Points/Condenser to Electronic Ignition, 3 ways to easily and cheaply convert to electronic ignition in most small engines, Briggs 5HP as example, thanks for watching!!!!
Damn right, kids and young adults need to toss the computers and start using their hands or this country will be doomed, that’s the future of the population sadly.
Thanks for the great tips! I had an old 5hp Briggs with points, and it wasn't firing. I pulled a coil off of a newer 5hp Briggs parts mower, slapped it on there, and it didn't work. The mounting holes were correct, but the curvature angle was wrong where it rides next to the flywheel(where you set the air gap). I really wanted to save time and money, so I used a grinder to change the angles of the new coil so it had the same shape as the old one. Much to my surprise it worked! Engine runs great again
A nice save but it is 'too easy' the get the points working again with a points file and adjusting the point gap. 9 times out of 10 they just need cleaning.
Your information is very helpful. Thank you. I had already installed new points and condenser and a coil on my 3.5 Briggs and Stratton and still no spark.i set the points at .20 and used a business card for the coil. No spark
Well done, thanks. The wife thought I was on the phone. She swears you and I sound just alike. At least she leaves me alone, at that point. Happy Thanksgiving.
Great video, simple and easy to understand! You show a single wire from magnetron to kill switch, but my new magnetron included a 2-wire version? If one wire goes to kill switch, where does other wire go? Thank you for an excellent presentation.
I've done pretty well with the atom and nova modules. There was one case where I used one of them (can's remember which it was) on a Briggs 5hp and it the timing was too advanced. Made it rough to start. Probably a knock off that wasn't quite right. Used a Briggs Magnetron and it was fine.
Most people want to replace points and condensor with an electronic ignition. But I would like to see it the other way round to convert an electronic ignition to points and condensor
Like you said, I never had any problems with the points setup but the newer short blocks don't have the place for points so Magnetrons it is. And I want the bvane for cooling so the Magnetron takes all the confusion out of everything. Never knew about the yellow add-on but that's a neat deal. Good old 5-horse 'L' head. Pick me one!
Yeah I like the points system too, I've never really had problems except for the usually needing to clean the points at random times. yeah i prefer having the cooling fin in too. They are hard to find the yellow add on, i got a couple that came with some NOS short blocks i got off ebay. I just got this one a couple months ago, doesn't smoke at all! Thanks for Watching!!!
Hi great video! I have an old Briggs 8hp that I want to convert to electronic ignition. I cant seem to find the correct parts to do so. Could you point me in the right direction?
Found your video on 3 ways to convert your 5HP B&S to electronic ignition very interesting. I have the same engine, I’d like to know where you found the replacement points type coil for the original B&S points coil. My coil doesn’t have a p/n on it. Looks like your points coil may have been a Sterns?
ok so if i buy the new modern coil can i just remove the old one and replace it with the new and itll run or do i need the module aswell as the new coil? or would i need the module if i wanted to use the oil style coil? cheers
You only need the module if your engine had points and your using a coil made for points/condenser, if you replace the coil with the electronic ignition coil (magnetron) the module or points is no longer needed. Thanks for Watching!!!
Hi there. I have an old MerryTiller but the coil has three legs. Can I get an electronic ignition coil for that? Failing that what’s the part number for the first fix you did? Cheers for the video!
The only way you can upgrade that to the electronic coil is to change the flywheel out to the newer style, i talked about this in a video on rebuilding a model 6B, the magnets are different on the older flywheels so the newer coils will not work, done tried it. Thanks for Watching!!!
Ok so I would like to switch aswell, I have 2 wires coming out of the points one going to the coil, then one going up somewhere near the governor leading up to the switches on the snow blower throotle, so I sorta got lost which wire do I cut?
Ok you will connect the wire coming from the switch on the throttle directly to the coil, that would be the easiest way of doing that. and just cut the wires off at the points cover. Thanks for Watching!!!
Taryl says you have to flip the new electronic coils around backwards in Lou of having the flywheel remagnetized with reverse polarity @ Briggs factory. Maybe y'all are using different coils.
I got a 18 hp 1 cylinder with a coil like they put on cars back in the day. I tried what you got. I have done a bunch of them. Mine fired all the time like a furnace. Couldn't get timing
Same thing for the most part, there are electronic coils for replacing the old type, and some coils will interchange with new ones. Thanks for watching
Ignition coil For Briggs& Stratton 793295 398593 591420 496914 793281 Replace ment coil off e bay. ???????? $16.xx. too bad they dont put the distance between the coil mounting post screws as that is where the problem is as flywheel on 2, 3, 3.5... 4? hp is smaller than the 5 HP engines so the coil is different... hole spacing for mount.
The one i ordered isn't listed now, but if you get on ebay (or amazon) and type in 397358 coil, you can get the original style one for like 25 or a aftermarket one about 15 or so, just make sure the one in the picture shows square/rectangle holes and not round/oval and it will work, unless they have the wrong picture up. Hope this helps! Thanks for Watching!!!
@@fnaguitarplayer9 i ordered one with oval holes because i couldnt find one with rectangular ones. But the number matches and it has pretty good reviews. Thanks for saving me $100!
@@THS033 I hear ya, you may have to take a round file and file the holes slightly to get it to work. I don't understand why the part number crosses to that one.
@@fnaguitarplayer9 im not sure either, but in the description it says that it'll fit my engine model so i guess ill see whenever the package comes. Thanks alot for the advice!
The plate that attaches to the coil is stationary, these engines use internal governor parts, these are not air vane governors like push mower engines. Thanks for Watching!!!
@@fnaguitarplayer9 Actually some old Briggs engines have air vane governors. I got a couple of old rototillers from the 1960's with that type of set up.
hello my friend, been watching you for a while. maybe its just me but i think you need a different microphone. and please links to the stuff you use would be nice.
Appreciate that. Some have said that before, i upgraded to a new camera this spring, a cannon rf82 i think it is, and it does have a option for a external mic, i just use the built in mics. I can start doing that on specific parts, sometimes i do but not always. Thanks for the ideas, i'm always up for suggestions. Thanks for Watching!!!
Actually these 5hp bs engines Have a huge flaw And thats not the ignition Matter of fact its the poorly Made fuel delivery For folks that are not familiar The carb mounted on the fuel Tank and the brass/plastic extension pipe sucks in fuel To the carb when the diaphram or membrane is in the mood As it ages and sits it gets Worse and once the screen is Plugged its all over But the spark usually survives So i would not worry too much About those points Its the fuel supply that is Really the cave mans idea Just my 2cents
Old-fashioned point system produces a hotter spark a nice blue violet spark for the spark plug the electronic system coil produces a weak white Spark electronic coil is not very reliable
