In today’s episode, Becket chats with Dr. Stephen Meyer about his book, “Return of the God Hypothesis: Three Scientific Discoveries That Reveal the Mind Behind the Universe.”
The New York Times bestselling author of “Darwin’s Doubt,” Stephen Meyer, presents groundbreaking scientific evidence of the existence of God, based on breakthroughs in physics, cosmology, and biology.
Beginning in the late 19th century, many intellectuals began to insist that scientific knowledge conflicts with traditional theistic belief-that science and belief in God are “at war.” Philosopher of science Stephen Meyer challenges this view by examining three scientific discoveries with decidedly theistic implications. Building on the case for the intelligent design of life that he developed in Signature in the Cell and Darwin’s Doubt, Meyer demonstrates how discoveries in cosmology and physics coupled with those in biology help to establish the identity of the designing intelligence behind life and the universe.
Meyer argues that theism-with its affirmation of a transcendent, intelligent and active creator-best explains the evidence we have concerning biological and cosmological origins. Previously Meyer refrained from attempting to answer questions about “who” might have designed life. Now he provides an evidence-based answer to perhaps the ultimate mystery of the universe. In so doing, he reveals a stunning conclusion: the data support not just the existence of an intelligent designer of some kind-but the existence of a personal God.

ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from college, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

So call God by His name...? Why insult God by saying it was "Intelligent Design..." as it seem Meyers is doing here? Oh ya, that spiritual butler to server me...? I struggle when we read Christ in the Sermon on the Mount, i.e. "Let your yes be yes and you no, be no..." So why do those asserting Intelligent Design not straight up say it is God, all God, that we are nothing except for God...? That is one reason it seems why those don't want to give Jesus credit for having created everything.. This is one side of the problem, the other side of the problem those who need proof in order to believe will only beleive if one is given proof... But doesn't this go away from Faith, or you know "Without faith it is impossible to please God." And now the real crux of the problem? Science is only something which is observable and/or repeatable. Or that science means "with knowledge" and from a Christian view where we have a problem..? Science relies on man's wizDUMB, in contrast the Bible says "Lean not on your own understanding, but in *ALL* thing acknowlege God. Science at best only relies on man's knowledge...

There is no opposition here. God chose Dr. Meyer to write this book. God chose for Meyer to glorify Him through this work. This means that God chose Dr. Meyer to receive credit, so that, it would go back to God. There is no reason to put these things in tension.
@dand4485
@dand4485 8 месяцев назад
@@michaelparsons3007 There is no way unless you are God to say God chose dr. Meyers to write the book. I guess satan if anything is purporting a lie, easy to see one supporting a lie to say, "no reason to have tension..." If one will contend for the truth/faith of Christianity there is always tension to defend the truth, as there is a spiritual war raging until God puts an end to sin... So if you see no tension, which camp are you in?

Even though we see "From faith to faith the just shall live by faith..." Isn't "Intelligent Design" a "crafty" way to say God didn't "Create" everything as we read in Genesis 1 & 2? Seems troubeling to when we read Christ saying "Let your 'yes' be 'yes' and your 'no' be 'no'"? Oh and when i say "crafty" in a Biblical sense... Crafty is typically used only to describe satan as we read: Gen 3:1) Now the serpent was more crafty (subtle, skilled in deceit) than any living creature of the field which the Lord God had made. And the serpent (Satan) said to the woman, “Can it really be that God has said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” One either has faith in God.... Because. Or they don't...? Isn't "Inteligent Design" in opposition with the Bible? i.e. Pro 3:5) Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6) In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. 7) Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and turn away from evil. 8) It will be healing to your body And refreshment to your bones. Seems many want to believe only if it can be proven. Then again Pro 3:5 what is "in all your heart" means . And one think now a days we think of the heart as 'feeling and emotion", true, but in the Jewish mind at the time when the Bible was written "In ou heart" would be how one thinks...

I am in awe, too. In fact, it's what we KNOW that points to a transcendend, intelligent and personal Creator ❤ Science has revealed: Mathematics is the language of physics, DNA (among other things) is the language of biology. The genetic code is a digital code like software, as even Dawkins admit. The words in the New Testament "In the beginning was the word" makes incredibly much sense.

@@Maranatha-rk7lh There is no "digital code" in DNA. There's no code at all. That's just something Stephen Myer made up to trick Christians into moving from Creationism to faux-science. I was unaware we could approach our prayers in that manner. Your revelation taught me a lot of how to write my own prayers in a humble faithful, manner and to lay out the details with such clarity but giving Him All the glory. The problem is your lack of your understanding. Two possibilities… cyclical model where essentially the universe is external (our physics currently cannot get back to the very beginning of the universe but rather to a fraction of a second of it…the math breaks down….so we use time 0 with the Big Bang as that is as close as we can get to the beginning currently so we start there) and the Big Bang represent a phase transition event of the current eternal universe. This view is currently in the minority. The majority view is called inflation….what banged in the Big Bang is called inflation. The data that supports this is pretty powerful supported by observational evidence and why it is currently the favored view. The kicker is when we look at the nature of inflation it comes with an unusual appendage attached to it….inflation once started never stops. So as inflation decreases in one region of space it starts up in another and whether one likes it or not the appendage of inflation results in innumerable universes coming into existence. Granted…we can’t yet verify if these other universes exist but what we do know is if inflation is correct a plethora of universes will in all likelihood be true. The neat thing is we have a lot of collaborating evidence that inflation has a good chance of being the correct model….thus as inflation becomes verifiably correct…the resulting nature of other universes must follow. We don’t dream up multiple universe because heck why not but rather that is where the math and science leads us to be so. Whether this proves or disproves a divine being I simply I don’t know …but I do know when you say we have no evidence to support the possibility of a multi verse is incorrect once one understands what inflation is….and the lines of evidence that support it.

Just to point out a very common misconception science does nothing, but Scientists can and do tell lies. The scientific method came from the Bible. We are all instructed to put everything to the test and hold fast to that which is good. That's the scientific method. It's amazing how many atheists put their faith in science (their idol! can't speak, see, hear, think...) but we must make allowances for atheists because by their own admission they are not intelligently designed.

Have you ever had Dr. James Tour on your show? I have watched Dr. Berlinski and Dr. Meyer before in videos. I also love Dr. Lennox. They are all great scientists. But my favorite is Dr. Tour.

Thankyou, thankyou Becket for having Stephen Meyer on your show and allowing him so much space to articulate scientific theories so understandably. This really helps me feel more secure for arguments that I might come up against regarding a Creator. Thanks for letting God work through you.

I had talked to my 9-year-old son about the multiverse theory. I think he kind of debunked it. He was talking about it with his friend in the back of the car and he said, if the multiverse means all outcomes are possible, then one of the outcomes would have been something that caused the destruction of all universes, but since we are still here then there probably isn't a multiverse. (It was a proud moment for me.) I have a hard time around that logic. The only real pushback I get from some people online is that if all outcomes are possible then one of the universes would have survived. To meet that is cheating - since it disallows the existence of the possible outcome I suggested, and it does so only because it would prove them wrong otherwise.
@user-gy1pu3gq3d
@user-gy1pu3gq3d 7 месяцев назад
I don't believe the multiverse theory, but this is not a debunking of it. The problem with the theory is it cannot be debunked, thus it is not a scientific theory in the way that gravity is. The naturalist explanation of the origin of our universe requires a universe generating mechanism (UGM). The argument goes that a natural UGM (as opposed to a creator) is always creating universes, but the physical parameters must be just so to make a stable universe, thus 99+% of attempts end in failure. Ours ended in a success. The UGM does not act on a universe once it is created, so the UGM wouldn't delete or destroy a universe. This "all outcomes are possible" view of a multiverse is popular fiction for TV shows, not a view that scientists hold.
@VanilliHammer
@VanilliHammer 7 месяцев назад
@@user-gy1pu3gq3d Maybe debunked is the wrong word. I'll go with "strong evidence against" it since the destruction of the UGM is also a possibility - and one that should have already ocurred. I don't understand how "all outcomes are possible" is not a necessary conclusion if there are infinite universes. I thought it was like Shakespeare from Monkeys. An infinite number of universes, with an infinite set of physical rules, with an infinite time frame will yield all possibilities - will it not? I thought that was kind of the whole point of the theory - otherwise, the fine-tuning seen in our universe would suggest a creator.
@user-gy1pu3gq3d
@user-gy1pu3gq3d 7 месяцев назад
@@VanilliHammer 39:43. This is Meyer's argument for the prevailing naturalist (non-design) view. They postulate the existence of a UGM that pops out universes with particular values of some set of physical constants. The probability that the UGM generates a set of physical constants that yields a stable universe (like ours) is extremely low, so the way around this is to say that the UGM is constantly generating universes with different sets of values for the physical constants and every so often it gets lucky and generates a stable universe. There is no reason that this UGM should have the ability to destroy universes nor do we have any indication at what rate these universes are generated. I am not a UGM proponent and neither is Meyer. Not because a UGM is an implausible explanation for our universe but because, as Meyer says, it adds another layer of abstraction that still requires fine-tuning. So our universe is fine-tuned by the creator (Meyer's view) or the UGM handles the fine-tuning, but that too requires fine-tuning (in order for the probabilities to work in favor of generating a universe like ours), so the UGM doesn't have any explanatory power. UGM doesn't postulate the existence of infinite universes. It postulates the existence of a large number of universes. Even if the UGM did cycle through the infinite combinations of physical constants, it still wouldn't mean the deletion of universes. Use your thought experiment of the monkeys at typewriters. The output these monkeys generate is constrained by the characters on the typewriter. If the typewriter has our standard keyboard, then the monkeys cannot write literature in any non-Latin language, so they can only generate that which can be generated. Same for the UGM.

I love this! I don’t understand physics but could always see that studying any part of nature clearly and obviously reveals an intelligent designer (so I went on to study biology). Even before I was a Christian. When I noticed that some thought science and faith were in opposition, I was surprised and thought it was absurd.

I’m so glad for academics that God in His grace would increase such knowledge. However ultimately it’s the Holy Spirit that gives revelation. My dad used to say facts will never convince an unbeliever to believe God and the existence of no facts would not cause a believer to abandon his belief. People do abandon their faith but it’s usually out of disappointment 😢 PS this academic stuff goes over my head lol😅

Hi Becket, love your show and really appreciate your ministry and your testimony has been so encouraging. I had a question if you see this comment for you. When and under what circumstances were you water baptized after you came to faith in Jesus? I was questioned by my pastor who very much believes you are not forgiven of sins until water baptism and I was sharing your powerful testimony. He stated he would not share your information or reference you due to concern over the baptism issue. I did not agree and indicted that I was sure your had been baptized subsequent to accepting Jesus as Lord and savior. He challenged me to reach out to you and find out. Hope you see this and will give me a quick run down on this part of your faith walk. God bless you and thanks so much for all you do 🙂

1:02:13 Doesn't the relatively small distance from the inner planets to the Sun debunk the theories of dark matter and energy, ie , not enough space fabric to equal the Suns pull and if there were somehow equal energy in that limited space, wouldnt outer planets be violently repelled given the amount of space between them and the Sun. Or , do the lawless ones posit the inadequate space is energized by the Sun thereby achieving the balance?
