You want to make it really scary? Don't use Jumpscare sound effects, just make the scares happen subtly. Make the monster silently walk in front of the players vision, or silent appear behind them with maybe a slight glitch effect. Use creepy music to build up the atmosphere but don't use any loud scare noises.

Don’t use glitch effects ^ they make no sense. Unless the story explains why that happens, why is my eye messing up bc something happened? Make it TENSE. You could not even SHOW a monster or any kind of spooky scary entity or person and it could still be terrifying. I’ve seen games that didn’t have any kind of monster or scary thing come into view for the entire game and it was still actually terrifying. Then there’s the “real life” route. Something that can actually happen and/or does happen is always infinitely scarier than some weird monster someone drew up with some background. Some kidnapper stalking me and I kind of know it? Genuinely terrifying and awful. But you do whatever YOU feel is right and works. I wish you nothing but the best on ur adventure, good luck !! 🖤
