What I learned from my last quilt ... start in the center and work towards the edges. It’s much easier to scrunch unquilted layers into the harp space than quilted (and stiffer) layers. Make a quilting plan. Maybe start in center and work in quadrants.

I had my grandmother's Singer from the 1940s and it was heavy as heck. But the thing ran for decades. My mom had it for a long time, and then I had it, and used it, for a couple of decades also. Nana used to make quilts on it that are still within the family to this day. I've decided recently to take up the art and bought a new heavy-duty Singer. I'm amazed how it's so light and plastic. The foot pedal bothers me - the old ones are heavy and stay put. But I'm getting used to it and am enjoying the journey. Thank you Angela for the instructions - but mostly the confidence. You're brilliant!

I love watching videos to see that quilting a large quilt on a regular machine is possible, but whenever I try it, I end up with potty mouth! I have "graduated" to the point where I can do a decent-sized lap throw, as long as I'm only stippling. Baby steps!

There are Bluprint classes on how to quilt big quilts on small machines. The best thing I've learned is how to add the batting in two or three sections. It is amazing how much easier this makes it. My machine only has a 8.25 throat space, and it works great using that method.

Put the ironing board next to your sewing table. An ironing board is perfect for this because you can adjust its height to fit the height of your sewing table or cabinet and it is something everyone owns. It will give you considerably more real estate for your quilt to lay flat.

Kathy Shoemaker it’s a batting that has a type of glue on it and you iron your layers together and they fuse together. Angela has a video on it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q3IZmFMIfd8.html

You can also get basting glue. This way you probably spend less money because you can just buy normal batting and the glue can last for many many quilts. The basting glue is in a spray can and you just spray it between the layers to keep them together. This is what I've used for my quilts I've made and you just put them in the washer once you're done to get the glue off.

My main struggle is that even on a large table, I can’t seem to move the quilt around smoothly enough to try more intricate free motion, especially with a big and heavy one. I have given up on the idea of anything other than grids, random swirls or long wavy lines until the day of owning a long arm 😁

I agree Nina...I cannot move mine either andit's frustrating. Then after I quilted yesterday and thought I was doing great, the backside was looping....I adjusted and adjusted tension and to no avail....I have to take it all apart now and like you said....just grids.....first I have to adjust my tension to make sure it's ok on the back...

Any special hints or tips for that? (OH yea, have Elvira since 2" things R me). Design planning is so different in a combined space of under 24 x 24.

I need help... I am making my first quilt.. I got it all to quilt... I have a xl2600i brother sewing machine. Which has done well so far.. just want to know of there is a better sewing machine out there, that doesnt cost that much. That is maybe one step above for quilting.. I feel that is the best part, and it just makes a quilt stand out.. please help... or maybe tips on using this one to free motion quilt.. I mean u can not lower the feed dogs and when I put the little plastic thingy over them. It makes it to wear it is hard to fit the quilt in.. idk. Maybe It is possible to do this on this sewing machine.. I have already bought alot of fabrics to make more.. ot is so much fun.. and I'm already addicted to the sound and what u can do with the fabric.. sorry if I am rambling, I get excited..

Hello! Where to begin the machine quilting on a project, at least in part, depends on how you plan to quilt it. If doing an overall free-motion design, after sandwiching and stabilizing (basting) the layers, you might begin at the upper left side and move all the way across in a “row fashion” or begin at the upper right corner area and progress all the way down to the bottom edge in a “column fashion”. If doing a meander / stipple, sometimes I’ve found it easier to begin in the center area of the quilt sandwich and move outward in a wedge-shaped trajectory. If your quilt top has blocks separated by sashing, you may want to begin by stabilizing the entire quilt sandwich by doing straight-line machine quilting using a walking foot or dual-feed mechanism, stitching in all the ditches. Then you can do a free-motion motif design within the area of each block. There are many machine quilting options and approaches available. In addition to this class, there are a variety of machine quilting classes on the Craftsy platform to provide you with more information and ideas. Best wishes! Kelly
