Other games worth mentioning (besides Dragon's Dogma and Grim Dawn): Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Vampyr, Greedfall, Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga, Jade Empire, Outward, Remnant: From the Ashes, Titan Quest and Hades.
The line between true RPGs and action/adventure games "with RPG elements" has been blurred by AAA studios and casual gamers. People need to realize that a game is not necessarily an RPG just because you "play the role of xy".
I really want more NON linear games like Dark Souls story / side quests are designed… like resident evil/evil within but a huge open world with tons of quests.. Atomic Heart is the closest I’ve seen so far
According to Mündfish (atomic heart devs) the story will be strictly linear, but will have a final choice leading to 2 endings. Also, Dark Souls is pretty linear in terms of story, although you can tackle the world in very open ways.
@@oblikua Well I guess I don’t know the words to describe it. I do remember now Mundfish saying the story was very linear which was both surprising & disappointing… I suppose dark souls main story is straightforward but the way the side quests all have consequences for each other or even eliminating quests unknowingly, mixed with total freedom to travel forward / backward to different areas at what seems like a random order… All that is such great design work and unfortunately rare to see. I hate restrictions when I’m trying to be immersed in the experience ya know?
@@SadTown99 Yeah, I think I know what you mean. The game reacts to your actions and choices. In terms of story, usually only RPGs do that. But in terms of gameplay there is a whole genre called Immersive Sim, which are usually my favorite games. Not many like Dark Souls, though.
Depends on what your criteria are. As a legally free experience it’s second to none imo. That alone counts for a lot depending who you ask. I’d definitely consider it in my personal best of all time. There’s nothing that blends influences quite like genshin and it’s exploration and world are easily some of the best video games have to offer while being a top tier action rpg in its own right. I’d absolutely consider it one of the best rpgs of all time.
Not really. FF12's combat was very divisive (and barely considerable as an action RPG), and FF15 didn't do as well (as the canceling of the DLC showed). The rest of the Final Fantasy games aren't action RPG's, leaving them off this list which is only for action RPGs.
@@shivamsiddharthasinghrajaw7671 Seriously? Everyone's got their own opinion. I love DS3 combats but I prefer DS1/DSR bosses. No need to start go calling people trash.
Awesome video. I know its cool to hate on DS2 but did a lot to improve the game series with the addition of power stancing, hexes, etc. No knock against Demon Souls, but imo DS2 deservers the spot over Demon Souls. Now if we could get a super well done remake for Dark Souls 1 and 2 like we got for Demon Souls then we would be in a great spot.
The movement/control is the only issue I have with Dark Souls 2. If it handled like DS3 it would easily blow it out of the water due to the increased difficulty and creativity.
Wait a second.....Greatest ARPG's of ALL TIME....Diablo 3 over Diablo 2? Not even honourable mentions of Sacred 2, Titan Quest, Grim Dawn etc....Damn, subjectivity is a b...
I would add things like Dragons dogma, Elder scrolls oblivion and Skyrim, Elden Ring, Ac Odyssey as an RPG not an AC game, Ori and the will of the wisp, Hollow Knight but yeah very good list. Also play forbidden west instead of zero Dawn it’s got much better combat mechanics
I just wish the Souls games and Bloodborne were a little less diffacult. I know people love them for how hard they are but not all of us have that kind of paience. Id love to be able to play those games and I have tried, many times,I just cant. I hope Elden Ring is a little less hard.
The fun partially lies in the challenge, all it takes is a little patience until the combat clicks, then it's a joy. The niche would be lost by making it easier.
The whole oppressive and bleak atmosphere of soulsborne would be lost if it wasn't difficult. It makes getting through the many horrors you face a lot more satisfying and fun, and it's this duality of emotions that make the games so special, and is the reason why they are even brought up when people talk about difficulty in video games.
Best thing to do of your struggling that much is just keep killing the easy enemies over and over and level up your vigor/hp, most people don’t put enough in health and go for damage to early, you do plenty of damage early in souls games
I don't get it why everyone is bashing Witcher 3's combat system. It's WAY deeper than most other combat systems out there so maybe most people do not use the talent system properly. I see it all the time. The put in points without much thinking. Stupid af.
If you think witcher 3 combat system is *"DEEPER"* than most other rpgs than you need to stay away from rpgs or action rpgs with combat system having actual depth, like kingdom come, Souls or dragons dogma Dont even think of playing Divinity original sin 2 on Tactician mode
Ehh not a fan of this list Should’ve delved deeper Should’ve been more diverse And included multiple games from the same series is kinda lame So many amazing games were left out You left out Skyrim Dragons Dogma Kingdom of Amalur And so much more Division 2?? Come on now smh
Love to see CrossCode in any video. One of the best games I’ve ever played, and one that deserves to be talked about by way more people than it is. I personally don’t see the Soulsborne series as action RPGs, as I feel the RPG elements are not a focal point of gameplay. (The fact that you can completely ignore the leveling system is an indication of that, in my eyes.) I would consider FromSoft’s games to be more of an evolution on the hack-n-slash genre (even metroidvanias, with the design of Dark Souls 1). Tales of Arise looked very interesting to me, however after I played Tales of Berseria a couple months ago, I feel that series is not for me unfortunately. The game was filled to the brim with so many unnecessary systems that pulled gameplay down and made it feel complicated for the sake of being complicated. I found myself spending what must’ve been at least of the time sitting in menus. And the combat didn’t impress enough to warrant putting up with it, either. On my wishlist from this video, I have Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, NeiR:Automata, and Monster Hunter World. However the next game I am currently planning to buy will be Dragon’s Dogma, because I have seen a ton of praise thrown at it for its combat, with many people saying it’s the best combat of any aRPG. I hope those claims turn out to hold some weight to them.
@@YeOldeMachine Whats even crazier and also stupid is that gamingbolt put the division 2 on this list/video.The division 2 is a multiplayer looter shooter, NOT an arpg!
I swear I don't understand why I keep bouncing off the Witcher 3. I've played it over and over trying to see the magic. I just can't get into it. 3rd person ARPG'S are absolutely my thing too. I dunno.
I have the same issue. I seee why everyone likes it and why it has the reputation it does. I just, can't get immersed. So I play it for a day or two. Put it down for a month or three. Eventually I'll get through it lol.
@@YeOldeMachine What doesn't click for you? I think it's probably in my top 20 favorite games of all time, not #1 by any means. But the way they handled side quests and character progression is just so damn genius. The fact that every side quest feels like a little story in and of itself, I love that. Not to mention great story and video game boobs...lol...what isn't there to love?
@@adventurous_soles9899 well, for me, the combat is not fun. To my eyes it graphically just doesn't look very good and has clunky animations. Also,, the progression was paced a bit weird. No doubt the stories on the side quests are some of the very best narrative side content out there, and I definitely think it's a great game. I guess it's just not for me. All the areas I find it weak, are the most important to me personally. I love a good story as much as anybody, but combat, exploration, and character progression are more important to me than anything
@@YeOldeMachine I actually completed the Witcher 3 but I will agree, something is just "off" about the combat. I can't quite put my finger on it but it was one of the least enjoyable aspects of the game for me.
Tales of Arise has way too many cutscenes and at least double the skits of any previous title. Many things were told to you three or four different times for no reason. Visually beautiful but a little hollow and extremely repetitive in dialogue.
These days Gamingbolt is phoning in their videos and really don’t care about the content. They care solely for the ad revenue, their “content” brings in. But HZD does check all of the boxes as far as RPG‘s go.
You can't make a list with 30 and mention dark souls 2 times right of the bat, i mean they are pratically the same, if it was FF and FF Tactics i could understand since there is a big difference. Diablo THREE ?????????? and then you go and pick TORCHLIGHT 2 the same creater as diablo 2222 and used it as base. Cmon TRY HARDER.
Horizon Zero Dawn wouldn't be on my list as the best of anything i found it incredibly boring. I also wouldn't say any game is the best of all time as no one knows what the future holds.
"Of all time" lists like this really get to me because I get its a matter of opinion but CROSSCODE? Def not top 30 action rpg's of all time lol. You can't tell me someone honestly thinks thats true. Atleast base it somewhat on popular opinion?
i am diehard div 2 but lemme tell ya the devs have no clue what to do with pvp. its horrible. the most unbalanced pvp ive ever played and my main thing is pvp.
Ok after being more than a minute in and seeing 2 dark souls games its clearly a bandwagon ride and one im going to give my ticket up on to ride... I'm good.. beat them all if your wondering too but extremely over rated they are dark gloomy games more hard to see than play... Resident Evil Village is WAY better... and there are better souls"like" games at this point so yeah again I'm good..👍
Top ten fromsoft games ft top downs you've never heard of, and a few anime games. Half of these arent even RPG's. Hate to just talk shit cause im not an angry dudie like that but damn this is a horrible list.
It's an action game (character action game if you want to be all 2021 terminology) not a action rpg. You don't get dante to lvl 30 cuz there is no leveling and have him do side missions from a town lol
I don't understand what parameters you're using for "action RPG". How are there no Legend of Zelda games on the list? Are you requiring leveling to qualify? OK, then where are any of the last three Assassin Creed games? Where is Skyrim? It's all real time action. Can be played in third person if that's a prerequisite of your list. Where the hell is Dragon's Dogma? Also Diablo 2 doesn't make the cut of "all-time best action RPGs"? Seriously? You found room to fit every Fromsoft Souls game except Dark Souls 2? Wow. Quite the bitch-slap there. Also, (almost) every Souls game but only one Borderlands? All while squeezing in a bunch of mediocre titles, not to mention a few like Crosscode, The Ascent and Scarlet Nexus that are maybe just a bit new to qualify for any all-time best list just yet, don't you think? Sorry, but poor list guys.
This guy wouldn't know the 30 best action RPGs of all time, if they come up and bit him! This guy is going downhill, hence 1.09M subscribers, but less than 500 views. This shows dissatisfaction. So this video is the final straw, so I am unsubscribing.
totally agreed , these guys just pick the most established and popular games and they slap um in a list for a video , im sure this fuckin guy haven't even played half of the titles , and in terms of departure im unsubbing too , its nice to leave a feedback for why u stop giving a shit about a channel :)
