The sheet metal one was intermediate and the rebar one was advanced.

That intermediate one would've been better if you had stacked the wood first, then drilled the holes with a longer bit all the way through. Could have glued them together as you stacked to keep them in line.

I made a 9 foot bed out of some spare bricks we had laying around - only cost 50-100 for mortar and some brick tools. I’ve never done bricks in my life, but it came out really nice and wasn’t too difficult to figure out

Why not just drive the rebar pins afterward? Seems too hard to get the holes to line up. Just get an long drill.

Some great options there. Some suggestions - use cardboard in the base to cut down the initial weeds, it will breakdown. If putting the planter alongside the house ensure you leave a 75mm to 100mm gap between the planter and the house to prevent termite ingress.

On the advanced put galvanized hanger strap from center line to center line on the bottom to prevent bowing before you fill it up. The weight of soil will push it out over time. Also recommend filling it 2/3 w/ yard debris like logs and branches so you can spend less on top soil. I filled mine with ~12 of the super size bags after settling and a bunch of tree trimming

I love all 3 of them. But the 3rd one is fantastic.

On the second one you usually stack you tiers then drill holes. Then drive rebar through all of them stacked all the way down much easier.

The best way to do it all is rebar last..lay out use a couple of 6 inch screws to hold and the drill thru and drive the rebar last! Work smarter not harder!

It would have been nice to have seen this video before I started woodworking. My first project was a 4x8 3 foot tall cedar and metal planter very similar to your advanced model. After filling the planter with way too much soil that I had to carry through my townhouse to get to the backyard, I immediately started on a 8ft x 14 ft deck. I must have learned something from watching some youtube videos because they are both still holding strong 3 years later and look great. Keep up the great videos. Congrats on saving your kid from injury.

great planters, if you paint the inside of the wood planters with bitumen paint, it drastically slows down any rotting from contact with soil, i built mine when i was 22 i am now 36 only ever had to replace the top layer once, i stop with bitumen before the top layer so you cant see it, then you can stain or paint the rest your desired color

I think the last one is my favorite! And to be honest, I think it looks easier than the intermediate version!😆 I could build that. I'm not efFing with that rebar!

Stack all your boards, get a longer drill bit, and drill through everything at once. Way faster and easier

Well, that was interesting. I am on my 4th season of 4 raised garden beds. I build them 3' x 6' & 18" tall out of scrap lumber I had & purchased 36 6" wide cedar fence pickets (75 cents each), screws & potting soil for under $40. FOR ALL FOUR BEDS. And, BTW, for the cost of the lumber you say you spent on the "intermediate" bed you can buy 3 -5 six foot long & 2-3 foot wide galvanized stock tanks or raised bed tanks for the same cost or less at a feed store. AND THERE IS NO BULDING REQUIRED.

I would tie the “advanced” version right in the midpoint so it’s not blowing when you load the dirt

They look good. Would you be inclined to do a raised bed? Where I live its essential to raise the bed unless you're planting right in the ground like the first one, and even then, not if its wood.

Id definitely say the "intermediate" one was actually the "advanced" one and vice versa

Staggered is correct, but the rebar is unnecessary… 4x4 posts, build each layer with 5 1/2 grx structural screws at corners, then place each layer on and attach with a few 5 1/2 grx screws and call it a day… with each layer weighing around 50 pounds, it is not going anywhere… mine have been going strong for 6 years and the wood will give out before the screws

Hows the plastic patio holding up?

I love it! Question would the metal get hot feom sitting in the sun all day and when you went to garden, you would gwt burned? Or does that metal not heat up?

Couple of things: 1. Why not put a topping on the beginner one like on the other two? 2. Why use rebar at all? Can't you put taller wood pieces on the corners like you did for the beginner one? 3. The advanced one is my favorite and it seems easier than the intermediate one.

the intermediate build would go so much smoother if you had laid all your pieces and then use a long drill to make those rebar holes. You worked harder, not smarter there.

Tip: Don’t put your garden between a big bush/tree and the house. Plants typically need lots of sunshine. Plan to put your gardens inline with the most sun.

should be using TB 3 instead of 2. 3 is more waterproof.

Putting untreated wood on the ground that close to the house seems like it will attract termites into your wall.

I think I would have done the advanced about half that tall.Personally that's just me

All he needed to do was place all the wood down clamp them straight.. and then drill the smaller holes he had before with a long wood bit. Then he could have drove the rebar in with an SDS ground rod hammerdrill bit... he's injured should have been working smarter not harder..

Reminder to finish out that basement and add a full bathroom with a tub down there to make this a proper house!!

Egads. Okay, this is probably different where you're located, but I'm up in the PNW and for the love of all that is holy...please tell me you used pressure treated lumber to build those otherwise they're going to rot within 1-2 years (max). Also, it's preferable to put the gravel under the whole bed if possible. Costs you an extra $10-$30 but saves you so much time. Couple bonuses for doing that 1. keeps the boards from sitting in water and rotting faster, 2. give you the ability to level the boards very quickly, vs. dinking around with shoving a little here, a little there, etc. 3. it actually will provide drainage for your plants (and therefore more flowers/fruits/veggies) since the roots aren't sitting in wet dirt. Finally, you can/should build these with some sort of vapor/water barrier between the wood sides and the dirt you put in there (note...leave the bottom "open" so the water has somewhere to go). I've seen thicker plastic and even left over building vapor barrier used to keep the dirt out of direct contact with your wood. This'll give you a much much longer lifespan for the box and you won't see it since it'll, most likely, be covered by the dirt you use. Also, not sure I'd put the box you built right up against the house. You're invite pests if you do. Up here we have carpenter ants that just love things like these. I'm guessing where you are, you may be running into termite issues. I love what you've done for this house, taking it from "Shabby" to "Chic" and all the sweat equity you're putting in will pay off, but there are a few choice that make me go "Hrm." Also, you're hair's looking aces bruh! Nice you can show it off. Looking good sir! Keep up the great work. Even when I'm yelling at my screen with "WHAT THE H.E. Double toothpicks is he doing!" I'm still enjoying your work!

What I don't understand is why you're putting the plastic sheeting at the bottom of your planting beds. You won't have weeds growing under your planting bed... You're obstructing the free drainage of water inside the planting bed, so you'll have a build up of moisture that'll kill your plants.

I don"t know why you put them in this order, the second one is better, harder, and more expensive then the third one

That tree needs to be removed. It looks so out of place. Weeds need to be removed from around the patio. Just remove all the pavers. It was not put together correctly. They are uneven and got weeds growing between the pavers. All of the planters are in the wrong places. The second one will splash on the dirt when it rains. Creating mud on the siding. Should have just stuck with 1 design. They should at least match. I can tell his wife did not approve these planters. He did it on his own. The whole back yard just looks horrible.

I can't stand those weed barriers. Prior owners had a ton it put in and I wondered forever why I kept having pieces of what looked like trash bags all over my yard. Figured out it was the weed barrier after years of breaking down coming through the surface. Took me a while to dig all of it up. I'd never use that stuff.
