I'm 56 years old, I really wish we'd had the internet and videas like this when I was about 20. It's great to see these topics thought about and discussed, not only thought provoking but also life affirming.

@ilinemanja6060

I don't agree. The largest part of my generation is not able to simply do nothing and think about philosophical topics. This is mostly because we don't know life without internet. We don't learn wise lessons from our grandpas and other family members anymore. Everything comes from the internet... It tears families apart. But that's just my opinion as a generation z person.

It is funny to watch how young people are messing up their life even more despite having all this help and the how tos and the chance to look everything up on the internet. The internet is the most reliable place if you want bad influence as a teenager!
@altenberg-greifenstein
@altenberg-greifenstein 3 года назад
@@ilinemanja6060 Exactly. The internet teaches you that your family sucks, doesnt do enough for you, and that your parents are abusive, no matter what they are doing, and that the older generations are dumb af, to be ridiculed, and that they are to blame for everything, because all they are is greedy and uncaring, and that the solution to your parents not doing what you want is to stop contact, unless you go for the things cost money and i dont want to work way of life, because then you have to put up with your abusive parents until you are 35 and tell people on the internet how much you hate them and that they deserve to die when you ran out of your favorite food because that wh_re, aka mom, did not go grocery shopping fast enough to replace it. How often I heard that from those who chose to freeload. Older people thinking that younger people are learning useful stuff off the internet just shows how they are using the internet. (Not really, because a lot of older people do not make good use of the internet too) You cant draw conclusions about others just because you are like that. Anyway, I dont know anyone age 20 who is saying nice things about their parents when they dont listen. Add in the amount of hate speech being normalized through the internet and you know I am telling the truth. I forgot to add that the internet shows teenagers perverted porn to normalize that, and that they either better be beautiful af or they are garbage who better starts crying over all the mental illnesses they deserve because they are ugly. Add in drugs are cool, love means cheating, and being straight is nasty, and you know why the young ones are the way they are. The internet is just that huge network of peer pressure getting even the ones who have zero friends.

Date anecdote: It was my boyfriend’s and I’s first date. Except we hadn’t officially called it date. So we go to a brewery and get a couple beers. I hadn’t eaten yet and I get very tipsy very quickly on an empty stomach. The date was going great so far. He was being a perfect gentleman. So we go to get food, and I’m just feeling the alcohol more and more. I never feel braver and more bold when I’ve had alcohol. At the particular restaurant we were at if you wanted a noodle bowl you have to go and pick out your toppings, and then give it to the line of chefs to make for you. I didn’t know that. So I drunkenly take my bowl of toppings back to the table with me- I also have no idea how much time has passed. My boyfriend was very patiently waiting (and as I would find out later) wondering why I had brought back the bowl of toppings. Apparently about 30 minutes had passed...and drunk me is sitting there wondering why I don’t have food yet. The waitress very kindly explained to me that I needed to bring my bowl up to the chefs... I had my “aha” moment. Followed by “gawd I’m such an idiot.” So we finally get our food. We’re having great back and forth banter and in my drunken bravery I blurt out “YOU DIDN’T EVEN HAVE THE GUTS TO CALL THIS A DATE!” He’s taken a back for a moment. Before he gets this big goofy grin on his face and goes “So this IS a date!”. I blurt back “OBVIOUSLY, we were talking about how nicely we would dress!”. So now almost 2 hours into our not official date it is officially a date. I finally sober up a bit and want ice cream before we go see our movie. I hadn’t kept an eye on the time and we only had a couple minutes before the movie starts. I’m thinking “Oh shit” So I deep throat my icecream in front of him, not thinking about how much of a dork I probably looking like shoving icecream down my throat. He just looked at me affectionately and went “That was kind of hot.” The movie was great, and we decided to end the night with a walk. He had wanted to take me to this park that he loved. He said there was a surprise. So we walk out to this very lovely park with a pond. He gets really quiet for a moment and goes..well this was supposed to be more special. Apparently the pond was usually lit up with lights and fountains, and he had wanted to show me that. But they weren’t tonight. He sheepishly tried to brush it off and went “This never happened. Just pretend there were lights and everything was perfect.” I say back “I think its very sweet- even there weren’t lights.” He goes “I have no idea what you’re talking about, there were totally lights and fountains and everything was perfect.” To me everything was. It was great night, and I liked him so much more because I was awkward and a bit of an airhead- and he NEVER made me feel uncomfortable about it. I felt comfortable being myself around him- and what shocked me he ACTUALLY liked myself. Morale of the story is go out with someone who makes you can be yourself around and loves you for it. No matter how big of a dope you are. I loved our first date. It was imperfect and awkward. We were accepting of each others quirks, and love the fact that we’re both kind of weird. Its probably why still over a year a later we’re still together.

i love how he used the word “changing” instead of “changed.” like he’s currently evolving, he’s learning, and this isnt a one and done thing. i personally find myself comparing myself and idolizing self-help youtubers, forgetting that they’re trying everyday and they’ve not “reached enlightenment and perfectness” per se. they’re sharing knowledge, but not because they’re the epitome of it- but because it’s something they work on every single day. but they are pretty damn wise. -------------- NOTES: - “tell me who you spend time with, and i’ll tell you who you are” 1) “people will forget what you said. people will forget when you did. but people will never forget how you made them feel.” - “without intent, content is empty” 2) stay in your lane - it’s a massive waste of time to try to change others (and it’s not your job) - unless someone is asking for it, my time and energy is best invested in myself - the most influential people focus entirely on putting out an amazing example, not trying to change others - less tension when you stop telling people how to live their life 3) the most important relationship in your life is the one you have with yourself - “i can only be open to other people to the extent to which i am open to myself” - “i am less destructive and capable of greater generosity when i feel solid- when i take care of myself”

That's a great point, and thank you for the write-up! I think they/we all share a profound openness to the world around, and figuring out how to be better versions of ourselves and enjoy life more. We're all on separate journeys that will require different experiences that lead us to a range of outcomes. I think the best thing to do is just honor that journey and find meaning in it, because to find meaning is to find everything.

Awkward date anecdote: So when I fifteen or so I went on a date with my friend's cousin. We had been texting for a while and were going to see a movie. Coincidentally it had just been my birthday. So this nice guy had brought me a card with red roses on it and a little message. I was a bit spaced out and it took me far too long to read the card, so I kind of never finished reading it? I don't know how that happened... i was mostly worrying about talking too much time reading it, which is ridiculous, but as a fifteen year old I was having these thoughts, lovely. So we get our tickets a stand in line for snacks. I never really take snacks when going to the cinema. But this guy was asking whether I wanted this or that. I said no to all of it. So we watch the movie and have some very uncomfortable not very stimulating conversations. Afterwards, we walk back to where he has to take the bus. And again, I point to an ice cream shop, he asks me whether I would like an ice cream. And I am there thinking: do I really sound like I am fishing for food? So... the date was uncomfortable, but I have seldom felt more uncomfortable as when I actually read the whole birthday card he gave me when I came home. "Happy birth day! As a present I would like to buy you 1 or more snacks!" *face palm* so lesson learned: don't think so much about what other people are thinking, it will interfere with who you are. You cannot live your life depending on what you THINK they expect or want. I am now dating another friend's cousin. so all good. ;) (really sound like I am fishing for cousin's)

Agree with the third point. At the age of 23 I'm yet to have a relationship, purely because I don't think I can truly love somebody until I love myself. It's been a long path, but I'm definitely getting there. Largely due to self-consciousness, I care too much about what people think of me. Hopefully, I'll get to a stage in my personal development and career that I'll feel comfortable meeting somebody. Everything happens for a reason I suppose.

One of the best pieces of advice I got was this question "When you look at a pregnant teenage girl, what are your thoughts?" For years, I would see this and instantly think the worst and most nasty things. *Oh how awful of her, how irresponsible* *That's shocking she's ruined her life* *I would never do that* etc... Like, I would project so much nasty and mean spirited energy but the truth is, I have no idea what that person has gone through, perhaps she was a victim and has made a choice to keep the baby, maybe she's having a baby for someone who can't have one, maybe she's from a very conservative family and she is living her best life- who knows? You have no idea what someone's story is... But, the point was that I was just spewing out negativity without realising, this really made me check myself and what energy I give off, now I'm a lot more positive and have changed my way of thinking

Something I’ve been doing recently is this: whenever there is something that I think that I should get done, I do said things immediately, right after I think about it. Sometimes I only just start and then take a break but that’s better than nothing. I’ve found that for me it’s about getting the ball rolling one step at a time. I used to worry so much about planning and making time for work and scheduling etc, now I’ve decided to let that go a bit and allow myself to be spontaneous with my life. It’s helped. I hope maybe this can inspire someone to try the same

I find that a good way to manage these 'things I should get done' is to write them down on a piece of paper the day prior. Then the next morning you check your list and start doing the first thing on it without thinking. This way you don't just rely on your mind for 'remembering' you have to do something, but now you have a structured to-do list every day.

What is changing my life right now: every time when I feel overwhelmed, or sad or not enough, I step away from all social media, YT videos, and Netflix, which used to be my go-to coping mechanism for sadness, to escape the real world. And instead I JUMP into the real world. When I feel like my friends don't care about me, I reach out to hang out. When I feel so overwhelmed my head hurts I go on a walk, sometimes I even walk to the next village over. And it's honestly changed my life in so many ways. Also, I totally agree that having a good relationship with yourself is the most important! When I liked myself far less, I had far fewer friendships, I was lonely and miserable. Learning to love myself has allowed me to live my life like I couldn't before. Thank you for videos like these!

" I can only be open to people to the extent to which I'm open to myself" I find that's true for some, but for me it's the furthest thing from truth and this puzzles me a lot. I do A LOT of self reflection and I have been journaling for three years writing down and analyzing every single one of my emotions and yet I find it extremely hard to let people see my inner, most profound self. I find it so hard that I can say no one truly knows me, and it's all my fault, but at the same time it feels like there's a glass wall that lets me observe and appreciate other people from a distance without being able to truly open up. What you do on your channel, the way you talk about your thoughts and how you feel, I think it's extremely brave. Thanks
@jayroshal9571
@jayroshal9571 3 года назад
To be honest. Its a process. Its so hard to fully encapsulate your thoughts, emotions and reflections and to be responsive in a clear and cohesive manner. I think the best we can do is create a focal point within your conscious mind to tap into and expand on those. We have to divide and conquer some of the most intriguing or thought provoking emotions. If I follow every thought that could possibly be remotely interesting for further expansion and dissection; it would be like looking for a needle in a hay stack. That phrase is a cliche. Anyhow, I think being aware of emotions is a great place to start understanding and managing yourself. Its not overburdening and its not counter productive in the long run. Personally, I see more damage from people who are instinctively reactive and say things that are very superficial and unnecessary. It lacks reasoning or compassion. It is painstakingly obvious when we encounter such beings; especially from the vantage point of someone who is reflective of their own inner engineering. In fact, I think the more reflective we are about our thoughts and emotions; we create a great platform emotionally in terms of emotional intelligence. The most difficult aspect about human interaction is that people don't invest enough time in analyzing their own emotions. Thank you for this channel and everyone who ponders a thought. It really does make the world a better place. I love it.

Oh, now that I've heard the whole video: I love Alan Watts too! And here's my relationship story: I'm trying to make more girlfriends around my city, because I am usually surrounded by male friends and acquaintances. One time I was walking around with my camera and I saw another girl with a camera. I planned a nice conversation in my head and when she got near enough I said "Hey, are you taking photos too?" She looked terrified. 🤦‍♀️ I tried to explain that I want to make friends and also take pictures, to which she looked around and started running in the easiest direction. That was super embarrassing, but by far not the only time this happened. It's very hard to stop people who are on a *mission* in their tracks and try to talk to them. Best success so far is meeting people in cafès, classes, or if they are sitting down. I'm not afraid to try again and again, though. We are just the same, it should be normal to speak to strangers on the street. 🤗

Whenever I come from this perspective, thinking that this person will be me (even though it can take a lot of energy!), I become more kind and stop projecting my expectiations on others. So, I just kept looking back on my right side, trying to find the bar until I hit my face fully-on on a metal lamp post. I ended up spending that night in the ER doing CT scans of my brain and the funniest part is, she confused the streets and there was no bar in the first place.

The most memorable date ever was with a girl at a Rollingstones’ concert. She liked this other guy that was supposed to show up but didn’t. So I would have been a third wheel. He didn’t show so it was just she and myself. I was nervous. “ I wonder what happened to Brandon?”, she asked. Heck I didn’t care because she caught me eye in that 3rd wheel string of pearls triangle. The concert started and we sang without the other guy there. She was bummed. But I was cheesing inside because I got to accidentally go on a date with someone I adored. It rained that evening at the Voodoo concert at Texas Stadium. I mean, it poured that evening at the Voodoo concert at Texas Stadium. And I had bought and wore a brown suede jacket. But I was happy! And to top it off, we held hands throughout some of the songs and during the walk back to our cars. Odd night. Fun night. And bittersweet because she talked about him not showing which returned me back to reality. That was almost 30 ago.

Okay so to start this date anecdote I must say, I wasn’t supposed to be going on a date. It was freshman year in high school ( I am now a freshman in college) and I had asked one of my guy friends if he wanted to go to the movies. He said yes, we both got dropped off by our parents, he arrived before me and he did something that I never expected. He paid for our tickets! It was so sweet to at the time and even now I think about it because it never happed to me before even on planned dates and I was so taken back by it I really didn’t know how to act on the rest of the “date”. This turned into a make out during the last half of the movies and to this day I still haven’t seen the end of Passengers.

The thing about lesson number two is also to recognize why you are so adamant about changing someone. I still fall into the trap of trying to change my family to little or to no avail. It's a let down every time and I'm left feeling misunderstood and frustrated. Then when I remember to take a step back, I realize I don't necessarily want to change them for their own benefit, but to create a space for myself to fit into better, to be heard better. "It's what worked for me, it has to work for them." - but people are different and maybe they will come to those same conclusions you were advocating for and when that happens you'll be happy to help them out. And maybe they never will and that has to be okay (except if they are being truly hurtful, then of course find a way to explain to them why it is hurtful and why it's better to stop). There are other people that will see me and hear me and that I will hear and see much better myself and it's energy better spent showing gratitude for those people rather than trying to change someone who won't budge.

This style of video was a lot more grounded and closer 2 reality for most of us I guess. I love the deep philosophical type of videos where u go out and show all the beauty of the world in your personal style (which is gorgeous to experience btw). For me personally. Every evening I write down the beautiful things of the day. It varies between 2-5 beautiful things most of the time. And the Concentrated shots you used in your videos were so carefully chosen. Like the "stay in your lane" one with the forest in the background and this one clear street with a turn in the unknown. This density has a lot more power and less chance of overwhelming me personally. Enjoy exploring Nath and thank you for being 🌟

When you said “It is a waste of time to try and change other people” that really relates to me now. I’ve been trying to learn this the last few years incorporating where to pick my “fights” as in is this something I can fix with my time and tools I’ve got, if not my time is better spent else where.

Dating anecdote because you asked for it: We were supposed to watch “Me Before You” but I was running late and based on my ETA, the movie that was to be screened close to my ETA was “Finding Dory”. It was embarrassing at first but we watched Finding Dory and then watched the last full show for Me Before You on that same day. Oh I guess it didn’t go so bad. But thanks for sharing your story and the three gems you’ve also just shared :)

I’m actually just mesmerized by the amazing “broll” or stock footage throughout this video. Honestly a good lesson for myself, trying to imagine this video with no footage other than just Nathaniel addressing the camera only.

You can't change other people just as other people can't change you. Lasting change comes from within, based on a strong determination. Other people can't create that. They can inspire you and teach you, though.
