I'm dating a spanish lady who doesn't speak english and I don't speak spanish. Its frustrating at times trying to understand her. I'm trying to learn spanish, help please
@nancynieman9595
@nancynieman9595 4 года назад
Tip: (55 years of teaching Spanish). DON'T Stop when you hear a word you do not understand. Keep listening to the whole sentence.( In English we often leave a word out but are still understood and don't even realize there was a word missing.) But if you dwell on one word you will miss the rest of the sentence. If you continue to listen you will get the some sense of what is being said. The lost word may even pop into place. But if you stop and do not continue to actively listen you lose a lot more than one word; you lose the rest of the sentence, and maybe the next one. You lose what they are even still talking abut. At first it is much more difficult to understand a conversation between two or more natives. It is difficult to keep active listening. You tend to drift off. But make an effort to really listen for those words you do know. With time you will recognize more and more words. It takes years to become fluent listeners. (Some people never learn to listen even in their native language.) First pick out known words, keep on listening, DON'T STOP, and with time you will get meaning. Remember natives often drop an "s", especially a final "s". Native listeners know the word ends in "s" because the vowel is left open. this is difficult for the non-native. (Maybe the subject will be plural or tú. There is a clue.) Other speakers pronounce ALL silibants (s, z, ci, ce) as a soft "th". An intervocal "d" (d between two vowels) is often dropped. (I just dropped the t while writing "often" and had to rewrite "ofen".) Many speakers do this but can pronounce them when speaking to you. In Granada they say: "tho de Graná, cathi ná" = Soy de Granada casi nada. Ask a native to speak "más despacio" "¿Podría hablar más despacio?" They will and also speak louder! "Más bajito pero más despacio y con "ese" y "de". A literate speaker (i.e. one who has studied their language in school, knows where there is an "s" or a "d" and will slow down and enunciate for you. But in the end you will need to recognize when these sounds are absent. Just has you know that "Wha ja gonna do?" means "What are you going to do." (Hint: when speakinng to a non-fluent English speaker slow down and enunciate for them. They learned English from a book or the internet too.)

I have a question: does watching movies and podcasts improve my listening, and after how many years I will be able to understand Spaniards well, as if I were one of them
@YourMajesty143
@YourMajesty143 3 года назад
@@user-od6ic9ed4k - Yes, it will. It's the best way to learn. Try to stick with Mexican and/or Peruvian dialects bc they speak clearly and enunciate all the letters. Don't get caught up in learning about dropped S or D as a beginner, bc it'll only seek to frustrate you. Instead get your vocabulary up to where you need it, and then transition to learning other dialects. In Venezuela we replace the S with H (or J in Spanish), however I first started learning through Mexican Telenovelas, news shows, and music like Selena, Thalia, CNCO, Carlos Rivera, Gloria Treví, etc. After learning this way, I was able to progress practicing with my family who spoke differently. Luckily, I understood enough words to recognize which ones they were saying. Another tip is to sit down for a half hour a day and pick your favorite scene or favorite verse, then practice hearing, writing, and repeating it out loud. Do this for a year and you'll become fluent. And don't feel bad if you don't understand other dialects, even Latinos who speak the native language have trouble understanding each other. Mexicans have no idea what people are saying when they speak Carribean Spanish (Cuban, DR, PR). If you truly wish to learn the Carribean dialect, learn Venezuelan Spanish bc we speak the same vocabulary but we at least enunciate and pause most words. If you're Italian, then try the Argentinian or Uruguayan dialects bc they have Italian influence in their pronunciation, replacing Y or LL with SH. Avoid Chilean and Cuban dialects in the beginning, they speak way too fast and most Spanish speakers have no idea what they're saying. Spain Spanish is even more foreign to Latinos bc they have a completely different pronounciation and slang. If you wish to learn Spain dialect with African or French influence, Ecuatorial Guinea speak very fluently & beautifully. The dialect that is the prettiest to hear is Colombian and Venezuelan Spanish bc they have musicality in the way they intonate certain sentences. So whatever dialect you choose, all that matters is that it's a dialect that you'll encounter in your life. For me, Mexican and Carribean Spanish exist in my life, so I'm not gonna worry about other dialects. It'd be counterproductive to be fluent in all of them. Choose one or 2 that you're comfortable with and stick with those as your chosen Spanish.

Que lo que hay ? Soy mulatto. Blanco y Moreno. I took 2 - 3 Years of Spanish in school. Plus I moved to Florida and my best friend down there Was New Yorican. So I always tried to use the Spanish that I knew was him and his mother and they always spoke Spanish back. Then I went to the military and was around Mexicans, Puerto Rican’s, and Dominicans y una Paraguaya . I listened to Reggaeton and fell in love with the culture. My sister even got jealous of me and used to say you think you’re Puerto Rican. So I used it a lot and I spoke it a lot but I never really spoken the different tenses Just the present. Always had problems understanding. And that was back in 2003. So if I still need to communicate I could but will definitely would have problems. I’m 38 now and I want to fulfill my goal to be fluent in Spanish specifically the Boricua dialec

I’ve been on and off with Spanish for a few years and and one point I was very conversational and people even called me to assist them helping them with a native. In college I took private lessons for a month and that helped me a lot and I retained a good much of it. As of late my last job I had a Columbian co worker and spoke to her in Spanish at times, and even a few months ago I ordered Amazon fresh and the drivers only spoke Spanish which forced me to speak it because they couldn’t find my house ; they said I was good but I didn’t believe it lol. This year I plan to become fluent so don’t give up! Buena suerte con todo!

"If you're really serious about learning Spanish you really shouldn't be listening to anything other then Spanish" #Truth Best advice you can get. It sucks at first because you think that you should learn Spanish first and then listen to Spanish stuff once you understand but this is not the way our brains learn a new language.

En España decir "tío" es como decir "chico"/ in Spain say "tío" means or is like to say "dude" or "guy". You don't have to confuse "tío" that is a accent only in Spain with uncle. Yes! I know that is the same word but it is not the same mean. Just remember, that word is only use for spain speakers. 🤓

What you are doing to help (me) in my Spanish language learning quest is much appreciated (you are doing fine - even just understanding your well oriented, intelligent, youthful, enthusiasm helps). What is most helpful is that there are so many resources readily available - your efforts included, of course. I am certainly not the most brilliant, but over time I can tell that I am "getting it" more and more and eventually hope to be in the situation where I understand much more and my learning accelerates... currently I am swamped and bogged down by the (great) extents of learning a new language - I had never given much thought to what that amounts to. It's interesting... I am learning more than the Spanish language by trying to learn Spanish. thanks for sharing, gracias, enjoy

Necesito practicar mas pero no tengo nadie with whom to practice. It's very frustrating. I have wanted to learn Spanish since I was four years old. I've taken five years of Spanish in school. I learned Spanish because I work with a lot of Hispanics some don’t speak English. But they are from different countries in Latin America and I understand 90% of what they say. So my Spanish is mostly Latin American but even then sometimes I’ll use words from Mexico and other times I’ll use words from Peru or Colombia. Some words I even use are from Spain. What’s funny is I used Chévere with one of my Mexican coworkers and she was like “We don’t use that in Mexico that’s more like Argentina or Colombia”. It’s funny what you said about the Spanish Netflix series. I was watching this Chilean series (I stopped because it wasn’t that interesting). But some of the words they used I didn’t recognize, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile seem to speak Spanish most differently from other countries. Even though Mexico has a lot of slang.

Pick a scene from a show you're watching or a song from your favorite album, and set aside 30 min a day every day for a year listening, writing, and speaking a scene or verse. I picked a Telenovela, and if there's a scene that had a cool interaction or there was an interesting dialogue I wanted to learn, I'd dedicate a half hour to an hour learning those phrases & testing myself. If you do this consistently every day, after a year you'll be fluent.

A good idea for a test would be to speak a few sentences in Puerto Rican Spanish fast and then ask the users to translate them. And or say a few sentences in English or standard Spanish and get ask the users to translate them into PR Spanish.

I have a hard time understanding Spanish tv. I am use to hearing my Puerto Rican dialect. I am finally trying to learn more Spanish cause my parents spoke only a little of Spanish. Only my fathers parents would speak to me in Spanish when I was younger.

Subscribed and bought your Speak Spanish Faster course. (Kind of scared to start in case I find it too diff :) Going to visit Queretaro, Mx. in Nov. for 7 days. Will be with a Mexican contact but his English is nil but his French is great. Have almost zero Spanish but speak a lot of French (Canadian) so it seems to help comprehension. Love love your vids. Just need a bit of small talk tips maybe for the Airbnb hostess, airport customs, airline passenger/hostess, taxi directions. Maybe you covered all this in your course Rocky??? TX!

Serena! Thanks so much, first of all, for putting your trust in us :) I’m so happy you love the videos. Don’t worry inside of our course, I created a special bonus section for Travel where I go over some important words and phrases. You have access to this bonus inside your account. In the future, I plan on doing a full blown Spanish Travel Course. Do me a favor, on your trip to Mexico, keep note of some important areas of travel and please follow up with me. That will give me some ideas for the travel course. Seven Day Spanish will do a lot to help your comprehension though. You have 3 months so definitely get started now ;) I want nothing on your radio or TV but Spanish until your trip to Mexico. You will be fine though. Mexicans speak great Spanish. They pronounce all the syllables and speak very clearly and not too fast. So you will do just fine. Let me know your results with the course, so we can share it with our subscribers. Thanks again and I’m always here for any of your Spanish needs.

I'm late to finding these videos. But I've noticed that my problem with speaking spanish is the fact that I try to actively translate in real time, rather than just speaking spanish as if its another word. For a simple example, if someone says "hola", I Don't just think "hola". I think "Hola means hello." I do this with conjugating as well. "She likes cats" to me, in my head goes, "okay, she is ella, to like is gustar, cats is gatos. Ella gusta los gatos." I dont know how to think of it as a vocabulary word(s), that mean the same thing. I think in english first, then try to say it in Spanish. I guess the easiest way to say it is, I think I should be thinking of it as a synonym to english words. Idk if this makes a lick of sense.

Thank you for this video. But, honestly, I have been speaking Spanish for thirty years, since I learned it in high school, but listening to Spanish-speaking television like Univision does not help in my case. I just get lost very quickly, and then it's over; I can't get my footing again. I appreciate your story about the Money Heist and your difficulty in Spain, but that's been me all my life. I can speak very quickly and fluently, which, I think, gives listeners the false impression that I am able to comprehend just as well, and that's just not the case. I like your tip about listening actively, but I'm not sure how to do that. I do try to focus on what is being said, for example, on Univision, but, as I said, I get lost very quickly and it spirals into hopelessness from there. Are there "sub-tips" you can provide on how to better actively listen? (EDIT! Mad props to Nancy Nieman, below, who has hit it right on the head for me!)
