I would take the z6 even over the Z7. I like Nikon’s ergonomics. I’m used to 24 megapixel and those files will be smaller than the ones in the Z7. The battery is rechargeable. The EN-EL 15 battery that is used with the D500 and D850 can be used with the Z series cameras. The rechargeable battery for the D series camera can’t be charged with the adapter for the Z series cameras. Then there are the F mount lenses that work with the FTZ adapter. Then of course all the things mentioned in your video. Looking forward to more info as the weeks progress

Well, I have used the camera and I really liked almost everything about it. True there was a Nikon guy standing beside me, but I've used enough cameras to know what I'm looking for (if I'm a fan of any brand these days it's Fuji for sure). Focus was fast and accurate in the shop with fairly poor light. The image quality looked amazing and is surely better than the Sony competition (which I've also played with). The Z7 felt so right in my hand that I was sorely tempted to do a runner with it, but I suspect I might have gotten into trouble. OK, there's only one card slot, but the camera has fantastic wi fi capabilities, so maybe there are other ways to back up pictures. The biggest lapse, I know, is no eye recognition, which is a great pity given how well it works on other cameras. (Just for the record, I went into the shop during a lull and had around 30 minutes to evaluate the camera.)

Aside from all the shortages the Nikon Z camera has to offer, what really killed me on the Z6 is that it has a Optical Low Pass Filter while the Z7 doesn't. That is why I'm staying with my Fuji with the Xtrans sensor. Looking to see what the XT3 offers and can it compete with the Nikon D500 in low light capture.

I have a d7200 and wants to move to Full frame mirrorless. I hesitated between the Z6 and Sony a7iii. As I understood Sony have better af, better dynamic range and they know what they are doing (gen3) but no interval timer... I mean the exposure smoothing and interval timer on my DSLR just made all of my tinelapses. I don't understand why Sony did not keep it. Ofc you can have an external one but mirrorless are supposed to be light, right ? So z6 won my choice..

I just looked at the MTF-charts of the new S-lenses. They seem spectacular. I think one clear advantage is that the "kit lens" coming with the Z-cameras is on par or better than the 24-70/2.8E except that it is one stop slower of course. The resolution of the Sony 28-70/3.5-5.6 falls very quickly towards the edges and corners...

Hi Matt. I am a huge fan- I bought my first DLSR (Nikon d7200 with Nikon 50 1.8G and Sigma 17-50 2.8) on your recommendation and it really got me in to photography. Loved it. So much so I soon upgraded to a Sony A7III. And I must say I haven’t looked back. The whole package is amazing- the eye AF in particular has been a game changer for me. I have some decent- fairly reasonable- glass, and I haven’t found the menus and ergonomics to be as big a problem as some have made out- I have a lot of the functionality I need mapped to the custom buttons which negates the need for the menu much of the time. But it does make me sad you don’t seem to be giving this camera a fair run, and every video you put out at the moment seems to be either extolling the Z6/7 or just slating the Sony. Could you please get one in to review hands on?

I already heard Nikon's BS sales pitch. I really don't need to have someone read it to me word for word again. I grew up with Nikon. I went to Sony just to give my wrist a break from the weight of the Nikon DSLR System. The next thing I know I was having fun again. That was 5 years ago. I took a lot of crap from people back then and now it's your turn. This new offering from Nikon is not for anybody who is really serious about their gear. Sony has Nikon beat, Fuji has Nikon beat, Olympas has Nikon Beat. The Nikon 850 Kicks ass on the new system by Nikon. If you absolutely need to stay with Nikon, you need to give them a few more years to try to catch up. Good luck. Try to give us a fair review after you try out the camera your self. Thanks

I own both and have a lot time using them in the field. Basically, the A7 has faster autofocus. The Nikon has better engineering, color science, menus, a lot more special functions and feels better in the hand. The new lens lineup is going to be far better when they all become available. But even using the f4 zooms and the primes right now is a solid indication of just how good the rest are going to be.

Real Good video Matt and thanks for making it. Though I do believe there are some valid criticisms of Nikon's first 2 "major" mirrorless cameras, the vast majority of them are from people who don't like Nikon (like another camera brand, for whatever their own personal reason is). These aren't perfect cameras in the mirrorless category which makes them just like every other mirrorless produced so far. But you have detailed why in many ways, that the z6 and z7 are better than the Sony counterparts (not even sure what their names exactly are). Was surprised that the Sony didn't have a top LCD screen. And one thing you didn't mention is that every camera body needs a lens attached. I would say, here, ADVANTAGE Nikon. But Ive actually heard some commenters say that Nikon needs to catch up with Sony with their glass. I don't have a response for that one. But glad you shed some true light here like you always do.

@@allbee83 it is actually pretty simple, 7 is the series of the camera, they currently have a 7 and a 9. R is from the high resolution version, the M3 is the generation, 3 or III is newer then 2 or II and so on........ Professional photographers are used to this type of titling, Canon has been using a similar type of naming for years.
@allbee83
@allbee83 5 лет назад
I appreciate your response Attila. I do know about nomenclature amongst the different camera makers, having been an avid/semi-pro photographer for more than 30 years. But when a camera name is on the verge of sounding like a serial number, its time to refresh the name, at least IMO. The name of the camera isn't important. But Ive always been a Nikon person and Id take the Z6 or 7 over this Any day. Now, and more so for the future. And the first iteration Nikons are better, technologically, in many respects, and they've managed to do it with cameras that have one letter and one number, lol.

I want to see real hands on testing with production cameras and production firmware, until then, the only person that I've seen images from was Fro using his F mount lenses. I'm not in the market for a new camera. The D4's, D500's and the D850 that I own are all working fine. Silent shutter and mirror-less isn't a reason for me to purchase. What is of issue for me is having the second card slot, having a battery grip and the ability to use all of my current glass. The FTZ adapter needs to incorporate a screw drive mechanism to auto-focus D series glass. Ergonomics has to be right. I've got large hands and fingers. I can't grip a Sony a7r or an a9 without my middle finger knuckle getting stuck into the tight space between the grip and lens. By all reports (RU-vid reviewers) the z mount lenses while supposedly sharp, feel cheaply made plastic creations. A grand for a 24-70 f/4.0 zoom? That's a kit lens at a high end lens price. Nikon, shutdown that Chinese factory and get a hold on your quality manufacturing. The z mount lenses are a joke, and a bad one at that.

I was a Nikon user for a lot of years and just recently switched over to the Sony A7R III. If I ever get any extra money I probably get a Sony A7 III camera. Suspect this guy is just trying to validate is his reason in buying a Nikon Z6. I'm glad Nikon is getting into the FF Mirrorless market for competition is good for everyone. The Sony A7 III & Sony A7R III have proven they take good pictures and videos. I'm sure Nikon with the A6 & A7 lineup are going to follow suit and that is - have the capabilities of taking good pictures.. A camera is only a good as the person behind it.

Autofocus on the Nikon Z Mirrorless Camera with its Z lens by DPReview: "Autofocus in video is up there with the best. Tracking and refocusing on subjects is intuitive and reliable... besting what Canon and Sony offer." "AF-S performance is snappy and precise." So what does AF-S mean? It means Autofocus with Silent Wave Motor in the Nikon Z lens for speedy autofocus operation.
@stanspb763
@stanspb763 5 лет назад
I was not that interested in ML, particularly after shooting my friend's a7II which had the worst ergonomics of any camera I ever felt in 50 years of shooting. On the same shoot and conditions, my D800 got the images right the first time without menu diving. But the idea adding a D850 has been brewing in my mind since the workhorse D800 has 300,000 frames and I could retire the D7000 to 3rd camera on a shoot. But the features of the Z7 really has me intrigued. 1 XQD card will be more reliable with a longer MTBF than consumer cart interfaces like the problematic SD. we all have had SD cards fail but XQD was designed as the pro grade memory system. So XQD is an advantage for me over 2 all plastic sockets for SD. The other major knock by early YT pundits is no EyeFocus. I just can't figure out why someone who is an experienced photographer would bother letting a camera decide what it picks for focus target. That is my job because the camera has no idea what I want the results to be. The heavy bias on the Sony is nearest object and that is very often not what I want as the peak focus plane. I shoot a lot of wide aperture shots and seldom have the nearest focus plane the key subject. So I would just turn it off if it can be defeated in the Sony. Nikon seems to understand what photographers use a camera for. Battery life has also been knocked but not by people who actually used it, a non-issue. As you say, everyone has extra batteries since all our cameras use the same one and have an independent charger. That is a much more pro configuration than plugging in a tiny flimsy plug into the camera to charge when the camers should be working of its keep. Advantage Nikon in a big way. Build quality is radically different with Nikon, connectors are high quality, tough castings, no stamped sheet metal etc. BIG advantage for Nikon. Color science according to early hands on review is just better. Canon's R series might have very good color also. The most interesting aspect of the Z series is what that big flange and short flange distance allows in designing simpler, lighter lower distortion lenses that are as sharp wide open as f/4. That is the biggest advantage. I will wait for the 85 1.2 and buy the 35 1.8 with the camera plus the adaptor for my 15 fast Nikkor lenses. The more hands on reviews are coming out, the more the cries of "deal breaker" appear to be childish rants from ignorance by people who are not Nikon shooters in the first place so have no idea why so many of us choose Nikon....build, handling and image quality.

I was first contemplating between sony a7iii and fuji xt3,but after using them, ergonomically both were uncomfortable to hold .I then tried the z6 ,which was amazing .The quality of the camera is top notch. For me the z6 is the camera to buy. My reasons: -Good colour science,better than sony. -Good ergonomics -Im not a pro so 1 card slot is fine.even if i had two card slots i would not use it for redundancy, maybe for more storage. -good battery life.(I read quite a bit about it ,and all reviewers claim its atleast 1000 shots) -lens for me( i was going to buy 35 or 50 1.8 and a f4 zoom with a7iii which nikon has natively.Thats all I need.) -intervalometer -the lcd is awesome ,2.1 m dots -weather sealing -FF(wanted to upgrade form a 70d) -4k30p no crop,1080 120p no crop 8 bit video is fine for my needs. -usb charging -customisable modes (missing on xt3) -nice evf -silent shooting -ibis -good lowlight -lots of buttons for customisation.

I would like to see all of the camera manufacturers bundle a battery charger with their cameras and have USB charging ports on the camera bodies. If you do not have access to electricity but have taken a power bank along, you can plug the bank into the camera's USB to charge it. And, as Matt said, the advantage of having a separate battery charger is that one can charge batteries while using the camera. So, I would rather have both.

@alandalalandal2040
@alandalalandal2040 5 лет назад
Buffers use onboard flash memory which has much faster rate to read sensor data to allow burst shooting. The size of this buffer memory is the key in determining the camera burst rates. Then the data is transferred to the secondary memory, XQD in this case, at a different much slower speed than buffer memory. Think this as two cascade reservoirs with different ingress flow rates.

A huge advantage to Nikon is their Raw and color profile seem deeper and more color accurate for skin tones out of the gate than Sony does by a long shot. The Raw images I find are thicker with more data and more usable data. Having used Sony cameras for years, I fell out of love with their entire eco system. They where brighter, contrasting TV’s, video cameras, still cameras…. And soon I just really got sick of them. I think they have toned down a lot since then. Now for a point for Sony that I don’t care about, but has to give Sony is their AF is far faster with better hit ratios than the Z6 or even Z6II. However Z9 seems as though Sony has closed the gap with Canon and Sony AF. Again I don’t even use AF lenses so I really couldn’t care less.. but Sony has the advantage there. Also if your using the Nikon adapter for your older AF lenses.. they will work, but are slower and hunt more than they did on you old DSLR body. But the Z series I think is made to run with new Z glass and that Nikon made a decent adapter to talk to a fair portion of the later year full frame glass is great.. but if you are a wedding photographer or journalist, you will want the new Z glass.. Me? As I rambled on on another of your videos I use vintage prime lenses… Nikon Manual Focus, Zenit - Helios etc.. or modern Lensbaby and maybe some future Lomography lenses…. I think I have a couple Nikon AF 50mm somewhere around here… . Never use them of course, but maybe some day. My older body’s (D300s and D5200) seem to never focus fast or where I want them to. I’m much faster with a MF lens on my D300s with focus assist (green dot in viewfinder). But yes…. I’m thinking of a Z6II or a used Z6 if they drop in price once the chip shortage and post Christmas season 2021 (now January 2022) is over. Once more new cameras land I expect the Z6 will drop in price some more… and honestly kind of hoping that the tech from the Z9 will filter into a Z6III… but I think that will be years and I would be hurting myself waiting that long to move up from my decent but older bodies….. unless I knew it was 6 months away.. and I think it’s more like 3-4 years…. But yes.. for stills and hybrids, I’ll stick with Nikon.. for strictly shooting cinema, I do like shooting Bm BRAW on BMPCC4K.. though it’s a tiny sensor.. and BM doesn’t even make a full frame camera…. Their APSC sensors have canon mounts so unlike Z cam or even my JVC LS300 (super 35 sensors with MFT mount….) put on a 0.71 speed booster and brings the super 35 to nearly full frame.. 1.08 crop for instance.. But up until Z6 and Z6II came out I was looking at Sony, Canon and other mirrorless cameras…. Not worring about the other brands at the moment.. sticking with Nikon I believe.

I am a Nikon user and probably a Z6 future owner but... I do believe that Sony has the edge vs this 1st generation Nikon mirrorless cameras. The one thing that keeps me loyal is the adapter as I have quite a good lens collection. Personally I don’t care about video, the 1 card slot or the battery life, if the AF is good I am sold (no Eye AF though) :(

I currently shoot with a Nikon but if the new A7SIII is half the camera it is rumored to be then it blows these new Z series cameras out of the water. Nikon had to come out with a camera fast to stop the bleeding even if it specs out to the Sony MK2 cameras. If you own Nikon glass you would go Z, if you were starting from scratch Nikon has a couple years of catch up on the mirrorless side.
@JAID01
@JAID01 5 лет назад
Yes the glass would be my primary reason. Although very happy DSLR'ing the thought of eventually changing all the fantastic lenses which have taken considerable toil to muster doesn't sit too happily. I had a play with a Z7 using an adapter and, call me easily satisfied, but was perturbed by nothing. Focus may have been a touch slower here and there or harder to grab but this was balanced comfortably for me by video capability like I never have had. Always very pleased to have two memory slots, when I stand back and think about it, I can say I have never had a failed card. I don't doubt two slots will debut soon on the Z's and that would be good but with XQD likely even better than the good cards I have had, a lost day of shooting must be a very rare possiblilty and one where you would just hope a second camera might have picked up enough to save the day anyway (if good data cannot be extracted from the card or you cannot go back the next day.) Every moment changes every view but good moments abound.

Guys we are yet to see the Nikon Z cameras in action. All what’s been released is their beta version. Give this few months into production. I do agree that they should have included a second card slot. I am not a big Sony fan except for their tv and sound systems. I would like to wait and see how Canon and Nikon performs in terms of autofocus, video quality, sharpness, etc. Let time prove the winner.

Foto4Max Have you used the camera for a few minutes atleast....or are you basing your opinion on the experience of others.....if the latter then I can't convince you...I have used these 2 cameras for a few minutes so have a bit of an understanding where Nikon is coming from...... Else THINK.... - 10bit 422 4k Full frame in $2000 - a mount that transfers more light....even f1.8 is sharp going forwards - flange distance that will lenses smaller in the future - smooth autofocus transition - weather sealed body - and we do not need 2 cards at all..... - The battery life for photos is ~ 1300 - 1500 shots per charge - The battery life for video is ~ 2.5 hours in 4K Where are we competing with any camera in its class today....there is seriously no competition for this camera anymore...hope Sony pick's up from here but they will have to change their mount at first to start with (which was developed for APS-C cameras).....and which will take them a lot of time.
@hitmanhart22

This product is truly revolutionary. There is no competition for this product at this time. In fact Nikon should be appreciated for bringing a revolutionary imaging product....this camera has no competition today...comparing it to the sony a7iii and the a7r3 is like taking it backwards. Think about it......how many cards do you use in your iPhone? What happens when you take an amazing image on an iPhone..... yes the ones that go on the billboards for Apple ads???? The entire technical world is moving towards a cloud based architecture where data redundancy is considered a waste. We should appreciate Nikon for taking a lead in this arena..thinking something different.....and here these so called great photographers are bashing them asking for 2 cards. In the next few years...we won't have any cards in our 'professional' cameras...may be a very fast SSD and powerful battery that transmits data and backs it up......that's why Nikon's camera is revolutionary. Keep it up Nikon....#Trailblazer The cameras of the next generation will be out within a few years.....there are folks with imaging technologies from labs that are out there using cameras without external devices (e.g. Cards) thus removing lag and wasted energy. You will be surprised by the cameras of the next generation which come packed with AI algorithms....now that is next Gen. And that is why Nikon needs to be appreciated for the revolutionary futuristic design and here we are debating about 2 sd card slots. This camera has no competition....great work #Nikon The large mount and the short flange distance by itself is innovative and will help bring much better lenses in the future. The 10bit Full Frame 4K video is a first of its link at this cost….WOW Battery Life…..we now know that it does not matter…..folks have tested for straight 2 hours on an D850 battery and 1100 shots later, the camera still had 33% left……the D850 had 44% left. What else do you want…stop complaining about the 2 slots…..its enough.

The Z6 has a lot going for it despite the many flaws that it shares with its bigger brother the Z7. That said I'd say these Z series bodies only make sense to existing Nikon users who are already heavily invested in the f mount system. For somebody starting from scratch I couldn't recommend them, the Sony A7III being a more compelling proposition at this time. 😊

It's funny how people get upset at Nikon and forget that the two first generations of Sony were not having 2 card slots , good battery etc. but still despite these trade offs Sony managed to sell The A7 R/RII; A7S/I/II & A7i/II anyway. Am not saying that Nikon is perfect , but i understand the choice. Unlike Sony NIKON has already A HUGE RANGE OF CAMERAS (Dslrs) in the market and although Nikon is starting with mirrorless , they need to protect their current flagships too. The NIKON Z6 and Z7 will sell anyway . People bashed the Canon 6D mark II , but now are buying it for vlogging. Nikon's reputation is well known . Instead of spreading hate , how about you Sony lovers etc keep shopping what suits you and leave us the Nikon lovers with our babies ;-) ? At the end of the day WE ALL TAKE PICTURES , a camera is just a TOOL !
@PhotoBug3042
@PhotoBug3042 5 лет назад
With all due respect, Landry, the fact that Sony USED to lack 2 slots is fairly pointless in that consumers today are not debating between the Z series and obsolete Sonys. The 1996 Sony DSC-F1 had a 0.3 megapixel sensor- what does that have to do with my choices TODAY when I walk into a camera store? It's not just Sony users who are 'spreading hate'. As a dedicated Nikon lover, I howled when the D7500 came out with one slot, and complained again when the same error was repeated on the Z series. Would you propose that Nikon users remain silent and just hope that Nikon eventually figures out by blindly guessing what consumers prefer in a camera? If I didn't love Nikon cameras, I would simply quietly change brands but I want them to get it right, so I speak up.
@vokso11

Long time Nikon lover here .Thank you for sharing your opinion. Allow me to clarify : Am I a fan of the fact that the z6 and Z7 do not come with 2 card slots ? ABSOLUTELY NOT ! Is it a deal breaker to me ? NO! Will I buy one ? Why not ? Is there a perfect camera that suits everyone ? Of course not and does not exist yet ! Is there a "perfect" camera for each type of photgrapher ? YES ! Each photographer know what he/she wants , therefore he/she should get the camera that suits his/her needs better. Am not in a rush to go mirrorless , I am perfectly comfortable with DSLRs as they won't stop me from getting the result I want. FYI : My first DSLR & digital camera was the Sony A220. You want Nikon to get things right ? So do I ! We should let Nikon figure out that aspect of the business , in the meantime let simply focus more on getting great pictures.

@ibdaramy5455 5 лет назад
An 80MP sensor will mess up night photography and give you a very shaky video experience. Not recommended for the general consumer. Actually, Nikon is providing an affordable lens bundle with the camera. And if you want to purchase Nikon's sharp F-mount lenses, they will perform better on this new Nikon Z camera as it will provide in-body 5-axis image stabilization that none of Nikon's DSLR camera can provide.

Good job Nikon ambassador. Nothing is ever perfect, and I am sure you did a good job missing one card slot, banding, bad focusing, refreshing time in 9fps, and if I looked up other misses if would go on and on. I will tell you, I went to Nikon in 1972, EL2-FM-F-F2-F3AS-N60-N80-D65-D90 and over 6 lens. When I moved to the desert, I wanted a smaller lighter system, Nikon showed a poor product, I had a hard time between Olympus-Fuji and Sony won my choice and have been very happy. I really wanted Nikon to win me back before I got the primes I wanted and I am ready for better glass and camera. A good image can be made with many brands , however some tech features to assist in focusing , selection of lenses, I find I want now and tired of conservative camera companies waiting to see what the people want, instead of giving it and pricing it affordable.... Maybe Nikon should pick a unknown photographer and show them why they should have a Nikon...

Plus Nikon has provided pictures of the camera's metal body framework from which is evidence that the camera is constructed to Nikon's industry-leading standards. So he has enough information to make a preliminary judgment.
