If you feel like building a 5" Freestyle Drone is too hard, you just need the right guidance.
So, I built a course with 71 highly detailed but simple modules, breaking down absolutely everything! They're can't be anything missing, if there is, I will add it. Which is better 5" Freestyle FPV, 3.5" FPV, or 3" Freestyle FPV? These sizes are popular choices among FPV Pilots, but there's more to consider than size when choosing your quadcopter. FPV Pilots tend to gravitate towards the 5" Freestyle Quad, often overlooking the potential of smaller drones like the 3.5" FPV. While the 5" Quad is a powerhouse, it's not always the right tool for every job.
My 5" Freestyle FPV is built with a Foxeer Mega frame, Foxeer F722 v4 flight controller, Foxeer Reaper F4 65a ESC, and the advanced DJI O3 Air Unit. It's powered by FlyFish RC Flash 2306 1750kv Motors and a Tattu R-Line 6S 1050mah Battery, with a tuning from the SupaFly 5" Freestyle Preset.
Comparatively, my 3.5" FPV uses a Foxeer Mega frame too, but with a Foxeer Reaper v4 AIO featuring an F745 processor and 45A BLS ESC flashed with BlueJay. It also includes the DJI O3 Air Unit and is powered by 1804 2400kv motors and a CNHL 6S 650mah Battery, tuned with the SupaFly 3-4" Freestyle Tune.
In practice, the smaller 3.5" Quad excelled in tighter spaces, offering more flexibility and creative expression during flight. On the other hand, the 5" Quad, while powerful, required more cautious handling to avoid mishaps.
The future of FPV isn't just about the 5" Quad but about choosing the right tool for the right job. Embrace versatility; don't limit yourself to a single drone size. Explore different models like the 3.5" FPV and 3" Freestyle FPV, equip them with high-quality components like Foxeer Flight Controllers and ESC's and DJI O3 Air Unit, and experience more time flying FPV.

Completely agree with this video. And don't forget the noise, I live in an urban area and even a 2.5" with O3 seems appelling.

My arsenal are 5 inch 6s for bando basher, 3.5 inch 4s for park flyer, 2 inch 2s for backyard flyer and a tiny whoop for indoor. Every quad build have their own habitat

One of my favorites builds is a 4" setup on 5" arms. Most frames try to make the design as compact as absolutely possible, but I've found the wider stance with room between the props has a different feel in the air that I enjoy flying.

@@sixtofive too bad there's a huge difference in arm thickness between my Apex 4" and my Apex HD 5" arms. I'd love to try this.

@@MadDragon75 Yeah, definitely won't work as well with heavier frames. Do they make 6" arms for the Apex? Could try the same concept, but with 5" props. Mine was on a power pick frame from fpvcycle, so it was light to begin with. Auw with a 4s 850 was 265 grams.

I really like my 2.5 inch micro, it runs on 2s and is more than enough for the spots I can fly. A bigger quad would be better but I simply don't have much access to spots where I could fly a 5 inch or even a 3.5 inch.
@DarrenAllatt
@DarrenAllatt 11 месяцев назад
is a bigger quad actually "better" if it sits on your shelf and gathers dust? no. Bigger is not better, that's a fallacy. Why use a drill when a precision screwdriver is what's actually needed. what is better is using the right tool for the right job.

My racing times with my 3.5" Foxeer Caesar are as fast as my 5" times. Not sure if that says more about the tight tracks at Eastside or if 5" quads have more power than I can handle! Prob a bit of both hehe
@DarrenAllatt

Maybe worth trying a Motor output limit or throttle limit on your 5" and gradually increase it. Sounds like you are blowing out your lines on the 5", but the 3" gets you tighter as its less powerful

My fleet ranges from 65mm whoops up to a couple of 5" freestyle rigs, and the ones I reach for most are my 3" (approx 170g auw) and my 2" 2s whoop. I fly the 5" quads very rarely and never if there are people around.

@@DarrenAllatt It's an odd one. Started life as a Meteor85 pro, when I smashed the FC in a crash and the ELRS stopped working, I rebuilt it with a JHEMCU 16mm stack (F405 FC and 2-4s 13A ESC) and a Happymodel OVX300 VTX. Camera is Caddx Ant, and the canopy is the 3D printed TPU one from the Happymodel Crux3 (I cut off the inbuilt mount for the Go2/ Peanut, and the resulting canopy isn't much heavier than stock but is basically indestructible). RX is a generic ceramic antenna one. Frame is stock Meteor85, as are the 1103 10,000kv BetaFPV motors. Props... I didn't like the original 2020 quad blades, very floaty, but when you cut off two of the blades to make them biblades, this is the best prop I've found for this type of whoop. Weight went up from 47g (stock) to 53g, and the additional 6g have addressed all of the durability issues (except the frame of course, but that's already acceptable). It's got plenty of power and doesn't really notice the extra 6g.
@yonseimatt
@yonseimatt 11 месяцев назад
Oh, obviously I had to drill the frame for stack screws- I just used one of those little carbon 16-20-25 adapters as a jig. Whole stack sits above the battery tray and just fits under the canopy (which has a big flat cross, so it can't really stick up higher than the original AIO would have done. Flies noticeably better with the F405 than the original F411.

Wish I heard you mention the first set of motors the first time. I ended up buying them and yes. I'm stuck on a light battery. Exactly what I didn't want. It's nice to toss the 1200 on both. My 5in with the 550mah isn't my personal choice. Seems to be exactly what I was looking for, but someone stated the motors where to heavy. SMH thanks for the review.

the motors you mentioned that were on your build originally. I got because I was told the 23mm was to heavy when it's clearly not. Don't get me wrong the xnovas 1804 rip but they require a smaller battery.

A 23mm motor is a 2306, it’s not designed for a 3.5” or a 4” - they’re 5” motors and are way too heavy. What size battery are you putting on a 3.5”

Recalling your car comparison, which I like, I would add Lotus cars, built lightweight and agile, and dont require a hefty engine to compete with heavier sportscars like 911s, and driving fun is definitively bigger on the lightweight car. Thanks for challenging the "standards"!

change the motor idle percentage on the motors tab in betaflight to 4.5% or even 4%, that will remove the floatyness. Perhaps you also have too high KV for it
