How do you hide a safe? Some hidden safes are designed as hidden safes. Wall safes and floor safes are the two best examples of that. But there are other after market products that hide safes too.

• Where to Hide a Safe -...
Wall safes are a great as disguised hidden safes.They are built to go in between studs in standard 4" walls and can easily be covered by pictures or other wall art. They can be used as a hidden gun safe for pistols. And they are easy to install for a DIY hidden safe option.
Hidden floor safes are probably the best way to hide a safe. We've talked to many homeowners that have found floor safes in a home they have moved into, some years after moving in.
But, in new homes, you must plan to install a floor safe. New homes with post tension slabs cannot be excavated to install a hidden floor safe once the concrete has been poured. So they must be installed during construction.
In older homes, (pre-mid 1990) you can hide a safe in the floor by knocking out the concrete, placing the safe into the hole, and pouring new concrete around the now-hidden safe to secure it. Always check for post tension before installing a floor safe as a DIY hidden safe .
Lastly, American Security Safes (AMSEC) makes a safe cloak in order to conceal or hide a gun safe. Let's face it, there aren't a lot of options for a hidden gun safe and this is probably the best one. It creates a faux finish for the safe by overlaying a laminate sheet over the gun safe to make it look like a cabinet. It's not going to fool anyone standing next to the safe, but it will fool someone driving or walking by that looks into your garage when the garage door is open. They won't see a gun safe, it will be hidden, they'll see a cabinet.

This was very informative. We learned the value of a safe AFTER our house burned down several years ago! Fortunately, we survived - but we now have a fire proof safe from ACME that has all our important papers (just the right size for us). Your post reminded me that I need to update the safe contents with pictures & saved receipts for large purchases because those "Pesky" ( a polite term) Insurance Companies will not replace or reimburse anything from a disaster without a truck load of documentation.

Wall safes CAN be made to hold much more than they were designed for, especially if you have a brick/stone/block-built house. My UK 30's-built one has nooks and crannies in various places. Rather than have "all my eggs in one basket", I decided on wall safes in multiple location but built some into a small, false, brick/breeze-block wall, with a decent cavity behind. A typical place would be behind the bottom of a staircase (if enclosed, not open to view), a foot or two away from the bottom corner. Another place would be up in the loft/attic/roof-space, adjacent to a chimney stack, so it looks to be part of it. A bit of imagination is all that is needed. The back of the wall safe can then have a hole (round or square) cut into the back before the safe is cemented in. You now have a much larger safe still protected by the same door security it originally had. Your valuables can then be passed through into the cavity behind (remembering to make the hole big enough for a hand clutching larger objects and to remove sharp edges.) Pick a hard-to-get-at location and disguise the wall with a decorative wood/painted/wall-papered panel, clutter, furniture, etc, to hide the safe front. An alcove in a room each side of a chimney breast could be bricked up part way for the safe/cavity, open shelves above, and a bed/furniture placed in front of the removable decoy wall covering. With my stash broken up and well hidden, I feel quite secure. I would never have one big, obvious safe on show where a brandished knife or gun threat can force its owner to open. I once bought a silver coin off someone on Ebay. He took me to his house in town and opened a massive safe in his living area to give it me! A very risky move I thought.

I got one of those shelf safes... installed the bolts into it. Bottom and back...I had several brick features in the house that were designed as toy boxes or blanket boxes...put the safe inside one...then poured cement around it...turned into an extremely secure hidden floor safe. Toys or blankets back on top...even if its found it will need 20 mins with a hammer and chisel to get out...its sitting in 50 pounds of cement. It is bonded to the main floor and solid brick with very little room to work.

What about a fairly obviously placed dummy safe? Like when you go to Brazil and you bring a dummy wallet with some limited cash and worthless store cards in it and a crappy broken phone to hand out if / when you get mugged. If you get burglarized or robbed, having a safe with some (relatively) cheap stuff in there could help give the criminals the sense that they have taken what you have to take and thus cues their getaway?

I found the attic is a good place to store some valuables. Will not protect from fire etc... but a thief would not know what is up there and don't know what part of attic you have valuables under insulation. Then also don't think most thieves would waste their time to search all parts of the attic.

Depends on how well you hide them, I suppose. You could make it look like an electrical box, or put it inside a cabinet. You could also put it down where the nightstand is, or behind a large piece of furniture that doesn't get moved often, like a couch.

Oh man that thing with the cabinet just made my day! The floor safe however is something that I ALWAYS wanted to have! Bad thing is... German houses are VERY well built and even though we have floors that are made of 20-30cm of pure concrete it is still not deep enough to but a floor safe in. The only way you are going to be able to install one of these here would be building a new house. Too bad... Great video! Best wishes, Adrian

@@LocksmithRecommended Hey Robert, you are welcome too! Safes are built differently here than in the U.S. but also housing security is much different. Here the focus is more on door and housing security than on safes but I guess that comes with the more "solid" built houses. But some nice security doors and windows in and you are pretty much set. In the U.S. doors and windows can simply not upgrade your security as much as here and I believe that is why you guys focus more on safes and other "inside" security measures. And here is the interesting thing: If you would have a floor safe in a German house, burglars would NEVER find it yet even look for it. Just beause it is not "common" here and the bad guys also know what is common. That is why I always wanted one :) would be the most secure hideway!

@jaynecobb3701
@jaynecobb3701 3 года назад
One issue with a floor safe is that they are in the floor so you have to get down on the floor and reach down into them. Putting things in cloth bags can make things easier to remove. Access to floor safes can be an issue especially for older folks.
@charlesstevenson5141
@charlesstevenson5141 2 года назад
Or you could use a rifle style floor safe. It has more of a foot print in the concrete as it is much longer in length but much more shallow (usually at a foot or less) so they are easier to reach into. Items could be organized and stored by water proof plastic containers like small Pelican cases. However if fire is your main concern, plastic won't be a viable option for storage as it would melt and destroy documents, most likely jewelry. All metal non polymer firearms are probably the only thing the plastic won't destroy. Said firearm(s) will likely never look the same but the melted plastic to protect from water and moisture can be chipped off and the firearm will still function properly. In reality, I don't store anything within my home or other structures on my property that I am not willing to loose including important documents.

Kinda related : I always get a kick out of seeing those stealthy product 'cans' for hiding money, jewelry, etc.. You unscrew the bottom of the hollow can and put it back on the shelf or in the fridge. Problem is, they're always something a burglar might want: a soda, some macaroni, a can of beer. Needs to be a can of hominy or prunes.

OK, two questions... Not trying to be a wiseguy here, I'm really interested in whether there's an answer. 1. If I were a burglar, I would look behind every painting or wall decoration in the house, and well as the back walls of closets, and any piece of furniture that isn't too big to get behind easily. 2. If I found a wall safe, and knowing that it's just anchored to a couple of 2x4 studs, I'd bust it out and take it with me. Any thoughts?
@LocksmithRecommended
@LocksmithRecommended Год назад
There are some wall stafes that are heavy duty and very very difficult to get out. But they need to be put into a space that was built knowing that the wall safe was going to go into it, because they're much deeper and much heavier.

I guess some folks need a safe due to their personal circumstances. I’ve got my precious metals stored at home in a manner that makes them reasonably fire-resistant and water-protected, and in a location where I could give an intruder 2-3 hours to ransack my home and odds are very good they still wouldn’t find them. Give your own circumstances a good review before purchasing an expensive safe and contracting people you may not know very well to install it.

Very good info. I work construction and if you install it before the concrete pour or even put a block out for it to many people will know about it and they even tell their friends. I bought a fire proof safe and wood framed it in and dry walled it in and got a big A/c vent and a air filter in front of it. It looks just like a return air for my A/C. nobody will ever notice I have 2 return air vents. My house was burglarized 2 time when we was at work. My Question for ACME Locksmith is the fire proof safe I got all my cash starts to mold after about a month. I live in Florida a very humid State. Is that normal?

campers usually have a boxed-in storage area under a seat/bed. I'd mount a wall or floor safe to the bed of the truck then cut a panel out of the floor of the camper inside that storage area for access to that safe. It's well hidden, securely mounted (bolted directly to the bed of the truck), and if you get a quality model it can be plenty strong too. Check the measurements of both the truck and the camper to determine if this solution is viable for your uses. Check out Sturdy safe for a quality, fairly priced safe option to suit your needs. If they don't have one they can make you whatever you need.

I knew this family who went 'OVERKILL'' with their safes. (Both in the basement) 1 a small lock box, inside a 100lbs + floor safe 2 inside 1 of 2-gun safes 3 inside a bank like vault. 4 that door 2 dials 1 went LRL the other RLR 5 the numbers went 1 2 3 the other 3,2 1 (NOT the real numbers) 6 that door behind a bookshelf that you need to pull out and push in a series of 10 books. Their son and daughter and biological siblings of the parents only ones to know the combo. *** The bother of one of the parents also had a vault as such. 4 numbers. The uncle's SS# He also had a door hidden in the basement behind drywall, with a dial that had 100#s the combo was 6 numbers. MONTH DAY YEAR. 19** 19** This guy and his uncle were born X number of years apart. (The door went into a hidden area for cars, a lift that went through a garden so you wouldn't know anything was there). The nephew the only person to know the combos.

Is it seriously that hard to waterproof these things? All of should take is a simple rubber gasket around the door frame, but I've only found one gun safe so far that was advertised as waterproof, and that was only up to two feet of water for a couple hours.
@LocksmithRecommended
@LocksmithRecommended Год назад
It can be. Almost all good safes have holes in the bottom to bolt them down. Some will have those holes covered with plastic, but if you want to use them, there goes the water resistance. www.acmelocksmith.com/articles/are-gun-safes-waterproof/

why don't they just paint it to look like a cabinet?
@randypuaatuua8104
@randypuaatuua8104 4 года назад
Seems that a simple paint job may not cover the overall profile of a safe too well. I could paint my Honda Civic the same color as a Mercedes but the profile of the car sticks out like a sore thumb Not to mention the customization costs of color, shade, etc. to match each persons space. Production time for custom works, demand for it, etc...? Probably not worth it to just offer a paint job. Over time the paint could chip off and reveal the safe as well

there are safe companies that do exactly that. Sturdy Safe for example (The company I prefer) offers this option on some of their larger safes so you can have 2 layers of security for your most valuable items.

This reviewer, I'm sorry to say, is quite naive if he thinks a safe behind a picture is a well concealed safe. The first thing burglers do, is to pull all the pictures off the walls as they look for a safe.
@abrahamalfaro7908
@abrahamalfaro7908 2 года назад
He's mentioning clichés, sure, but you can get creative with wall safes, too. Put it inside the pantry, for example. It can also go behind furniture or tall bookcases that don't get moved much.

Put the safe in your garage and throw a sheet over it no one will know what it is
@randypuaatuua8104
@randypuaatuua8104 4 года назад
I just can't think of putting a large safe in a garage that's in sight from the street. If I were robbing a house, I'd probably skip the garage. But if someone saw tools or other items in a garage and figured that'd be the fastest, easiest grab...I'd look under a sheet, open up cabinets, etc. Just seems like a bad idea if it's avoidable
@1FAST91SONOMA
@1FAST91SONOMA 3 года назад
if at all possible always avoid putting your safe in the garage. Garages are terrible options for many reasons. 1- temperature/humidity fluctuations suck. 2- theyre typically the least secure place in the house. 3- garages and kitchens are the top 2 most likely places in the house to have a fire. 4- safes tend to be visible in a garage. Garages should always be a last resort for safes

@BW-kv9wj

Jay Anderson. Not true. It depends what kind of safe. Some jewelry safes weigh over a ton and will take at least 8-12 hours to cut into with professional cutting tools and torches. And the noise that these tools make are extremely loud. Many of these jewelry safes have wireless alarms inside that detect movement or interior light change. Any type of movement or interior lighting change notifies the owner on cell phone.

I would be more interested is more foolproof ways to hide a wall safe (for example), not just covering it with a mirror or picture. That's the first place an experienced burglar would look. If they find it, they don't even have to open it there, they can just pry it loose and take it away with them.
@LocksmithRecommended
@LocksmithRecommended 3 года назад
That's a valid point. Most are not built very well. There are good ones with burglary ratings, but the wall really needs to have been planned with the installation of a wall safe in mind (bigger than a standard 2X4, extra wood, etc...).

better not hide a safe anywhere you may live then because theres a youtube video that shows every place imaginable including but nowhere near limited to hidden walls, in floors, in underground safe rooms, in the tool shed, in an a/c duct, in the attic, in the basement, in the water heater closet, in a dresser, etc. No place is ever perfectly safe.
