Learn three different ways to go about making skirts based off 18th Century petticoats. Bonus segment just exalting the glory of Outlander tartan. I feel like this video is a bit of a mess. I guess that's what happens when you start filming well before moving, try to edit it during the move, decide you'd rather spend your time drawing bird people, then have to scramble and finish post-move. 🤷‍♀️ But I hope the actual instructions are clear enough. 😅 Thanks for your patience!
EDIT: Serendipity! Procrastination paid off! By sheer coincidence, orders for a weaving of Mist and Stone tweed opened up literally yesterday (12/18/20)
Update (12/23/20): They are currently taking orders for three different tweeds. The Mist and Stone skirt tweed, the green plaid for Claire's S1 dress, and the plaid for Jaime's coat! Orders close January 2nd.

"Never math until you've confirmed that you can't find the answer by folding something" is one of the most inspiring things I've ever heard (also I'm not even the biggest tartan nut but holy hell is that one beautiful)

Hey, the mods of the facebook group asked me to let you know that they've had a huge amount of people request to join, but not answer the questions. They said you can mention me in the question box, and ignore the rest. 😊 Update (12/23/20): They are currently taking orders for three different tweeds. The Mist and Stone skirt tweed, the green plaid for Claire's S1 dress, and the plaid for Jaime's coat! Orders close January 2nd. Update (12/20/20): This took me while to figure out. The wool I made my Outlander skirt from is not precisely screen accurate. It is the screen accurate Mist and Stone pattern, but woven as a tartan. That gives it a smoother finish, with a bit of a sheen. The fabric they will be weaving next is Mist and Stone, but as tweed, so it will be heavier, with a lot more texture and subtle color variation. It will be, for all intents and purposes, the closest possible to a screen accurate fabric.

I am a software engineer. Your pleating technique is almost the same algorithm as a binary search! It was super intuitive for me. If/when I ever end up actually making a pleated skirt, this will be super helpful.

The method of pleating you call "finding the middles" is the sane one I call "divide and conquer." I teach sewing methods to a lot of new/newer costumers, and the idea that they can easily conquer something scary like pleats seems to reassure them.

When making a Scottish kilt for my daughter I visited the older lady that hand makes them for dancers around the country. No maths required really. I was shown how to use the tartain itself to make/measure for pleats. Kilts are primarily knife pleats running in one direction. You pleat to show either the pattern of the tartain or just one small section that is repeated making horizontal stripes (military pleating). Both are done by eye and then pressed and pinned. We use a rajah cloth to do final pressing which sets them semipermanently. A huge hem is always added so it can be let down several times as child grows as kilts are very expensive and often have more than one matching velvet waistcoat to go with it when sold or passed on. Yardage on hem ranged from about 3-4 yards when she was 3yrs to about 7 as a teen . kilt pleats very deep for a true kilt. Shallow ones are only for tourists and fashion market.

*That is in accordance with what I've observed at the Caledonian Club Games, Santa Rosa and Pleasanton, CA, USA.* On my own 30" waist, I would anticipate 90" gross circumference, meaning 3 yd wool to accommodate the 3"+5" plaits from the 8" center "panel" for the _sporran,_ or belt-pouch. Machine-sewing thick enough wool would force a SAILRITE® LS-1, which has heavier needles (spec., the SCHMETZ-NADELN® 135x7) available for it than my 𝒲𝒽𝒾𝓉𝑒® Model 1, which is Singer 15x1-compatible but supported only up to the 110/18 needle size.

The last skirt is a feat of engineering, seriously. Congratulations on acquiring your dream tartan! It's really beautiful and that elusive gray-brown color is a dream. As for an idea... How about another capsule wardrobe? They are always out of this world when it comes to details. Maybe a popular aesthetic meets history? Like cottagecore that can go rural edwardian or chemise a la reigne or maybe more ethnical...

Wow!!!!! Those last two skirts felt like watching a dream come to life?? The Outlander-inspired skirt is what every plaid skirt I've ever bought at a thrift store (or Forever 21...) has WISHED it could be. The most sumptuous wool tartan. The muted color palette that could easily be drab, except for how so subtle and complex it is, how high quality the material is. A tartan pleated skirt that manages not to evoke any notion of "school uniform" in my mind because it's so utterly sophisticated. This is the skirt that I've always wanted and never dared to hope could actually exist :'O And the reversibility of the taffeta skirt... For a while I've kinda wanted to make a "go-to special occasion skirt" out of taffeta or maybe brocade, but I'm put off it by the thought that I'd practically have to wear it for every special occasion for the rest of my life in order to justify the cost, and I'm not quite willing to resign myself to that... monotony? And to me, the thought of "both sides of this fabric are too beautiful to go to waste" would just feel discouraging, I wouldn't be willing to commit to one or the other and so the fabric would languish in my stash forever. But not you!!!! You had the very audacity to say, "I'm going to wring every last drop of value I can out of this luxurious material and turn it into something that is strikingly opulent, and at the same time thrifty in its versatility," and you CRUSHED IT. Like, you are truly throwing down the gauntlet. I am inspired by your daring feats of sewing and engineering. This sewing video is making me think about the kind of person I want to be. Oh my god.

The Outlander skirt is outstanding! The pleat pattern looks fantastic, useful pleat maths. I know flat chain has been suggested, but you might also consider drain / ball chain. It comes in a variety of weights, and could be threaded into your hem facing smoothly
@menuettte
@menuettte 3 года назад
Your pinning to determine pleats technique (pin the ends, find the center) is similar to how we quilters put on long borders to our quilts. It insures an even border all the way around that lays flat . It prevents the border strip from stretching causing weird puckers, and allows you to ease in or out the differences when you are sewing it on. Especially helpful when sewing on 80" to 108" long borders.

For what it’s worth, very high end, haute couture, in fact, requires a soft hem. A line of lambswool is laid in the hem so that it won’t be pressed razor sharp by a careless maid. The choice depends on the garment, but your silk skirt is exactly the kind of garment that would get the soft fold hem.

That's pretty wonderful. Oh... You can use Drapery weight rope along the bottom inside also. I'd check the weight of both the chain and the drapery weight rope. The drapery weight rope is like a knit tube with fishing weights evenly spaced in it. It's used to weight curtains and keep it evenly fluid along the bottom. Just a thought. Also... You can often find Eyelet lace edged cotton sheets at the store or at 2nd hand stores. I buy the Sheets, Bedskirts, and Pillowcases for clothing and costuming. I made my daughter's underpinnings for Victorian Caroling from them. I keep a decent 2nd hand stock on hand. They were all great skirts. Love the Tartan. In my area there is an annual Scottish Fair where anyone can buy or order their family plaid. If you’re not Scottish there are so many amazing designs available and all of the fabric is 100% top quality wool, dyed and woven in Scotland. To be honest, there’s not enough room in my sewing closet for all my favorites. The Claire skirt is amazing and I am glad you are tenacious by nature. The folding method for pleating is the best way to sew a fitted waist to hip design as well.

@@MariahPattie I feel like styling, cut and fabric make a big difference in the vibe of long skirts--I've been geting really into "tea length" for fuller skirts, which for me doesn't have any kind of a frumpy/dowdy feel and does balance out the overall look well. However a straighter skirt in a stiff fabric like denim or courduroy definitely does have that "fundamentalism vibe" as you put it if it goes much below the knee.

You really have a knack for explanatory sewing diagrams, really! They are just **Chef's kiss** especially the one for the pleats of the outlander skirt. Edit: I have only now gotten to the diagrams of the "pleats without math" part 😍

Glorious. And thank you for the easiest way to make/set pockets ever! The Outlander costumes are sooo droolworthy! I can’t stand the show though, sadly. My pleating “math” has also always been: half and half and half and half and.... haha

So many thoughts. First let me say that your skirts are lovely. (And Im not an earth tome fan) i LOVE the outlander skirt. And the reversible skirt is genius! I do my pleats much the same. Great video! Im sure this took a long time to make.

Oh this was so helpful! Thank you so much! I'm in the middle of a doing a 18th ish century inspired short skirt in a tartan and I have been agonising over the pleating for weeks now! Congratulations on nearly 20k! As a celebration idea, i would absolutely love to see more real world creations from your world building series. I absolutely love the history bounding and the historical makes but that world building design is unique to you and there is something quite thrilling about seeing it come to life 😁

Math nerd: this kept bugging me, but I can finally confirm this mathematically should work for all measurements. Law of similar triangles + integration method of finding the circumference of a circle from triangles.

Very smart. I will rewatch this when I'm ready to sew again. Hopefully, we can get enough people to order that tartan because it's stunning! I can't put in an order just yet but it's on my dream list. Good luck with the move! May your new home bring peace and happiness.

If you’re short on fabric and really need every last bit just piece on a strip to be the hem. Sew a strip roughly as wide as you’d like your hem to the bottom of the skirt. Fold up and press, then just fold over a bit at the top of the strip to hide the raw edge and sew down. It finishes the bottom of the skirt nicely, and uses every last bit of the fabric possible. I’m quite tall and this is something I’ve done a lot over the years.

You're reading my mind! In my sewing journal at this moment I have plans for a pocket skirt and a reversible skirt. So helpful!

that wool skirt looks fantastic, and you seem so happy in it! I'm making a similar one out of cotton,not the best fabric but it was gifted to me so I'll use it. I live in Brazil so it'll be more petticoat than skirt but we're entering summer now, no way to make it too thick

I liked all 4 skirts, but I have to admit. I like the brown silk best. It reminds me of chocolate.
