Excellent video! This takes the "Just Follow the Recipe" out of sewing. Sewing is personal, not just a recipe. You can't just follow the steps and have it come out fine, and SO MANY sewists do not understand that. VERY IMPORTANT VIDEO!!

Not an exact answer to your question, but I find it most difficult to master fitting on a split pattern (ex. if the front piece is made up of three separate pieces).
@speedbully_84

More exact answer would be, as you mentioned, transferring your changes from your mock up to the pattern so you don't have to do the same fitting changes again and again 😊

1. I learned not to try to fit myself, or someone else, when certain people were around to interfear in the process. Snide remarks, and having the task jurked (taken) out of my hands, should never be allowed; because, they will lead to mistakes everytime. Always wait until abusive people are not around (these may be family members). 2. Never rush. "Haste makes waste" is real when you are trying to learn and/or are trying to make a good fit. Take the time to make a fabric tester. 3. Always measure, at least twice. before making a cut into your expensive fabric. 4. If you have a garmet that fits you well, don't forget to check out the measurements of that garment to the pattern you are getting ready to use. 5. Ask questions of people that have more experience than you (who are humble, kind, know how to sew and love to teach others). You want to learn and not be discouraged. Not all fabric shop owners (or their staff) are good teachers.

1 video on this just not possible! 🤣 This is an entire course inside of Vintage Sewing School because as you can imagine it all depends on what kind of changes and there's a lot involved. But understanding patterns first and how they work fitting together and stitch line etc is first, then makes alterations much easier! 🙂

The fact that you might be bigger in the front or the back was a surprise for me. One would think --"Well, it's the proper measurement around , it should fit." But if it's too big in the back and too small in the front, it won't just flow into place.

It sometimes takes a long time to get a pattern to fit properly, especially a tailored jacket or woven trousers for example. However, once you get the fit - you can use the pattern over and over with great results and fewer (if any) fit issues. Trousers made from the same pattern can be changed by adding pockets, moving the zipper from the side to the back, changing the waist band, the width of the legs....but the most difficult waist, hips, and crotch depth remain the same. Thanks for explaining the basics Evelyn.

Yessss!! Polly this is exactly the way that I look at spending the extra time making your patterns perfect! Is that then it becomes part of your pattern library that you can make garments over and over with easy changes make completely different garments out of the same pattern, and you get so much more bang for your buck so to say!

Yes! It took me several hours and a couple of old sheets for mock-ups to get ONE well-fitting pants pattern. Moving those changes to a new pattern took about 15 minutes, and 5 of that was finding the tape and scissors.

Oh Yes! I started sewing b.c. I wanted the garment to fit ME and my body and not the pattern size or the sizes imagined by pattern companies. It is hard to find vintage patterns to fit plus size bust or (as I make) victorian vest? Oh what a nightmare! You are absolutely right - the hardest part is getting over your size 'shame' that companies taught us but when you do - freedom baby! :)

I never hade that problem. In our house they teach us that every bodyshape is pretty and something to be proud and in joy with. New clothes we get we made a fashion show to show everybody in the house and everyone was happy and in Ahh and oeh so pretty nice colour. I think now that im very lucky for this way of teaching good selfimage. Now i tray to do it not only at home but tray to gif people around me compluments like that. I just am very exiting when i measure myself and find the numbers on the pattern so i know its a bit easier to get my fitajustments. And i just reasintly learnt some better fitajustments for my bodyshape and i find it a party. And with trends like skinny jeans..I was like oh oké im not in style, so happy i can make my one flared leg or a Nice straight leg pantalon. Every body is pretty and uniek and desurfs to be selebrethed and showered with love and care💗

The interesting thing is, once you get over your personal size shame and make something that fits your body..... your body suddenly looks better-than-ok GOOD! The bulges and wrinkles in your old clothes were not a mark of shame, they were a mark of clothes that did not fit!!

@@SewVintageAlex it's a year ago but kinda funny how you blame companies for "imagining sizes". The patterns they have is basically the average measurements of many people, which is why it mostly fit average sized people even though not perfectly. Plus size patterns require different calculation that's why most companies dont do it. But the essence of generalization of sizes is to cut down the cost of making clothes, unlike before industrialization started where only rich people had the privilege to get their garment tailored while poor people making their own garments. The key is to make clothing more affordable to everyone which is fair. Good for you for making your own garment then cause for me it is an expensive hobby that I really enjoy 😅

I have always followed step one ( using original pattern) and step 3. I have never made a mock up. My fitting has always been step 3 ( before sleeves, collars etc). As long as my measurements and ease were what I wanted its always worked. Love your teachings. Old school is the best.

Thank you for this comment, really helped to motivate me as the whole subject of mock ups overwhelms me as a beginner. Since I'm only looking to make more basic clothes though I should be able to get away with a method like yours. While I do enjoy sewing, I do also feel somewhat forced into learning it as basically nothing store bought ever fits me. I seem to be in the impossible center between the 'normal' range and the curvy range, to where neither fit (curvy too big, normal too small in their biggest size).

@@kittenonacloud1012 Do bear in mind that making a mock up doesn't need to be overwhelming. I've made a few mock-ups that have turned out so well, they get worn as well. So pleased that I found your channel. I'm about to watch the one about fitting without a mannequin. In the past, if I found a style I really liked and it fitted well, I'd make up several garments (usually dresses) with different fabrics. I'd forgotten about using kraft paper or older newspaper to make up your pattern since those tissues can be very fragile and will only hold up to so much tweaking. My mother and grandmother taught me to sew on an old Singer treadle machine. I'm 72 now and use a very heavy portable basic Kenmore while all my quilting friends have high-tech machines. There are days when I really wish for a treadle machine.

Baste or something similar if you can get away with it. When doing mock garments for things that aren't super close fitting (so this definitely does not work for corsets) I use longer easy to remove stitches, cut only when I must, trying to otherwise fold the fabric and have all that bulk on the outside. I've saved hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars, on muslin and other mock up fabrics this way because I can just pull the stitches and have larger pieces still that I can use on my next mock up

I am a fencer, and recently I have started thinking of fitting a garment as if I am learning a new technique. I can't just read about a new feint, for example, and then use it directly in a fencing bout. First I have to drill for god knows how many hours to get the movement down. Then I have to drill it some more in a sequence with other moves, and only then I can go test it out with an opponent. Doing the paper fit and the mock up are the drills - they are time-consuming, boring and repetitive and I know I'm going to scream the entire time while I unpick and resew my mock up five times in a row to get the fit right. But I just have to accept that doing the fitting drill is the only way that later I am proud of what I've made.

The hardest step for me is the third step. At this point I am often ready to just have the finished garment and it really takes some willpower to overcome my laziness because I know that I wont wear the piece if it isnt fitted perfectly. The same goes for clipping the seam allowances, final ironing etc. This is why I sometimes take breaks in my sewing process. About 2 weeks after finishing the garment I am often mentally prepared to do the final fitting and finishing steps 😅 Right now I am testing if time pressure works as well. I really need the dress I am currently working on for an upcoming wedding in 10 days... we will see. Thank you for the Video though! This might be the motivation I needed

I've just started this journey myself; I did a muslin on a skirt, made the adjustments, started sewing it with the fashion fabric and realized that the difference between the two fabrics (regular muslin vs. a fairly heavy denim, with stretch), meant that it fit very differently! So for me, the most helpful thing was mentioning that you can still tweak it as you construct it. I was just so excited to be finally putting it together I didn't think to allow for that! Luckily, I had enough left over that I was able to re-cut the front and undo an adjustment that was causing problems in the denim. THIS TIME, I will simply baste and now sew / serge the seams to check the fit BEFORE boldly going forward!

Transferring pattern pieces from tissue to other paper is genius! I'll be doing this from now on, thank you! I have to say for anyone else out there that might think making toiles is a waste of fabric- its absolutely not! For years I never made a mock up garment of a cheaper fabric that I could actually try on and I would just skip that step and go straight to cutting & sewing my actual (more expensive) fashion fabric- MISTAKE! Every time I skipped making a toile the finished garment didn't fit right and since it was made out of my more expensive fabric, it was just wasted and I'd never wear it because it didnt fit right. Toiles are worth the time & effort!

I only started sewing this year but I've had a lot of fit issues and subsequent learnings already. I learnt most women's patterns are drafted for a B cup, which in the sewing world means the bust measurement is 2" larger than the high bust measurement so if you're bust isn't that large proportional to your high bust you might want to pick a size larger bust measurement so it isn't too tight across the upper chest. And now I'm painfully learning about narrow shoulder adjustment!

This is good to hear. I decided I wanted to make a design I saw in a shop, so had to learn how to make the pattern. I went down a rabbit hole of videos and books, it took days to understand important things. Then I made my first mock top, it failed went back to the drawing board and more videos, tried again and in the end decided to do something I didn't think would work and voila. My mock top of that went through a few alteration stages. I loved being able to draw all over it, cut it where I wanted, add bits and take bits away. I learnt so much through the entire process. I undid the mock top, redrew the pattern from it and made what I wanted. I am less afraid now to try things.

in the past and my history with sewing, i never once made a toille/muslin. although the instructions would say to, i would think to myself "i'm not going to all that trouble of making a fake one. i just make it out of my fashion fabric". i don't recall it ever being a total failure, but there was definitely room for improvement. i also never made anything particularly hard or well tailored. thanks you to and other seamstresses on yt, i'm working towards getting back into sewing for myself (its been 21 years). i just folded some freshly washed fabric that i procured last weekend, along with some patterns. can't wait! thanks for your videos.

Wish I'd discovered yours and a couple other channels about 4 months ago. I've been sewing (actively) for 5 years, but come from a LARP background - and let me tell you, while a T-tunic is an excellent way to learn how to learn very basic preliminary construction, it is not the end-all-be-all of sewing. I taught myself princess seams, to a degree, but lacked any mentor. But I liked how the garments I made fit well enough, and enjoyed the process of sewing well enough that I decided to pursue an ambitious sewing project: making my own wedding dress for my medieval/fantasy-themed wedding. It's going, but I'm only focusing on the bodice (which takes ~1.5 yds (1.4 meters)) and have gone through 12 yards (~11 meters) of fabric just trying to fit the bodice properly and there's STILL things I dislike about the fit (I am not generally a perfectionist, I finally got the design comfortable, now I'm just curing the weird bunching at the front of the armhole seam (I was taught to call this armscythe by my quasi-mentors in the LARP field, but have yet to hear anyone else use the term). Discovering videos like yours and other creators have meant I see more impact from each draft, however. I'll get it done, but fit is no joke! I will be saving this pattern into perpetuity once I get it worked out!

I couldn’t believe how much faster it was to make my girl’s Easter dresses because they wanted them loose fitting and I wanted room for them to grow into them. The dresses patterns are always sized larger than my girls are, so I just made them up as is. But the fit was quite large in the waist for my little skinny minis. Since that was the goal, it was okay, but contrast that with the earlier shirts I made for them that fit almost perfectly because I did the adjustments in size and the toiles ahead of time. It may take longer, but you’re spot on. That extra work translates into a much improved fit!

i did GCSE textilles, was a brief trainee tailoress, did industrial sewing on sports tennis and badminton nets and did quite a few DIY projects that never turned out the way i wanted, which all ended at least 15 years ago XD I'm going on holiday to a hot n humid country, linen has been the suggested fabric to wear. I've worked out it would be the same price/cheaper to buy patterns, dressmaker doll, sewing machine, thread, fabric etc n make myself. I never did mock-ups n i never had an adjustable doll in the past. Luckily my area has a good selection of charity shops, so i'll be buying some bedding it seems XD My brain has been almost feverish with anticipation and desire to make my own clothes, to finally have clothes i actually WANT vrs what will do Take shorts, they are always too long n frumpy on me, or too short n revealing of my upper thigh flabbyness, now i can make them with All The Pockets, the length and width i desire

I've been making my clothes pretty much all my life and if I still had all the clunkers that I ended up with, I'd have to add a room ... not just a closet ... to keep them in! I know those 3 steps would help me, it seems like a lot of work, but so is skipping them and going straight to a clunker! So anyway I would like to learn how to do those steps. Another challenge is to pick out a dress style that will work for my body, perhaps you have a video that addresses this challenge. If so, could you please let me know where to find it. Thank you very much, your videos are wonderful and I'm considering signing up for vintage sewing school, just haven't gotten up my courage/commitment yet.

But I found even just stopping at the pattern stage and actually measuring the peices myself and adjusting according to my measurments makes the finished garment turn out so much better!

Thanks for all your realistic information about fitting and sewing and how long it actually takes. I made a 2 hr summer skirt (in about 6 hrs) only to realize that it doesn't look right on me and will take a lot of adjusting. It isn't like baking muffins which takes about an hour start to finish! So I've unpicked and gone back a few steps. The material was in my stash and not expensive so I will use it as a toile and make my adjustments.

As somebody who is about 18 months into my dressmaking journey, my biggest light bulb moment so far was when I profoundly understood that I cannot expect a perfect fit simply by slavishly following the pattern instructions! Most commonly for me, I need to grade between sizes at the hip, lengthen the bodice, and lower any horizontal bust darts. I really am desperate to attend some face-to-face "fitting" classes so I can benefit from expert guidance in the real world! Until that is possible, I am soaking up as much "virtual" wisdom as possible. So thank you for sharing yours! 🙏

I have no wish to tread on Evelyn's toes here, but could I recommend some of the fitting videos from Sure Fit Designs? I was trying to make trousers that fit me, using a commercial pattern that stated quite clearly not to grade between the sizes - as this was my first pair of trousers that left me in something of a quandary as there was no way these trousers were going to fit me unless I did so. Thankfully, SFD has a design system that allows one to create a pattern that fits in every direction - and along with the system are the video and article libraries that show how to adjust the various areas to fit - and they have a dress section as well as a section for trousers. I have found that between Evelyn, SFD and a couple of other RU-vidr sewers, I've managed to learn how to adjust and sew together all sorts of different garments.

Thank you for this very informative video. I would say I am just passed the acceptance stage of "Assumed Knowledge" and the deep secrets of The Pattern. I have recently found myself at the stage of "Pattern sizing on the packaging doesn't mean diddley squat" and so have found myself at this lovely video. My biggest take away is that there are 2 other stages to a good fitting. I knew there was the final one when using your fashion fabric. Changing the pattern to fit my body early on makes total sense as well as doing a muslim mock up. I kinda sorta was doing my own way of of a mock up. I bought the cheapest plain black cotton to make a wearable skirt. I figured it would be easy to hide any errors etc...but old bed sheets makes more sense and i wouldnt have to carry out final tidbits....i acutally don't know. Hopefully I will find your video on that :) I recant! My biggest take away that had the bells in my head say DING DING: "Slow down" i'm too in a rush to wear stuff lol

Since i had a longer torso than average, I have always had to add inches at the waist when the dress has a fitted waistline. Making skirt darts is no problem for me, and that was in a different video, so I was able to skip past that since my darts are always right on target and not all pointed. I guess even though I didn't do well in home economics in school, I later learned how to sew and now want to make items out of necessity. Thanks for your channel. I especially like the part where you talk about the necessity to make a skin for your mannequin, which is something I didn't do in the past. I look forward to working with my mannequin in a few months, but right now it is not even out of the box, as life got in the way.

Hello Evelyn, I'm new to your channel, and I am finding it very useful! I have come to agree with all three stages of fitting, especially after making the mistakes of cutting out my fashion fabric, and sewing up a garment...and then the terrible disappointment that it doesn't fit properly. It's also frequently the case that the overall silhouette of the garment does not suit my figure. There is a difference between good garment construction and a garment that I'll actually wear! Case in point: I made a very simple tunic style top out of some Liberty lawn ($$$!!), and it looked like a (very pretty) hospital gown on me. So, I reworked the fabric into a camisole...but it still didn't look right. I used some other Liberty fabric to modify the camisole pattern by lowering the dart by a full 2 inches, and it fits better. It's still not necessarily the best shape for my bust, and the fabric drapes rather stiffly. This has resulted in me being a little wary of digging into my fabric stash to make my own clothes, but I'm considering my current stash as a learning opportunity! Investing the time in these three steps will get me much farther along in a handmade wardrobe that is functional and fits well, which is my ultimate goal! Thanks so much!
