This video was very challenging to make as it was my first vlog type video and filming outside "in action" is a challenge. But I enjoyed every second of making it. Please excuse the lower video and audio quality caused by low light conditions in the morning and strong wind. I hope it will inspire some of you to find ways to reduce your blood sugar and improve your diabetes management. One thing to keep in mind is take you blood sugar with the meters. I have a Dexcom G6 also and sometimes the machine it self can be wrong. An example is Dexcom is telling me 8.9mmol/L and the Onetouch Verio is telling me 6.7mmol/L wait 20mins check it again with nearly the same results. To be honest I trust the blood sugar tests over the CGM's but realize it's not practical to be taking my blood sugar 18 times in a day. I know everyone is different and stress plays a very important role in blood sugars. I had collage exams in one day woke up did not eat anything [because I forgot too] gave my normal insulin with a that is to cover 40grams of carbs per meal. Did not go low at all the entire day was actually high around the 10.6mmol/L area. It was till the next day that I started to pay for it. Was on every Diabetics favorite ride "Roller Coasters of Blood Sugar".

Just wanted to say thank you for your great videos. I'm a newly diagnosed T1D (at age 38!) and I have been so underwhelmed by the amount of information my medical team provides; it's nowhere near enough to gain control over my BG. I have learned so much from your videos and a few other great youtubers. Thank you for helping me navigate these first rocky months

Thanks for this video! I am 65 and type 2 for 23 years caused by a medication I had taken for years. Anyway, the way I lower my sugar levels quickly is by working in my vegetable garden, which I can do year around because I’m in NW Florida. I have a large garden and use a hand plow to keep the rows weeded. It really turns out to be aerobic exercise with the benefit of producing food for myself and 3 other families .

Thank you for this video. I am type 2 diabetic for nearly 20yrs. Initially I didn't know much about controlling BG except cutting on carbs and doing aerobic exercise. I helped me very well to keep my BG and HbAic well under control. Now I Amma 71yrs. and walks and jogs for 1hr.(to raise the heart rate) every other day 4 days a week. I enjoy my food of course with moderation and my HbA1c is at 5.5. Excersise helps tremendously, especially in the morning to keep BG low and to God given life. Great video Tom. Real down to earth practical advice. I am from Asia currently living in Africa.

Interesting experiment. That said non insulin pump users should keep in mind that Tom's "basal" insulin is actually Humalog being slowly dispensed by his pump based upon the rate he sets. Our basal insulin, however, is a bit more complicated as it has been modified to release at a certain rate depending upon the brand and type. The activity curve of Tom's insulin pump supplied basal insulin is much more predictable/repeatable than the chemically modified basal insulins which some of us use. Those insulins are far less predictable and their effect upon bG, especially fasting bG, far more difficult to predict.

Love this! I currently opt for a fast walk. Usually 30 minutes is needed if I want my BG to lower and stay lower. Any shorter and my BG immediately goes right back up afterwards. I also live somewhere where there’s a significant winter season, so sometimes it’s a walk in the apartment with jumping jacks and lunges mixed in.

I have learned a lot from watching you. I really appreciate the information you share. Because of you I asked my doctor for a Dexcom G6 and it has really helped me control my BS. My last Hb1c was 5.6. I am Type 2 and I have a much easier time keeping my BS level in the summer. I have a dog so daily walks are mandatory plus I swim 4 or more days a week. In the winter the dog walks can be much shorter because of the cold and ice. If I keep my carbs low I use very little insulin. I am in my 60’s so in the winter time I won’t risk slipping .
@tonytoo9999
@tonytoo9999 3 года назад
Very interesting comparison. An advantage of owning a dog is that I need to go for a walk before I eat breakfast and although it’s not always much fun in Northern Britain, the cold/rain does encourage me to walk quicker ==> I might stroll in Brazil 😎

Hi Tom. I am not a diabetic but I crave sugar & have to eat something sweet after lunch & dinner every day. Then I feel bad because I think it is probably hard on my kidneys. I’m healthy at 62 , not overweight, and walk daily. I was searching youtube to find out what could bring down my blood sugar just because I eat the sweets a lot . I don’t even check my levels but feel that they’re high because of the sugar intake. I found you while searching and really enjoyed your experiments with walking/jogging. I have been walking after supper for 2 miles so hopefully that helps me stay healthy. I also realize how serious this can be after reading all of the comments and I want to take care so it doesn’t become a serious problem for me. Thank you for sharing and helping so many!

Hi Tom! The release of this video's timing could not be better as I work toward better BG management. With the Dexcom G6 and Omnipod Dash Insuling pump - my hgA1c declined quickly from 10.4 to 7.2 in 3mos! But I would not have known to ask for these had it not been for your videos on Diabetes Tech. Numbers are nice, but what that translated to is the gradual recovery from brain fog (now gone!!) and profound fatigue. Your videos have "bailed me out" many times with focused and accurate content! Next...looking at beginning to exercise again! Your identifying why, what and how much intensity has helped me to understand how to proceed. There is much contrary information on this topic....Tried out your plan today, being sluggish post a viral infection,and sure enough my insulin sensitivity increased and BG did correct below 100! Looking forward to adding routine exercise to increase insulin sensitivity back into my daily routine! Thanks for your notable contributions to the DM community. Keep them coming!!

THNX Tom for this nice peace of info! I find that walking in the morning doesn't do a thing for me... I have to bring my heart rate at least above the 120 before anything happens. But like you the afternoon and especially evening a normal 30 min walk will bring my blood sugar way down as well! I always thought it was just me (being the only T1D in the family) I just love the knowledge sharing

This week I have been dealing with very high blood sugars post lunch and requiring a lot more insulin than normal at that time. So yesterday I decided to do a HIIT sprint training 30 second sprint 30 second recovery in the morning. My heart rate hit 190 and I did still drop through out the workout. My workout in total was about 8 minutes of all out sprinting with walking/jogging recovery. My insulin sensitivity is drastically improved even today. I like your scientific approach as it shows everyone is a little different and may get better results from different types of activity. The benefits to exercise are going to continue to pay dividends for well after the first 24 hours.

i use a nordic cross trainer type stepping machine, if i go flat out for 7 mins, my sugar will drop from 7.7 to around 5.2 1 hour later ....... it works very well for me, since i dont have the time to go walking morning and night. But using the stepping machine and include some weight training ..... my sugar level is under control. Twice a day is very beneficial. Sometimes skipping breakfast and exercising works wonders too. As long as i do SOMETHING ..... i can get a good result ........ doing nothing gives you nothing but high sugar levels ..... remember that

Smelly, How would your blood sugar be high for the ENTIRE DAY! What are you eating, and how many times do you eat? My blood sugar doesn't raise too high after a meal unless, I consumed rice, and split peas; most legumes, and especially split peas raise my blood sugar. Also mangoes, bananas, and anything that's made with all purpose and whole wheat flours. I only consumed rice once in a while, together with a big salad or mixed vegetables which are low in carbs. My blood sugar may spiked to 11. mmol/L but within 1 hour and 15 minutes it's down to 8.0 or 7.9 mmol/L. You'll have to learn how to cut carbohydrates! I'm very sorry for you. May God help and bless you 🙏

Another great video, thanks ! I never really heard about the different effects of aerobic or anaerobic exercices on your blood glucose... Could you provide a reference for this (or why not produce another video) ?
@zylmanu
@zylmanu 3 года назад
My personal experience is that different activities have very different effects. Swimming or biking will always decreases the blood glucose, but running will typically increase it by 50mg/dL in the first 30 minutes, have it roughly stable in the next 30 minutes, and only start to really lower it for longer runs. Recently I have been running at a slower pace with my cousin and I have been surprised not to see this usual spike. So I wonder whether this has something to do with this aerobic/anaerobic difference. However, I doubt I can be doing anaerobic physical efforts when I run during roughly 1 hour... ?

@Antaios632
@Antaios632 3 года назад
I want to say this is a bit of a misconception because the only way glucose gets out of your bloodstream and into your muscles is if you have sufficient insulin in your body. If you don't have enough insulin and you exercise, you can actually accelerate metabolic acidosis. In the case where, for example, you've forgotten to take your basal insulin (like Lantus) or you've had some kind of pump or site malfunction that keeps your basal dose from going in, exercise is not likely to be helpful and may even be harmful. I don't mean to discourage exercise, but I don't like the idea that exercise can be an alternative to taking insulin or that there's anything wrong with just taking the amount of insulin that keeps your blood glucose in range.

2 things I do to bring my blood sugar down are, 1) drink lots of water. This will help the kidneys expel sugars from the blood stream. & 2) not recommended by doctors but it helps me is drink a zero carbohydrate energy drink. They can sometimes help the body burn sugars especially if you walk or exercise for 20-30 minutes. The caffeines in them will also help the kidney to expel the water you drank along with the sugars. This 2nd method should only be used if nothing else is working & maybe you can't get to a Doctor for a while. It helps me sometimes. & be ready to catch your fall if glucose levels come down to fast!

Another fantastic video Tom, on the loop system I use I have eating soon temporary target. For me it is set at 5.0 mmol/l for 1 hour, I use this prior to eating, does the Tandem system do this? Also, I'd love to see how you deal with much higher levels say >13.0

The normal dawn effect raises blood sugar earlier in the morning and then drops it slowly through late morning.

You might find it funny, but I realised by chance that watching culinary videos reduces my BG level! The problematic thing is that it usually happens when my BG is in range so I go low 😅 Obviously it is not as efficient as hiking, which I usually do to exercise, but it is very strange

Walking and squats help me get my blood glucose down. It something rises when I start exercising and then it drops like crazy.

Your videos are very thoughtful and well researched. I would like to hear your thoughts on total insulin goals. A normal pancreas secretes between 30-50 IU per day, so a HgA1c target below 6% should be combined with a total insulin target below 50 IU/day for best control. What are your thoughts on this?

nice video. in my case, 30 minutes of walk and i am at 85-90mg/dl(40mg down). May i ask what is your watch ? I love it and would like to buy it. The screen is big and you can see clearly what's happening.

there is also another good way to reduce blood sugar, with HIIT Tabata protocol, with interval based on 60 minutes at 60-80% of your max heart rate and 90 second of slow movement. You can apply this protocol while running on tapis or sitting bicycle

If you have ketones, how can you exercise without them skyrocketing? That's happened to me twice and I ended up very sick. I was trying to get my blood sugars down. Instead they went up and the ketones went very high.

Excellent video Tom, thanks. I was wondering, will you be making any videos soon about the Freestyle Libre 3, particularly its features, whether it is an improvement on the Freestyle Libre 2, and whether it will be possible now or in the future to use the Freestyle Libre 3 directly with a smartwatch (without having to use third party software or devices)?

At the moment I am being treated by the doctor for my diabetes because everything is conflicting insulin is making me put on a lot of weight even though I exercise everyday when I go into hypo eating high sugar foods doesn't always raise my sugar levels when My levels are high sometimes they won't go down other times they drop quickly from a 15 to a 5 within 30minutes however I do have other health issues and I have had most of my bowels removed and a lot of reconstruction to replace them which puts me on a restricted diet
