No matter what kick or 808 combination you are using, you need to EQ the frequencies regardless unless you are using a pre mixed sound that is already great quality. I wouldn't say don't do this, just make sure if you do then mix your kicks & 808's accordingly.
The master comes with some heat again! You know I had to disappear for a little at work to come watch this! 🤣 I'm sure I can speak for other when I say this, you the GOAT my guy! You explain everything so well and have helped me so much! 🙏💪
@@NavieD Maaan.. Ain't that true?! Lol. Wanted to straight take today off but was told I was really needed. Just got my KRK Rokit 5 G4's last night. I think they need me more. 🤣
I've watched a few of your videos before I finally subscribed. Super underrated. I think you probably make the best production tip videos on youtube. Super concise, actionable information with great use of examples. You've helped me out a lot so, seriously, thanks. I've only been producing for 2 years but I know I'm way better thanks to RU-vid and content creators like you that make it so much easier to learn.
I think you'd be great on a video showing us all the FL shortcuts like Alt + K You taught me about Ctrl + B and you cut my beat making process by 15 minutes which really helped.
Thanks man! Yeah people routinely ask me about sound selection, but it's really hard to talk explain in one RU-vid video. I do cover it in my course though
Great video as always. These are very important considerations to make, and they often get overlooked by newer engineers. However, I think the greatest thing about this video is how universal your first point is- That is to say, this philosophy could be applied to many different subgenres of hip-hop (ESPECIALLY lyrical hip hop where you need a lot of room for the vocals to breathe and shine through, as the lyrics are one of the most important aspects of more raw, underground, lyrical, substance driven hip hop). In trap, vocals are used more as an instrument. In more lyrical hip-hop (such as eastcoast/boombap), the rhyme scheme, vocabulary, and substance of the emcee's lyrics can often be more important than cadence and intonation.
Thank you Zub! Yeah, drums are always one of those things I forget about as well. I come up with the basic pattern and then move on, and don't revisit them during the arrangement process as much as I should
@@NavieD thanks for the transparency! Sometimes I feel like I’m just too lazy to invest the time in really good drum patterns. But I guess those are the struggles we all face 😂
I remember listening to some lofi I made two years ago. I instantly cringed at the out of key bass and the random supersaw I added. I have definitely improved
Any place i can listen to more of your music? Ive only found 3 albums plus the MFP soundtrack. The 'electronic' songs youve made (or whatever the proper genre they classify into is) are always SO so good!!
Imo we all should know how Jdilla made beats cuz it gives you freedom to make beats which doesn´t sound old drummachine patterns. If own Maschine the best way is just learn to play with fingers and don´t mind if hats are late or any drum parts. You can quantize kick and snares if you want. It maybe sounds to someone weird cuz there is market full of beats made suing only loops or just clicking mouse. I try to avoid trainlike beats which goes same way and are always on beat. Cheers. Good video man!
Thanks I really needed this I'm making my beats from bandlab since I don't have a laptop/computer. Just a beat maker trying to work with what I got and come up
common tips why beats sound like that 1:34 is bcuz almost everyone tells to beginners "make 808 first then put kick to top on 808 and probably add couple of kicks too. Don´t forget to sidechain cuz otherwise 808 eat up too much space from your beat"
As in push the bass note so it plays after the kick? The same issue would still persist, as it would sound like there are multiple kicks jumping up and down in your beat
I consider the whole trap-scene as a one big red flag nowadays. Everyone uses the same loops, same plugins and sample-packs (stolen for free from torrentsites) same drumpatterns, same hihat and percussion "tricks" and the list goes on and on. May the God have mercy on our souls.
I know I’m two years late but I’d love to hear Navie’s opinion on $crims production from $uicideboy$, because they do the exact opposite of some of these tips and make it work. They taught me that you actually can get away with having a lot of kicks in your loop, and fairly consistent 808s without overwhelming the listener if you do it correctly.
To all producers. If you work on mixing and developing what is called headroom. You don’t need to reduce the pattern to being minimal. If you’re a novice at mixing, then yes I’d keep it simple. More than anything I’d just say make sure your patters compliment each other. If you’re going crazy with 808’s keep the kick, snare and HH’s more relaxed.
