Agreed. I would think NZ would have been the second most developed southern hemisphere nation after Australia. Instead we jumped to Chile.

I've heard this reference a few times primarily in American and British written books/columns. Being an Aussie myself can't help but laugh when I see or hear it.

The seasons aren't reversed. The coldest months in the southern hemisphere are called Winter and the hottest months are called Summer. This is the same as it is in the Northern Hemisphere. The seasons in the Northern and Southern hemispheres are opposite at any point in time. To your second point, the relative angle of the earth's axis to the sun and hence to the hemispheres at any point in time is the reason why the seasons are opposite.

@@FoxSullivan the standard of living in New Zealand is higher though. Because they have pretty much the same GDP, but new Zealand has a much lower population, meaning there significantly more money available per citizen. That translates into a higher GDP per capita

I just looked it up: Chile has a GDP of 255 Billion USD, whilst New Zealand has a GDP of 249.9 GDP. I'm Chilean and I'm honestly surprised.

@@rizkyadiyanto7922 Technically speaking, being the pedant that I am, the entire island is called New Guinea, the eastern side is the nation of Papua New Guinea, while the western side, which is a province of Indonesia is known as Irian Jaya. And while the island of New Guinea technically is part of the Australian continent (due to the shared continental shelf), because of the Torres Strait & Arafura Sea that separates the Australia from New Guinea, Australia is popularly thought of as being a continent on its own.

So, yes, excluding the metropolitan area, Sao Paulo is the most populated city in Southern Hemisphere

Well, some people can say the Southern Ocean doesn't exist, instead, they are the South Pacific, South Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.

I'm Australian, so the maps I see show the Australian boundaries for neighbouring seas ands oceans. But now, having checked, the Wikipedia article - which discusses Australia quite a bit - says there are various definitions. But it doesn't mention Southern Ocean denialism.

yup, but I guess when he can't even include the correct above ground structure of New Zealand, that probably shouldn't have been a surprise. That continent imo though is an obvious fact that should have been included & featured, the world's only primarily submerged continent is in the southern hemisphere & he didn't think that was worth a mention? Not even to include it in the list of continents found in the southern hemisphere?

That's only on GDP. The human development index, which is what he quoted, put New Zealand tied for 13th place which makes it second to Australia. Also South slope in NZ is at 46 degrees south, which is further south than Chile.
