The NOCT lens is anticipated to be around 2500-3000 and have nothing to do with attitude. Sony have very aggressive camera prices, also their glass is higher priced.The rumor is with new Z cameras you will be getting the new adapter for existing glass, which is a steal. As in-house product it is expected to work perfectly, and add great value to the purchase. Existing Nikon glass is prolific.

Yes, because in no way you can benefit from a faster lens using Breznier method! Also this method is universal and readily applicable to every low-light scene possible! In fact don't bother manufacture anything faster than f/6. Keep the prices low and we will use Breznier to compensate!
