When do you feel most inspired to sew?
For me, the motivation is usually sparked by a change in seasons, a special occasion, an unsuccessful shopping experience or travel plans. I recently had a burst of sewing inspired by summer travel plans so I wanted to share what I made and give you a little “behind the scenes” view of the pattern work that allowed me to skip the sample and cut into the fashion fabric with confidence.
I was sure I was going to skip the jumpsuit trend this time around, but I found this pattern in my collection and it seemed the perfect piece to take on a summer vacation as well as an elevated way to stay comfortable throughout the entire summer. As an added bonus I already had the fabric and notions on hand.
Unfortunately, this pattern is out of print, but I have no doubt you'll find a similar one if you're so inclined. Watch the video for a closer look at the pattern and a summary of how I altered the pattern to fit me without needing to sew a sample.
I encourage you not to skip through any of this video. In fact you may want to go back and review it again, I shared some really valuable tips on fitting a pant pattern. Trust me there are golden nuggets in the process I shared.
Did you enjoy this video?
If you'd like to see more like this, let me know! You can subscribe to my youtube channel, message me via email at alexandra@inhousepatterns.com or visit me on instagram @inhousepatterns. When you comment, like, follow and share on these platforms, you’ll get more of what you love in your feed and help others to find the content too. I would also really appreciate the support too.
Next week, I'll be sharing how I took this pattern and created the most comfortable pair of wide leg pants. I hope you'll tune in.
All My Best,
Alexandra

Hey Alexandra, love your vids, so professional and classy. Thank you for posting. There is a huge gap in the sewing world for this type of content, fitting a pattern. Thank you so much for filling that void! I've made my own clothes based on your information. They look smashing on me!

Beautiful fit! And what a joy to avoid making a muslin by changing the pattern in advance! Thank you for this video! I'm learning to draft patterns from my measurements but I have a whole collection of store-bought patterns that could now be fine-tuned without the muslin step!

There sure is some really great info in this video, so I wrote lots of notes. Some techniques I haven't heard of before. Makes me very anxious to be able to join your pants fitting course in 2024! I've gained so much confidence and knowledge from your fitting essentials course!

Thanks for this and those who commented and replied. I'm self learning via tutorials such as this and some books. This has been most useful in the steps and sequence if preparing a pattern. Bodice back first, then the back. Off to try out and watch your tutorial on balance lines its the bust the gets me.

Alexandra, it's been a while since your last video. When it came up on my subscription feed I wondered if you had put out an email but no. Haven't viewed it yet since I don't sew too much for myself anymore since I am retired but I have always loved your teachings and videos.

Yes, I’ve sent out 2 emails this month, check your spam and junk folders… or perhaps you’ve unsubscribed? You can send me an email and I’ll check that for you.

Hi Alexandra, I’m working on the Ellen pants and watching all of your pant related tutorials. This is my first pair of pants in many years. So, in this video I believe I’m understanding the length adjustments are from the floor up. Where I got lost was the decrease between knee to crotch. I do understand the crotch needs to be lower (shorter) than the body. Based on the numbers you mentioned, I saw 1 1/2”. May I ask, how did you come to 1 7/8”? I’m sure there’s some bit of info I missed, in spite of re-watching several times. 😊 Thank you

Beautiful fit! I have never heard about lowering the crotch area. Good explanation. How you do it?

Thank you sew much. I'm trying to learn how to sew it's definitely a learning curve. One question re grading are there any rules about how many sizes you can go up to? You graded 2 sizes at what point would you stop.
@AlexandraMorganInHousePatterns
@AlexandraMorganInHousePatterns 11 месяцев назад
You are limited to the width of the grid ruler you are using and there is some distortion when you grade more than 2 or 3 sizes, but it depends on the original grade rule that was applied.

What if you have an older pattern from the 70's where you only have one size. Is there anyway of grading that up one or two sizes?
@rhonddalesley
@rhonddalesley 11 месяцев назад
I actually watched a video on exactly that the other day but can’t remember who the creator was although if you search ‘how to grade up a vintage pattern’ it’ll pop up. I saw a video recently (it might’ve been Alexandra) where they said to not grade up more than 2 sizes at a time because the pattern can become distorted, so if you need to go up 3 sizes for example, grade up 2 sizes first then use the resulting pattern to grade up the one remaining size.
