I laughed out loud at this. Your impression of the Dutch accent it spot-on as well. Thankfully, some Dutch people (myself included) are aware of their lack of tact, and are attempting to be a bit more diplomatic. But overall... yeah, we really are like that.

Dutch diplomacy is the simplest thing in the world. You have arguments we can't take down, we go along with you. If you come with theories, no problem, we will continue building your theory until you actually have arguments to stand on.

I didn’t realise how ‘rude’ we are until I made some English friends. They sometimes do find me overly direct and their ‘politeness’ sometimes makes me feel like everyone is hiding what they really think. I try to pay more attention to what I say when I’m there . (Their hair does look stupid though, and their shoes 😜)

i am beginning to understand why so many Dutch-Canadians do not spend much time in the Netherlands - can't take the "diplomacy" . Some, not all, are rather full of themselves around here where the motto: "If you ain't Dutch you ain't much is fairly common. Apologies to my Dutch -Canadian friends, but you can take it, right?

Yes, this is partly true and partly false. That the Dutch are bad at diplomacy is belied by their political system where no party ever has a majority and compromise is the normal way in which things work. We have no shutdowns due to fights between parties, although coalition forming can take a long time. But during that time, the old cabinet runs the government still. So yes, we are direct, but we definitely don't suck at diplomacy. In fact, being open prevents problems from festering unseen. And about those crass comments: you can expect those from any drunk person.

It might not seem to the rest of the world that the truth is that in the Netherlands there are regional differences. He described Holland, the part with Amsterdam, I come from Limburg the most southern part, the bit with Maastricht in it. We are far more tactfull and we tend to insult people in a far more subtle way. When you talk to us you have to read between the lines. I prefer the tactless type, you know where you stand. And please be aware that I, as many dutch people, do not live in Holland but in the Netherlands (the low countries).

About honesty, as small as we are. (I guess you speak Dutch as I do and yet we communicate in English so others can read it) there are mayor difference in regions. Religion plays a role in it. An acquintance of mine taught in the bible belt to children on a school. After a year he ran away as he said. No openess child like play highly disciplined. Well, totally tight assed even the children. They where thaught very early on how to hide emotions. ("controll emotions") He said in one case something happened in the class but his back was writing something on the blackboard and he did not see. As he turned around and looked it was totally quiet expressionless faces as if nothing happened.
