I know I've done watch modding videos before but I am at a point where I don't think I will do many more mods if any. Mainly because of the resale value hit. People interested in popular Seiko models prefer them unaltered.
I totally 💯 agree with you on this . Especially the point of if you’re not happy with the watch why buy it . The only modifications I’ve done on any of my Seiko’s was upgraded Marine Master clasp to my SBDC033 Blumo and my SSK003 blueberry.
I think you've given some compelling reasons for not modding watches. ChatGPT AI gives the following reasons for not modding watches: 1. Value preservation: Modifying a watch, especially a rare or valuable one, can significantly reduce its value. Collectors and watch enthusiasts place a high value on originality, and any modifications can detract from a watch's authenticity. 2. Warranty and service: Many watch manufacturers will void their warranty if a watch has been modified. Additionally, if a watch has been modified by an unauthorized person, it can be difficult to find a qualified watchmaker to service it. 3. Aesthetics: Modifying a watch can alter its appearance, which may not be desirable for everyone. While some modifications can enhance the look of a watch, others can make it appear gaudy or unappealing. 4. Functionality: Modifying a watch can also affect its functionality, such as its accuracy or water resistance. If the modifications are not done correctly, it can cause damage to the watch and decrease its reliability. 5. Historical significance: In some cases, a watch may have historical significance, and modifying it can alter or erase that history. It is important to preserve the original state of such watches to maintain their historical importance.
I've found that building a watch from scratch is more costly unless you source lower quality aliexpress type parts. There is a sense of satisfaction though, so that is why I at least built one.
I think the only case back I showed in the video was from my Seiko Samurai SRPH97. I bought it new. I avoid buying pre-owned from India or the Philippines as I can see some parts don't look OEM. Bezel insert for example. You can tell if not original because 12 o'clock lume pip is not recessed. Tons of those on eBay
