Out of all of the Instant dreadlocks tutorials that I have watched, this is the best one. All of your videos are amazing. They very easy to understand and follow. I have had three sets of dreads. I have done each set with a different method. So I have some experience spanning almost 20 years with dreads. And I love your videos. Anybody that is looking for easy videos on instant dreads, this is the guy you want to follow.
@@lebumcames3615 the first set I mistakenly cut off for a job. The second I had 10 years. I left an abusive marriage and started a new life. Hair carries energy and it was fine for a fresh start. After 6 years without them I was ready for my newest set I started in January. There are tons of videos to help you learn to maintain them if you don’t want the wild free form look. I prefer very little maintenance. And if you really want them to look neat and have the money there are tons of locticians.
I've been wanting to do partial dreadlocks starting with maybe 5 at minimum (all over not dreaded under layer like the typical way) and slowly increase the amount till I have a full head. what sections would you suggest I started with? I also have thin straight middle back length hair (knots like crazy) what method would you recommend I tried twist and rip a few year ago and hated it
This is absolutely horrifying to watch. My whole body cringes watching this woman tear another persons hair up. You’re not gonna get the results that you want from this. It’s absolutely a mistake. If you want dreadlocks use a crochet hook. Or freeform those are the only two methods that aren’t going to completely destroy your hair.
It's been refreshing watching videos about getting dreads because I combed mine out and I miss having them. One day I'll get them again and I did it all by myself with me, and Gunther's videos
This video helped so much!! I’ve been very intimidated on starting dreadlocks myself but you made this look like a simple yet patient therapeutic way to start my journey. Thank you ❤❤❤
I have straight hair and did some backcombing to start the knotting then used a crochet needle to shape them, then palm rolled them just to smooth them out.
This is my first time on your channel and I found it very informative. I've started many new locs with the backcomb method, but will definitely be trying the other two as well now that I've seen this video. Thank you for sharing.
I locked my straight hair on Jan 18th, using advice from an older video of yours. (crochet) Currently, they DO look like grinch fingers. 😂 I'm waiting until they mature over the next couple months before blunting the ends. However, I'd like to thank you for your advice, Gunther. Without your videos and guidance I'm not sure I would have done it all on my own.
I know this is old but you don't have to wait to blunt the ends just slide a crochet needle down the dread towards the tip and pull the ends up into the dreads , I had blunted tips the first day my dreads were done
Thank you SO much for this. My hair is literally baby fine and I've always had to start with braids and let it loc by neglect. I can't wait to try this!
Thankyou so much for this! My boyfriend has been wanting me to do his dreads forever but I haven’t done them in awhile so I was nervous! Thanks for the freshin up!
I might have come here for the dreadlock tutorial, but the breakfast tutorial was hands down the best part. Really great way to make sure you're starting your day with some fresh food!
Ty, always! You and your wife are cuties!! I have the crochet hooks, I’m going to try the 3rd method on my hair, then the 1st to see which one works best! Watching the back comb method, gave me a headache thinking how my mom used to back comb mine in the early 70’s!! 😁 I swear, my mom, Aunt’s & grandmas were the back combing queens!!
This was super helpful, thanks for doing this! My son has been thinking about dread locking his hair, so this video is perfect. Once it’s dread locked, how do you maintain/care for them and how do you dread lick the roots as they grow out over time?
I've been wanting dreads for years and have tried so many ways to make faux dreads that have just ended up being a pain in the butt so I'm thinking about just finally doing this.
I'm light skin/ but I look way more black. and I was born with very very very very straight hair. and this video made me want to grow out my hair. and this video helped me out so much. Thank you so much.
@@Charlos92 dont wash it as often. And try washing it with baking soda. Get a water bottle and put half baking soda, half water.. it cleans your hair without any chemicals and no weird smell
@@trippdout regardless of the validity of your comment (it's a good one and I might try it myself), I hope you don't actually believe this method is "chemical free"
Thanks so much, Gunther, for sharing your art!!! I wish for dreadlocks and plan to start them one by one on my own. I will let you how successful it went!!!
My bro great video. I have been struggling with what to do with my hair. Some days i want to cut it but it's been 4 years and I haven't even trimmed it. Sometimes i braid, sometimes i have it loose, and sometimes twist braids. I think I'm going to twist lock it then i can twist braid it. It's so much work having long wavy hair. Thanks!
Thank you! Definitely found the 1st method easiest as far as watch and learn! Also felt it looked cosmetically better! Will be trying this on my kiddos hair! Thank you again!❤
I love how beautiful they come out with a little love. Im so excited to try my own on myself! I have wanted them for YEARS but Im at the point in life where I have lived and learned a lot (a lot to go God willing) but Im like- why not?! Why hold off. It'll be fun, something I love, and it'll make me happy. So Im going to try it. Life is precious. Go with God my dude and keep teaching, you have no idea how much you're helping with something i and probably many others- thought was this possible.
It helps to use a lice comb, and doing one dread on my hair using back combing took the better part of an hour on 1" sections by 6" long and took 3 days not including the crocheting.
I had back combed dreadlocks for 3 years. I found that when doing maintenance, the thickness wasn't as easily consistent as with the original dreads so it took quite a bit of stratigic effort to make the width match the length of the lock but it was manageable for sure. If I wasn't patient the roots would turn out thinner. I did find that the back combed locks didn't seem to get frizzy over time, rather the frizz reduced for me along the lock but I would definitely have frizz at the root. It just meant I had to maintain them every 2-3 months to make sure they looked how I liked them since I wasn't a huge fan of frizzy roots. I maintained them with the crochet method only and that was easy enough to maintain. I have straight hair! Great video. Fine tooth comb is definitely worth the investment, metal if you can find one because the plastic ones break and aren't worth the investment if you are maintaining your own.
Great video. I think this time round I might try all three methods. When I done my first set over 20 years ago,it was only back coming I knew of and palm rolling,no crochet hooks. They are a total game changer, and I will definitely be using one.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these informative videos. My 9yr old son has been asking for dreads for a while now but he has thick straight blonde hair so I’ve never really been sure if they would work well. But since watching a few of your videos I feel like I could give it a go. My only question is what do I do with the new regrowth that comes through? Do I just twist and crotchet it too?
I have stick straight hair and 5 years ago I started my dreads using back combing and crochet and it literally took a full year for them to lock up and the shrinkage was unreal. 3 years later I started longing for my straight hair again but I refused to cut my dreads off. So I used a fork and about 3 bottles of conditioner and 22 hours later I had straight hair again! I was completely surprised that it was down to my butt! My dreads were only a little bit past my shoulders. Now, I’m back to wanting dreads again and I think I’m going to try this method as it seems to help them lock up way quicker.
So I’ve had my strait hair dreads for almost a year. And I’ve been thinking about restarting them to get better sections and have someone help with the back. But I am a little scared of the hair loss. Would it be fine to go ahead and comb them out and restart?
I love this! I'm going to see if it helps with the making of my faux locks. I can NEVER get them as tight as the ones they sell online. So excited! Thanks man! I'll let you know how it works!!
Today, I'm going to make dreadlocks for the very first time in my life. I hope it doesn't hurt because I've heard that it hurts in the process. But yeah. Thanks, man. I appreciate your video. Let's go.
My hair is about 5-7 inches long and ive been trying to use the twist n rip method and it hasn't really been working for me hopefully it will work once my hair gets a little bit longer
I’m white with 3A hair and I’m thinking about doing this. I don’t know for sure. I’m so happy that you’re welcoming and open-minded to people like me. Even if I don’t do it I still greatly appreciate people like you who don’t just mindlessly berate people on disagreements.
I luv ur channel I'm getting my thin undercut white mans hair crochet hooked on monday 4 the 1st time I'm so excited. Keep up the good work dude. Best channel on RU-vid...
Also i just wanna say how important your sections are! Just started my dreads for the 3rd time cuz i hated the sections the first 2 times..make sure you redo sections as many times as you need! You dont wanna have to brush the dreads out and restart...its not fun lol
Unlike the more organs parts. I'm not sure at what point in time neatness with dreads became the main focus. However it's a huge issue as to why so many people end up bald, with the obsession of retightening and look neat.
Thank you for teaching us!!! I made my first dread today! Woot woot!!! I like the first method the best. Could you do a video on crochet hooking. And slowing it down for a moment! Thank you again!!!!
Great videos Ive watched a few over the last few days I have a question... So the last couple years I've got my hair permed, but this time I'm thinking of leaving it grow out and then starting dreads with the methods shown probably the first one.. My hairs still quite short maybe about 7 inches.. do you think this is long enough?should I hold out for it to grow a bit more or would it be ok to start the process now? Cheers!
I really appreciate your videos! Currently I am doing locs on my son and this is my first time. I went to cosmetology school many moons ago but they did not mention dreads (which is all they were known by back then), let alone teach methods. If this goes well I may get back into the hair game to be a loc-tician. ;-) Thanks again for the inspiration.
for all the people watching, you could curl your hair first and then crotchet it, that’s what I did have hair that’s in the 2b’s and c’s I curled my hair in small sections to imitate curly hair and it represented a 3c hair type and then continued to crotchet hook, it’s faster and better than just trying to crotchet straight hair and it retains more length.
If you have backcombed dreads there are going to shrink by a lot I have 3C/4A hair and after a month and one retwist my dreads shrinked I did crochet needling and backcombing in my dreads they didn’t shrink tremendously cuz I have a combination of thick and skinny dreads so if you want all your dreads to be thick then I recommend the twist and rip method and follow it up with a crochet needle
omg thank you for the Acai bowl!! I'm slowly going vegetarian and I'm pretty sure that I have diabetes as well but I'm looking for natural foods and going more holistic. Loved your video on instant dreads, so I came here to see if there was something different with the straight hair process. Thanks again!
I have straight hair dreads and I found it most useful to pull at kinda of a slant so you're pulling it towards the root. Just think about taking the hook and sticking it into the dread (twist and rip or back comb dread) then try to get the crochet needle around some hair and pulling it to the other side, but at a slight slant and just pull it towards the root. But you gotta do that kinda fast and then you'll get used to just sitting somewhere and crocheting for hours while watching youtube or sum
Thank you so much! I’m going inpatient soon for an eating disorder and will be on bedrest for a while. Ive wanted dreads for a long time, and now that I’ll have so much downtime.. I have no excuse to not do it
I saw a Black person do this on youtube. I was hella confused as to why they would back comb with curly hair when they can just twist and use the crochet needle. But they did have some heat damage their ends was damanged part straight and curly. I've been using the crochet method since 07, I have similar curly hair to yours texture wise. I think my curl pattern is 3c. But some of my hair is just wavy and straight, mostly my sides and around the lower back of my hair. I didn't bother trying to crochet it in with the thicker parts of my hair. I think this will be my last set of locs, I want to keep these ones for life. I usually get bored of my hair after like a year tho. So idk 😂💀
Tru1ne twist and rip only works with certain type of hair Ik this cuz tried doing it once and all it does that it knots up your hair and I tried crocheting it but it still looked the same I have 3C type hair
Gunther: ”super mature” Also gunther: ” you can see loose hair” That loose hair means its not mature yet! Of course no hate or anything but i also want people to have the right information and thats just a misconception! Those are not mature yet, yes it give you a very nice start to the maturing process but still not mature yet..
@@insaynn2994 straight hair? Then crochet, i wouldnt recommend interlocking tho.. if u really want to then go ahead... if u want it to look more natural try towel rub
I have had my dreadlocks for 4 yrs they were always tight, I don't do maintenance because I cant crochet. Last 3 months I have so much hair , alot of long hair coming out of the dreads. Do you think its the new shampoo I started using>
