30-06 Barrel Threading by Hands

This is for the first time I threaded my barrel by myself. Usually I sent them to a gunsmith.
I'm happy with the result. I have learned some mistake I did and hopefully I will do much better next time. I don't have experience on this, so if I can do it, I'm sure you can do it, too. Keep in mind the video is on fast mode during the process, so you will see I turned the tool so fast.
My gun is Remington Remington 783, 30-06. Thread that I made is 5/8"-24. Common threading size for rifle. If you want to try your first time, you may want to do it on budget friendly rifle.

Lol....ok. from a former weapons mechanic with the 40th ARRS. Vietnam Era. If it works...ok whatever but it does save a handful of money. Thanks for the show.

I like the way some Asian do work, they have a way of getting it done no matter how many people are complaining saying you're doing it wrong. If it works it works, it's better to have your own homemade threaded barrel then taking it to a machinist and paying a extortion fee for simple threading. My only advice if you're going to do this regularly get yourself a cheap or used lathe machine otherwise I see nothing wrong.

I'm threading a barrel tomorrow. I've been watching a few different videos to learn a little as this will be my first time. Like he said at the end, after you get 3-4 threads remove the guide every video I watched can't stress this enough.

It was an interesting video I must say. Hardly precision. A gunsmith will charge $100 to $150 dollars for a professional job. I do believe that covers re-bluing. I actually have a Smithy but don't even trust myself to working on my rifles. I am thinking about having one of my rifles done professionally or just purchasing one that comes threaded. The last option is the best. I am happy that you are happy with your results. With a gunsmith you can expect a long wait on getting the rifle barre done if they are any good. You will have to wait in line, and they will have the gun until done.

Don’t listen to the take it to a machine shop crowd. I’ve watched a couple gunsmiths do it this way on smaller barrels that don’t need turned down much.

I'd like a list of those gunsmiths, so I can avoid them at all cost. (That cost including the price of an annular cutter, guide, die and die wrench.)

@@jjjeddy I'm not bashing anyone, but I do firmly believe, as a craftsman, that there is a right tool for every job as well as an understanding of using said tool and outcome. If I were to witness a "gunsmith" turning down the muzzle end of a barrel with a bastard file it is painfully obvious that he doesn't have the tools or the knowledge of what he is doing as a professional. Even a home gunsmith can afford an angular cutter, pilot, and bushing from 4d reamers. It wouldn't be my first choice but it would suffice for a rifle that I'm not looking to squeeze 1/2 moa out of. Not to mention dimensions that need to be considered before the work was done(How much material will be left for a shoulder?How much wall thickness will be left between the bore and minor diameter of threads?What is the pitch diameter going to be after using a die of unknown blueprint?etc etc.) Cutting threads isn't a black art but to single point cut threads on a manual lathe with the bore dialed into .0002" or under T.I.R. on the lands and knowing every detail of the threads dimensions and profile does tend to give confidence that a die and file just can't. Not much different. Accuracy and recoil felt the same. I just like the way it looked now

Nice home job dyi but that sir is a compensator not a muzzle break. A muzzle break helps recoil by the gases pulling it forwards after a shot. Your compensator might help a bit but that’s more for semi auto rifles recovering on sight picture faster after each shot. Less barrel movement basically.
