Manute Bol is the most inspirational athlete ever for me. Made decent money playing I the 80’s, but a pittance by today’s standards. Certainly not enough to retire after his playing days like an average t athlete of today could. He lived very humbly and gave just about all his money away to Sudanese charities. After his playing career, he willingly had a Celebrity Boxing match with Refrigerator Perry knowing he was going to get murdered in that fight (and he did), but he did it to raise money for his village. There are numerous athletes who give so much of themselves: Warrick Dunn, JJ Watt, Larry Fitzgerald, etc…. I applaud all of them. But Manute Bol is something more than special.
Manute Bol was recruited to play basketball for a small college in Connecticut, The University of Bridgeport where he led the team to national prominence at the Division 2 level. He went on to a career in the NBA and never forgot his origins, and sent significant funds back home to help raise the quality of life there.
This man retired from the NBA to live in a village without running water. Everyone in the village used the well he paid for. His home ended up being the biggest in his tribe. Also in his tribe being shorter then 6'4 was strange.
Fact 5: Bol coined the term “My Bad.” When he 1st joined the NBA, he couldn’t speak English. So when he messed up on the court, he would say the only two words he knew😂
I want to believe this so much since Manute Bol is one of my all time favourite people and I frequently have no idea what to say in situations other than "my bad"
@@reyeseuropeos9153 thats his the age on his contract, his college coach made up an age for him so he would be eligible to play, but even he himself didn't know his own age.
He also helped create the country of Soith Sudan, while playing basketball he was giving orders overseas on what to do in battles they were having. Man was something else, his son is also doing great now to. Bol Bol.
I can remember seeing him for the first time when he came to Philly. Back then where my drinking days and I was sitting behind the Sixers bench. I reached forward and put my hand on his shoulder, and he just kindly put his hand on my hand and tapped it. Then he said thank you, what a nice guy he was. God bless him.
Well then you Sir are a self entitled arse. Being famous does not mean he is yours to fondle. He may have been polite but you are not. I am sure he'd love nothing more than to tell you what a jerk you were.
Shhh, I agree and I liked this comment, but think about it this way: If he wasn't disguised as an entertainer there would have been many powerful people who would catch on and do what they could to stop the cash flow to the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement
I met him when I was working for Greyhound in D.C He came in package express to pick up a package and he didn't look human. He was a giant. He had to duck and bend down to walk through the sliding doors. Nicest guy in the world.
He was the only player who killed a lion, he knocked out his front teeth by jumping up to dunk a basketball, he went to the University of Bridgeport in CT
There's a picture of Manute Bol in a swimming pool, and it's so eerie! I wish Chris Carter would've written an X File episode for him to swim around in a lake and attack people or something! The man looks like a Xenomorph swimming. It's spooky!
Indeed, especially the year-or-so when NBA teams woudn't sign him when he returned to US after having trouble returning from then-Sudan because the corrupt government wanted to silence him. He played hockey and celebrity boxing to rake in more cash for the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement. Someone give this man a post-humous nobel peace prize.
Manute was a good dude and a Philadelphia fan favorite. He hit like 12 threes one game. I remember watching him do it when I was a youngin and I was amazed. He also sent all his earnings back to his tribe in Africa.
A young man I worked with in the 80's was bulked up by his team, they'd put a case of Heineken on his doorstep nightly. He went from low 200 to 285. Graduated and had a short. Run in the USFL and a Heineken addiction.
Fact 5 he was in the nba but it didn’t work out for him for a while so he went to other sports like hockey and soccer but in return they also didn’t work out for them until he decided to back to the nba and it worked out for him
