It is more about deescalating. If the attacker does not get hurt and you just avoid the attacks, actually even without doing any techniques, he might just get tired or frustrated and leave. And he has less motivation for any revenge.

Well done. I'm getting weaker and older each year so in the last couple unprovoked attacks by thugs I let my revolver aimed at center mass speak for me quite eloquently but lessons noted and realize a sidearm isn't available for a lot of the world. Stay safe.

If you've had more than two attacks by "thugs", it's obviously not unprovoked. I've lived in two different extremely crime-ridden areas, and I had to walk the streets everyday not once did I ever get attacked by "thugs". Just the fact that you refer to them as "thugs" is a little bit of a Freudian slip.

Thank you for posting this video. I have practiced three different martial arts, but I still find it very useful to know 2 or 3 effective strikes / moves and become as proficient at them as you can. When something happens in the real world (outside of the dojo) you want as natural of a reaction as possible to stop the attack. What I don't agree with (my opinion, I'm not saying anyone is wrong, you have to do what you feel is right) is the "I don't want to hurt them" approach. You state this towards the beginning of the video, and you also use the phrase "nice and gentle" when describing the throat strike. You even change your wording about half way through the video (about the 3:30 mark) when you state "another thing that will save your life is the kick in the nuts!". The key phrase is "save your life". If you feel your life is in danger, why are you going to be worried about hurting the attacker, gently striking him? It is a different story if it is a family member or someone you know, but if you are attacked out in public by someone you have never met, and they are obviously trying to seriously hurt you, I'm sorry but I am not going for the "kinder, gentler" method.
@mikado728
@mikado728 Год назад
Agreed. This fellow is so much fragile white okey-dokey you don't really have to know much about what you're doing to kill somebody hit him in the throat... and if somebody comes out you to hurt you if you're not attacking the attacker to beat him down till he stops twitching you're probably not gonna survive.

To be completely truthful, in a real self-defense situation I never did, nor will I ever, take care not to hurt an attacker or attackers. In fact, I will hurt and at least injure any attacker. Years ago I gave a lot of self-defense courses for women. I definitely taught them to hurt any attacker.

If it isn't just some bully or someone coming to permanently hurt you, kill you or coming at you with full intent or aggression just immobilise them with a choke or hit a a sensitive area quickly, but if not, and they're coming bloodthirsty, you have no chance to win if you don't do that same. If you get a punch in, keep i until they pass out, if you're constantly attacked, you'll get hurt anyways so charge in and knock them out

Points to remember first. 1/ No one is to big to run away from. 2/ It hurts even more the day after. 3/ Only If you have absolutely no chance of escape should hit him first. 4/ If you do have to take action, it has to be a 100% explosive effort. 5/ Forget body punches or wrestling on the floor, it's nose, throat and eyes and then leave quickly. 6/ Fear can be you friend because you can turn it easily into instant aggression. I must be the mildest guy in town but when a giant of a chap once put me in this situation, I was even more surprised than him when he was the one left screaming on the floor.

A very positive approach to dealing with a potentially big problem: How to protect yourself 'within' the law... One of the most critical aspects of any self-defense technique (including Aikido) is developing self-confidence. Too many nominally 'gentle-natured' people have a problem with this, since self-confidence is the entry-level 'key' for most locks. Aikido helps develop the necessary confidence to put superb techniques such as these demonstrated by Akidoflow. Self-confidence also (importantly) helps a person deal with the all-important problem of ego, since ego (unreasonably) often demands that a response be forceful beyond that which is absolutely necessary to resolve a threat. Just this 1.5 minute video is a valuable start in the right direction! I speak as a constitutionally 'gentle' individual who has always been troubled by needless violence. PS: I am absolutely convinced that ALL children should take some form of the martial arts at the earliest age possible, and Aikido is a wonderful way to start! We live in an increasingly violent age but there is no mandate that says we must be victims, despite a firm belief in cultivating and promoting the essential 'goodness' of humanity. As the Russians put it: "Trust, but VERIFY."

Too many of the comments ask why you should care about hurting your opponent "too much." I think that the level you need to hurt them will depend on the opponent, and the situation, and you can use your judgment. I was taught: "Talk your way out of a fight. If you can't talk your way out of a fight, walk your way out of a fight. If you can't walk your way out of a fight, run your way out of a fight. If you cannot even run away from a fight, then kill them." However, after being taught those lines, we were quickly told the following addendum: Kill the Fight. Often when there is a person being aggressive, if you can do a hip throw and they are now prone on their back after flying ass over teakettle, they might very well decide not to go any further. And that need not hurt them at all, just send them spinning. Especially if there was alcohol involved. People might be more aggressive than they would be otherwise and a simple move to show them how bad it would be for them to try again is often all it takes. You just killed the fight. Now you do not need to stand there waiting to see if the fight revives itself---you can try to leave. If you need to do more, if those do not stop them, or if there is a group, then by all means lay them out. But I agree 100% with the sentiments in this video---no need to ruin someone's life for one instance of bad decisions. Give them a chance to change their mind.

Loved the initial convo about using only as much force as necessary- a very important lesson. The frontal strike to the throat- also good stuff. But I'm going to call bullshit on the pinch to the back of the arm. I had someone do this in an amateur MMA fight where i had the dude in like a side/rear choke type situation which i was struggling to get sunk deep. The guy tried this method to make me release- held onto it for 90 seconds with all his might as we grappled. It left hideous marks on my arm that were there for months- but didn't make me even come close to releasing. When you do submission moves you have to learn to take the pain that comes with that type of fighting. This move will NOT work on someone with the heart of a fighter. You need to shut them down, not cause superficial pain to win fights or one day your going to get the surprise of your life when it doesn't phase your opponent

They were right! Anyone who attacks, unprovoked, deserves all the pain and misery you can dish out to them. Maybe that'll drill some sense into their thick skulls, and save other from getting mugged or even killed. Bullies fear only one thing, and that's being on the receiving end. Do it, and do it hard. One of my favorite martial arts strike combinations designed to stop an opponent's attack which I like is a fast shuffle toward your opponent to (#1) strike with a backfist directly on his nose. As you retract that strike by simply curling your forearm back toward your shoulder, turn your hand over and (#2) strike with the knuckles as shown in this video directly to the Adam's apple in the throat. Use as much force as you can on both strikes so as to break the nose and crush the windpipe, if possible. This should stun the attacker enough for you to make a new (#3) strike that consists of grabbing his head with the palm of each hand to prevent him from jerking his head away. Once you control his head, push each thumb into his eyeballs for a couple seconds. Then use both hands holding the head to PUSH OFF the attacker as hard as you can so that you can make a safe exit. If this sounds violent and forceful, it is. But in a world where attackers may be physically stronger than you or their ability to feel pain has been diminished by drug use, it pays to attack with as much force as you can so as to stop the threat to your safety as fast as possible and to incapacitate the attacker long enough for you to safely escape. None of those strikes are likely to kill any attacker but all of them together should effectively stop the attack.

None of these millions of examples of "self defence do-this-and-then-do-that-stuff" will EVER work, if you have not the right inner attitude, emotional stability and a clear mind about whats happening. The absence of this inner attitude makes the outer form(the technique) absolute senseless. If you don't work on you fears, your breathing, your inner calmness.....I saw so many guys beating up some brutal looking tatooed hard acting dude who looked 1000 times stronger. And I saw a lot of guys losing a fight before it even began, because they were full of fear. It's not about the outer strength - it's the inner strenght that matters. And THEN comes the technique. And - you may laugh at me or think that I am an idiot - I don't care...I'll tell you the inner secret of Aikido: It's EMBRACING your opponent calmly with an attidute, as if you'd love him. I was practicing Aikido for many years and learned all the techniques perfectly and by heart. But I made no progress from that point on anymore....It took me 3 more years to realize, that it's just all about that. If someone attacks you: Think of the attacker as if your beloved son would try to hurt you...the only interest that you'd have in such a situation is to stop this violence and to come back to piece again without hurting anybody.....When I started practicing my techniques with exactly this inner attidute everything in my Aikido changed. My moves became minimalistic, relaxed, with little force, I did only what was neccessary to stop the conflict AND: The techniques became very powerful all of a sudden. I couldn't believe it. When I was younger I never believed in such things. I laughed and made jokes about Aikidoka talking about "love" and similar topics. But it's like with children: TELLING about them and learning about them don't make you KNOW! You'll never KNOW as long as you don't make experience with your own children. Only those who practice love know that it really works.

I don't normally down vote any video. You are showing techniques that will cause damage to the individual trying to perform them. Striking with the thumb and forefinger spread, will more than likely cause damage to the tendons of the thumb. People move during conflicts, you are going to miss the target. Making your middle knuckle protrude, in an unnatural way, will cause damage if a hard bone is hit. Self defense, should be based on a more natural method, not on some contrived misinformation.

Robert, the man is correct. In North America, western Europe, Australia, et al, the legal laws regarding lawful self-defense are very strict because the law considers the victim a law-abiding citizen. This means, the law expects the law-abiding citizen to conduct his/her self-defense within legally established limitations and parameters. Go outside of those legal limitations and you become the criminal. This needs to be taught to every law-abiding citizen seeking effective self-defense but will not put him into jail or liable for civil lawsuits.

Where I come from there is the not uncommon story of the one punch retaliation knockout that drops the assailant, who then cracks their head on the pavement and goes into a coma. Bam! One punch and defender is charged with aggravated assault, which carries mandatory prison time.

I'm unable to get any guy interested in talking about the legal aspects, responsibilities, and consequences of self-defense. I get blank looks, stares of disbelief, whatnot. The typical response I get is what you see here on this RU-vid thread: "I don't care...I'm going to do whatever I have to do to protect myself and if I have to I'm going to kill the guy." Everyone regards my concern for the legal consequences in the courts as being too afraid to defend myself. They may not be far from the truth. There's so much legal consequences that can land me in jail or civil court that I wonder if the Law prefers I just stand there and take my beating then summon the police afterwards, if I'm still alive and able. Heaven knows, there are some ultra-liberals here in the US who believe that self-defense is simply adding to the violence and the law-abiding citizen has only the right to call the police after a crime committed on their person. Clearly these ultra liberal politicians who make the laws have never had a violent crime committed upon themselves nor any of their loved ones. The story goes, when it does happen, they turn into pro-self defense conservatives.
@XXXX-yc6wv

@@jeffyoung60 when faced with the legal ramifications of use of force, I think most folks are deluded into some sort of ubermensch or superhero conceit of themselves, whereby they believe they are totally justified in the use of any level of force they choose and the rest of humanity will understand that and be on their side. As the commenter above says "[I'll] allow the jury to decide." Putting your future in the hands of a jury or judge is the stupidest course of action possible. Talk to any attorney and you'll find out that a judge or jury finding in one's favor at trial is a total gamble, with odds stacked heavily against a win (not to mention the damage incurred by the huge costs, time and stress involved).
